Satoshi Kanazawa of the London School of Economics and Political Science published the results of a study which indicated that Liberals are smarter than Conservatives.

In general, I find that intelligent people, like myself, come off as arrogant.

And though I am conservative, I find that my highly intelligent peers are, in fact, generally liberal.  I've discovered that it's not that intelligent people are generally liberal, it's that arrogant people generally are.  They think that their superior intelligence, makes them more qualified to run the world, which is, their plan, after all. The "other people" (i.e. conservatives) are clearly too stupid to be allowed to run things. That is of course, arrogant.

Of course they aren't quite as smart as me, or they'd be conservative. I hate that that sounds, arrogant, but it's true tongue....

And my case: i.e. someone who is both intelligent and as arrogant, yet is conservative, is  simply the exception that proves the rule ... tongue

Seriously, though, it's a stupid survey and a stupid article... People will use it to support their own view point, and it changes nothing. Conservatives will disagree.  Liberals will say "See TOLD YOU, I was smarter" ...

So your just dismissing the scientific evidence that lead to the article? Because it doesn't support your position?

        That is arrogant.

I think abortion might skew these results. Liberal women are much more likely to have abortions if the child has some kind of genetic defect because they view it as a choice. Conservative women are much less likely to have abortions, even if the child has some kind of defect, because they view it as murder. Do you think this might affect the studies at all?

the 21st century is all about the building of balance within oneself, hence without, in the world...with greater balance there will be a  more correct vision of what intelligence is...it is not just IQ, it is not just emotional intelligence, and it certainly is not just political intelligence
(which I think is an oxymoron smile) there will never be peace in the world until unity of purpose is established, and we won't find it if we continue to have political sides...we've got to work together, period.

I think I agree that intelligent people are more open to new ideas and things in general, which is kinda what being liberal is about.
Conservative to me is more about old fashioned tried and true ideals, being non-receptive to new things and new ideals. Which makes me lean towards the idea that they are more closed minded and therefore think(imagine) less.

Meh, there are intelligent, and stupid, people in both groups.

Unfortunately in England the politicians seem to be more devious than smart, and more concerned with, for example, using the taxpayer money to build a moat with a floating duck house, than deal with the economic problems our country is facing.

I have to agree, as always, I believe that the 'middle ground' is usually the best.

A combination of little bit liberal free-thinker and a little bit proven experience is the best course, the extremes of either side are usually going to be flawed...

Look before you leap, but after you have looked...Leap!

You said it all right there, Arthur--I am sooo tired of hearing how one party is better than another, or how Liberals are better than Conservatives, or vice versa.  It's divisive, and totally destructive, in my opinion. Come on--how has it worked SO FAR?

I wish we could just toss out ALL the stereotypical titles, along with all of the current politicians, and start over...with people who really want what's best for this country, not what's best for THEM, or their individual supporters...

But I realize that that is wishful thinking on my part--too many egos out there to ever get it done.

Arthur, I actually agree with you that Rush is not a moron.  He is much worse than that.  He is a man who knows exactly what he is doing.  He makes money off of the dumbing down of conservatism and appealing to the lowest common denominator.  He caters to anger rather than thought and assumes his listeners are dumb enough to buy into it, which, unfortunately, they are.  Worthwhile conservative ideas have been drowned out by people like Limbaugh and those he spawned (Hannity, Beck) who sling slogans and soundbites instead of rational debate.

Limbaugh may be rich, and maybe he soothes his conscience by calling himself an "entertainer," but I don't know how he can sleep at night.

Not all rich people deserve our admiration.  Most of them don't.

Arthur Fontesposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I admire Rush I guess I am one of the lowest common denominators.

Listening to the Rush Limbaugh show 20 years ago changed my life.  He inspired me to be self responsible.  He showed me how it was my decisions that changed my life.  He taught me that I was not a victim and should not succumb to victim syndrome.

I still think to this day that these things were some of the most important lessons I have learned.

I already asked this but no one responded.

Rush gives speeches, Rush takes calls live on the air.  He does not use teleprompters.

If Rush is dumb what do you call a guy who cannot hold a coherent conversation without three teleprompters?

That is right I am saying if Rush is dumb Obama is Stupid!!!!

          1. profile image0
PrettyPantherposted 14 years agoin reply to this

See, this is what I'm talking about.  I don't believe that you actually think that Obama is stupid.  And, I'm pretty sure you know that he can hold a coherent conversation without a teleprompter, since he has done it many times in interviews and other settings, including two televised discussions on health care.  However, even though you, a smart guy, know this, you are using a silly argument that can be easily disproven to claim that Obama is stupid.  You're smarter than that, Arthur.

To me, this is an example of what I"m trying to say, about the dumbing down of discourse.

Plus, did you even notice that I said that Rush isn't dumb?  smile

PrettyPantherposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I would like to rephrase something.  It was wrong for me to say that his listeners are "dumb enough to buy into it."  That really isn't accurate.  I think it's more that they are being lazy.  It's a lot easier and less intellectually taxing to listen to Rush's black and white view of the world than to take the time to understand the nuances of policy choices across a broad spectrum of ideologies.

