Introducing the Alexander Technique In Giving Birth Naturally

As I was researching about the different techniques of giving birth I came across this one Alexander technique in giving birth. I think it is a nice technique because it is also helpful even for those who are not pregnant and wanted to have a good posture in general. Like any other technique in giving birth the natural way, the Alexander technique in giving birth is more focus on the things that you do the natural way and being at ease with your self. In a nutshell it is a technique in which " people can learn to release muscular tension, increase breathing capacity and restore the body's original poise and proper posture". This technique is popular to those who are into sports, entertainment industry -- singers etc and for pregnant women.

The Alexander Technique:

F. M. Alexander (1869-1955), a stage performer is the one who developed this technique. According to resouces -- the Alexander technique is another form of alternative medicine and educational discipline which focused "on bodily coordination, including psychological principles of awareness. It is applied for purposes of recovering freedom of movement, in the mastery of performing arts, and for general self-improvement affecting poise, impulse control and attention".

According to the American Pregnancy Association, Alexander technique work in basic premises :

  • People can learn to release muscular tension, increase breathing capacity and restore the body's original poise and proper posture.
  • This technique was developed for sitting, standing and moving with safety, efficiency, and ease after solving his vocal trouble. Alexander technique is beneficial to any person including pregnant women
  • As your body changes, "lower back pain, balance, digestive problems, shortness of breath can be helped through simple modifications in your movement".
  • In terms of pregnancy, "when it is time to deliver you will be able to breathe, and calm your system, focus during the birth, help open the cervix during dilation and prepare for effective pushing as the baby comes".

In Alexander technique -- the coach, the parents can help in the birthing or delivery process by learning the lessons and the father can help assist the woman to facilitate her own way of giving birth by encouragement and support and loving assistance.

The Alexander technique can help prepare the woman during childbirth by :

  • learning how to be calm and breathe when in labor
  • maintain focus and concentrate on inner self during labor
  • facilitate the opening or dilation of the cervix
  • coordinate her body to push and know how to exert effort on her own for the baby to come out.

Classes are offered to : for demonstration, explanation, and repeated examination of what spontaneously occurs in the student.

  • Hands-on suggestions are offered in the context of everyday actions such as sitting, standing, walking, using the hands, and speaking.
  • Assistance with sports, hobbies, or the performing arts may be requested by students as further topics of personal interest.

There is always something to learn when I visit your Hubs. Up until now I thought there was only one way to have a baby. Thank God there are still plenty of "Storks" around.
