Obama's drug usage was long ago during his college days, and he cleaned up his act and turned his life around. At least Obama has been open about demons in his past, whereas some conservative candidates like Reagan hid things to generate a squeeky clean image.
I used to write in votes for historical figures and fictional characters on school election ballots. I guess one teacher told my sister years later not to write in votes for fake people, so I wonder if anyone had my idea too .
Yeah, the whole patriotic/unpatriotic "do you hate America?" thing is about as ridiculous as it gets.
I won't even waste the finger-strokes to explain what patriotism really means. Some still know and I'm glad of it.
Obviously, somewhere along the line some folks got the idea that being patriotic simply means you have the biggest flag in your yard and that you can yell louder than those who question you.
Good point.
I think this thread has gone way off topic. The original question was Which one would win a debate, not which one would be a better leader.
I don't think anyone here would agree that Rush would be a better leader, he is after all an entertainer. I sit on the left side of center but I find some of his stuff entertaining, not that I agree with everything he spews out, but I often find myself debating him from my car as I'm driving and listening. He makes you think, he makes you question and he definately tries to make you choose.
Without him or others like him, we would only get one side of an opinion and it would be much easier to sway public opinion with only one side.
And others got the idea that it's tearing down, belittling, or spitting on the flag "and that you can yell louder than those who question you."
Most Americans love their country and the principles upon which it was founded. To nit-pick and accuse each other of 'hating America' simply distracts us from the fact that most politicians are scuzzy and they love keeping us drawn into two factions so that we'll never unite on anything long enough to see how badly they've ALL been cheating us.
Guys...Obama won the election. Constantly complaining and nitpicking about it does not change that fact. You just have to live with it until you can try and vote him out of office.
Yes you can criticize, but complaining about ancient history will not help.
Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.
And how does that quote fit in here?
Give Obama a little more time before you say he has failed...
I didn't say he's failed. I will say he's failing.
He is doing a better job than McCain would have, and honestly I am seeing a few improvements. Given the horrible economic situation our country is in I highly doubt a Republican candidate would have done any better.
Actually I do with most certainty. John McCain would have definitely have been the wrong choice for this country, and many did not vote for him for a reason. Honestly, I think it just irks you that not everyone is conservative as you are, but you are free to think as you wish. Stop trying to convert everyone to your way of thinking.
You are so right. It does irk me that not everyone is as conservative as I am. We conservatives need to do a better job of swaying people to political conservatism: smaller government, more personal freedom and greater opportunity for self-determination. Neither of the major parties supports any of these viewpoints any more.
As PJ O'Rourke said, Republicans are the party that claims government doesn't work, then they get elected and prove it.
You can probably start swaying people with genuine actions instead of the same old rhetoric. Bush's administration created the 2 largest beauracracies this country has ever seen, No Child Left Behind, and Homeland Security. How is that for smaller government. I don't even want to get into the Patriot Act and what it has done to personal freedoms.
Actions will always speak louder that words. This country has been moving left for the past 16 years so conservatism as you once knew it is no longer an option.
The US census estimates that our population will include 30 million more people by 2016, do you think they will be on the left or the right?
Was the question about voting? That's different.
I jumped ahead. I assumed that was the point of the question. I may have been wrong.
To answer the question more specifically; I don't know what 'right' means any more. At the national level we have nothing more than rhetoric from Republican leaders like John Boehner. He presided over Bush's spending and he cries me a river when he can't get his way. Leadership? lol. His district is one over from mine, so I get to hear his whining all the time. He needs to be fired.
I know what politically 'left' means; trampling the constitution, bigger government, more taxes, less personal freedom, unhappiness when someone else has more fun than you. I hope the new 30 million Americans realize what they are giving up when they vote away their liberty.
LMAO...Better than Berra...( When you come to a fork in the road, take it..}..Larry
I don't know how big the bureaucracies actually were, but other than that I agree with you. Bush spent like a drunken sailor as the Democratic Congress enabled him. Remember that the president only submits the budget; the Congress approves it and then spends it.
However, if you honestly think that the party who gave us the racist debacle that was the Great Society is actually going to curtail spending, I have a hub to sell you.
Where did you develop this occult power to see into alternative realities?
Come on...
There hasn't been enough time to say whether he is failing or not.
Really? Is participating in the democratic process limited to voting once every few years and then keeping your mouth shut until next time?
The gift of gab does not make one intelligent. I know some very erudite thinkers that pen their ideas well, but who are reticient to participate in lively discussions because they are more introverted. I stand by my statement that Obama is a very intelligent man because he has made great strides in his life to bring himself to where he is, and to me questioning anyone's intelligence is an act of arrogance, and slightly negative.
Everyone has a form of intelligence, and the need to question or claim someone is not is often looking down upon someone. Let us try to deviate from that.
Limbaugh would be a great GOP candidate for president in 2012 or a cool running mate with Palin.

Limbaugh has gone too far with his latest attack on Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy: ""Before it's all over, it'll be called the Ted Kennedy Memorial Health Care bill". THIS IS A PERSONAL ATTACK. Rush, it's OK to disagree with someone's ideas, but this statement makes it sound like...

Rush Limbaugh, Michael Ledeen and other partisan hacks hyperventilated about a supposed quote from Obama's thesis. A little research later determined it was fake, a post on a satire site, but not before Limbaugh went on the air, foaming at the mouth about Obama, "this little boy," had no...

I give Ron Paul credit, he was the only GOP candidate to condemn Rush's remarks. Santorum failed miserably by not coming out and condemning Rush. Romney and Newt, missed an opportunity to show he has a backbone and a defender of women's rights.I can't imagine any women voting for Romney, Santorum,...