I don't consider myself either of these groups and tend not to be swayed by popular opinion or let he said she said arguments change my mind...both sides only pander to the groups and people that will bring them money and power....and that is all politics is really about..."power and money"...not doing the right thing or helping this country...so the finger pointing and name calling will never end until we, the american people put aside all the petty crap quit choosing sides and maybe even do away with the party system...When ever labels are put on anything it will usually turn to shit eventually. I saw an interview during the last election of people on the street...they were asked who they would vote for and quite a few said McCain..when asked why far to many had only this to say " My daddy was republican and his daddy was a republican so it's good enough for me"...Great basis to cast a vote.
The ones who said they would vote for Obama said becuase they hoped for some kind of change in the system...not my daddy this his daddy that. I don't care for a lot of whats going on right now but by bickering back and forth nothing will ever being to get better.

What's happening is far more than bickering.  What Obama is heading for pretty much looks like your banjo-playing best man up there.  Obama is heading our nation to liberal fascism and the reason he's there is because the majority of democrats voted for him and the majority of independents also voted form him.  Liberal are responsible for the trillions of dollars of debt that have to be paid back. Liberals are responsible for the constriction of opportunity in the future.

"But self-identification is often misleading; do kids really know what it means to be liberal? The GSS data are instructive here: Kanazawa found that more-intelligent GSS respondents (as measured by a quick but highly reliable synonym test) were less likely to agree that the government has a responsibility to reduce income and wealth differences. In other words, intelligent people might like to portray themselves as liberal."

There's something wrong with this study, obviously they should not be using the terms liberal and conservatives with these children, they should be asking questions that deal with their positions on government instead. Like "What are your views on the military? Taxes? Gay marriage?"

If the ongoing stereotype is that liberals are, as a whole, more intelligent; many who are on the fence will decide that liberal views are the more intelligent choice. Just like everything else, political parties can be quite a bandwagon movement.

In a completely sterile environment without any social quotas to conform to the results would be more balanced. I believe there are highly intelligent people on both sides of the spectrum.

Ideally, based on my morals, I am a libertarian socialist but the effectiveness of that sort of government is radical without a complete uprooting of everything, so I guess I'm a libertarian.

How does libertarian socialism work? That form of government seems like it would be incompatible with itself.

Haha, I'll post some wikipedia text on it since it's a lot to regurgitate tongue
Libertarian socialism is a philosophy with diverse interpretations, though some general commonalities can be found in its many incarnations. Its proponents generally advocate a worker-oriented system of distribution that radically departs from conventional capitalist economics (socialism).[15]  They propose that this economic system be executed in a manner that attempts to maximize the liberty of individuals  and minimize concentration of power or authority (libertarianism). Libertarian socialists are strongly critical of coercive institutions, which often leads them to reject the legitimacy of the state in favor of anarchism.[16]  Adherents propose achieving this through decentralization of political and economic power, usually involving the socialization of most large-scale property and enterprise. Libertarian socialism tends to deny the legitimacy of most forms of economically significant private property, viewing capitalist property relations as forms of domination that are antagonistic to individual freedom.[17]

You know what is funny is that the left leaning media always quotes the so called "stupid man".  They use Rush quotes to say on air the things they do not have the intestinal fortitude to say for themselves.

I also experienced Rush in high school in the same capacity as you.

You do not have to take Rush seriously he is an entertainer.  Considering that he does not need a teleprompter to handle any speaking situation.  What do you consider a man who is incapable of forming a coherent conversation without three teleprompters?  (Just in case one falls over.)  LOL

He's pretty much a shock-jock doing what he does for ratings. I don't support that kind of person no matter where they are on the political spectrum. If I disagree with someone but they present themselves reasonably, I'll at least give them respect. Rush is...one of the most annoying media figures I've ever been exposed to. But he's just that, in my opinion: A media figure.

Two of the smartest people I know--one young, one old--are conservatives. Most of the conservative people I know are dumb, but that may come from living in a rural area where people care more about ridin' 'round in pickups and binge drinking than schooling (the conservatives in school do, I've observed, do a LOT more binge drinking). It skews. I don't think either being smarter can be shown.

The valedictorian at my school is a liberal. The salutatorian is a conservative. I have top scores on tests, and I'm liberal. Can I judge just by the small sample size I associate with? No.

There's something called a confirmation bias--we look for evidence to support our own view. Would I like to think liberals are smarter? Yes. But if I had to stand beside my school's physics/engineering/maths teacher, I would be but a fly compared. If I had to stand next to my same-age-group friend, I'd look like a stuttering, bumbling idiot.

To definitively say one political persuasion or another is smarter to lean so far as to almost fall over.

As general groups, I really don't know. And as far as the definition of "smart" I really don't know either. hmm Most of my friends I guess are "liberals". And most of my friends are getting their masters or Ph.D in some sort of field of science or medicine. I would say they are very very smart.
