Why does being judgemental always sound negative?
It seems that whenever we say that a person is being judgemental it infers they are picking out the worst in something or someone - but is this necessary true?
The Collin's dictionary definition is 'of or denoting an attitude in which judgments about other people's conduct are made'. These assessments of someone else are often made with little factual knowledge of the person or their life, meaning that they are often inaccurate. This is why it is a negative term.
Being judgmental is always negative. I cannot think of any instance when being judgmental could be mistaken for positive influences.
Constructive criticism is the closest thing to positive judgmental-ism, but critiquing one's performance is still pushing the line if it is done in an insulting, or demeaning, manner.
Being a judge in a contest is picking out the best of the best, but it is still negative to those who lose; and still subjective in the minds of those doing that judging.
