Cheney says he may have to have heart transplant

WASHINGTON (AP) Former Vice President Dick Cheney says he believes he'll have to make a decision on whether to have a heart transplant given his medical history.
Cheney tells NBC in an interview that he's getting by now on a battery-powered heart pump, which makes it "awkward to walk around." He also says he hasn't made a decision yet on a transplant, but adds that "the technology is getting better and better."
Cheney tells the network in an interview, "I'll have to make a decision at some point whether I want to go for a transplant."
On another matter, Cheney complimented President Barack Obama on his handling of the Tucson shooting rampage. Cheney says, "I'm not an Obama supporter by nature, but I thought it was one of his better efforts."
Cheney, 69, suffered a heart attack last year, his fifth since the age of 37. He had bypass surgery in 1988, as well as two subsequent angioplasties to clear narrowed coronary arteries.
In 2001, he had a special pacemaker implanted in his chest. In addition, doctors in 2008 restored a normal rhythm to his heart with an electric shock. That was the second time in less than a year that he had experienced and been treated for an atrial fibrillation, an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart.

it's a bout time he got a real one!
Definitely give him a real one :-) Maybe a conscience to go with it.
Well said Stacie
Well, he has access to the best government doctors (Walter Reed) and the best government-sponsored health care tax payers can buy. The irony of all of this would be lost on him - without a shadow of a doubt. While he is certainly the poster child for "hyprocrite" he is a human being. He should be glad he doesn't live in Arizona though...loll
You have to have a heart to need a transplant. . . .
And we had to look no further than the end of the OP for the partisan slam.....
Oh my, another lefty using VITRIOL.
Its no wonder you people are never taken seriously.
Given his age, why not just give him "end of life" counseling instead?
"At any given time, about 3000 patients are on the national patient waiting list for a heart transplant, but only about 2200 donor hearts become available". Don't suppose this guy will
have to be bothered with any waiting lists.
How's that?
Why waste an organ on this guy? A new heart needs to go to someone else. Why don't he and Bush redeem themselves by performing a televised ritual suicide?
Wait, I thought it was conservatives who were wishing death on their opponents....
Thanks for proving that notion wrong, Paul.....
I didn't know he had a heart. I've never liked him. In fact, I blame some of Bush's bad decisions on Cheney. That said, I hope the transplant is successful!
a heart transplant?
You mean his first heart - coal - wasn't good enough?
I love the welling of humanity in this thread. With loving, forgiving, empathetic people in the world who live life reflecting the values the above posts reveal, I am just bubbling with anticipation that our nation will come together in respect and compassion soon. The debate and cooperation needed to solve problems must be right around the corner given how close everyone is following the advice of their compassionate hearts.
Do artificial hearts produce artificial compassion?
It's true that it's just too easy to be cynical and secretly wish for the same bad things that others have perpetrated to be done to them also. It's tough not to react the same way to the same old things we have for eons.
In truth, perhaps we haven't evolved much in terms of enlightenment, but we have more expensive and impressive technology with which to obliterate each other.
... I heard he had an Anus transplant,,, the anus rejected him.
It's difficult to feel compassion for someone who is the antithesis of compassion. If Cheney were still around today there would be no consideration of "cooperation" in Congress.
Interesting that hubbers from all political persuasions feel the same way about Cheney.
Notwithstanding the jokes, I do hope his operation is successful. It's never too late to grow a conscience and repent.
The absence of a Social conscience in an individual is the worst form of mental illness. The proof lies in his history.
even George Bush was leery of him...
excerpt from his book, s in his new memoir, “Decision Points,” that Cheney first made the suggestion in 2003 and that he weighed replacing the vice president with former Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), then the Senate majority leader.

“He was seen as dark and heartless — the Darth Vader of the administration,” Bush writes of Cheney in an advance copy of the book obtained by The New York Times.
By dropping Cheney, Bush writes, he would have demonstrated “that I was in charge.”

George Bush was leery of his own shadow... Another very sick person.

I suppose simply wishing Dick Cheney the best during this time and leaving the partisan sniping out of it would be too much to ask, wouldn't it?
I was no fan of Bill Clinton, but when he had his heart issues, I was more than able to leave politics out of my prayers and well wishes for his speedy and healthy recovery.
Or does that make too much sense in this case?
Not to worry. He'll be up and shooting friends in the face before you know it. The dark side of the force is strong.
You'd think that by shooting a lawyer in the face would improve his job rating at the time.
LOL NOW THAT WAS FUNNY RIGHT THERE! I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE!
I bet you sent him flowers and a get well card. Ha!
No one every accused Bill Clinton of being heartless!
That is the irony of this Cheney situation. If Cheney were suffering from any other ailment (and please note I am NOT wishing ANY ailment on him), there would be a lot less discussion. Call it gallows humor if you will. It's still funny.
Let's face it. Dick Cheney (aka the Dark Vader of the Bush Administration) is known for being heartless. Cold. Ice running through his veins.
He also did a lot of damage to our country, not to mention Iraq.
There are many people -- and not just Democrats -- who believe he should have been tried for treason and belongs in prison.
Does he deserve our prayers and well wishes?
That's for each individual to decide.
"He also did a lot of damage to our country, not to mention Iraq."
Like what?
I have to agree. The issue is not about us being heartless about Cheney, but it is ironic that if he actually does get a heart transplant, he is symbolically being given a heart to feel, to overcome his heartlessness. Whether or not he makes that effective is entirely up to him, but I think karma has strangely handed him a second chance.
"No one every accused Bill Clinton of being heartless!"
No, but he was an accused rapist and confirmed perjurer and philanderer.....guess that makes everything okay.....
Bill Clinton was guilty of being too affectionate - a charge which has never been made of Cheney.
So being accused of rape is being "too affectionate". What to say but "wow"
When Shakespeare wrote that line he clearly was proposing death by chef knife or ignited gasoline, not firearms .
Iraq - unprovoked invasion and destruction.
USA-- invasion of citizens' (guaranteed right to) privacy through Patriot Act.
To name just two...
Iraq-Removal of a tyrant and installed democratic government.
USA-Patriot act voted on by Congress, still in use today by your leader.
Obamablessyou
Iraq - $1 trillion and some change for removal of a dictator, war, and occupation of a foreign nation for going on a decade. How about North Korea while we're at it? Oh, no oil.. my bad.
$1 trillion - universal healthcare - WELCOME TO THE WESTERN WORLD USA! Oh, bad for the insurance companies.. my bad.
The US killed tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians for you to make a killing.
Well that's ok because see it's easy to pick on someone without a lot of clout in the world or nuclear weapons. Kind of makes you think why all the "wrong nations" are so anxious to get 'em, doesn't it?
Tens of thousands? What an imagination....you should write fiction....no, wait, you just did....
The figure I've seen is 100,000 Iraqi deaths as a result of our unnecessary, foolish, costly invasion.
Actually, Ralph, I am quite sure that is the figure you have seen....no doubt in my mind....
I heard that Halliburton had a surplus of canvas for waterboarding hoods. So they're making totes and selling them in Barney's in NYC. (From 30 Rock- Alec Baldwin to Tina Fey.)
Cheney doesn't deserve a heart after the huge war he started!
think about all the hearts he wasted!!
By your logic, Bill Clinton needs to fork over his man parts......

He voted against healthcare reform, helped Bush destroy this country and he gets a new heart. Now someone has to wait longer for a heart transplant because of this assh**e. Feel free to comment or make a list of a person(s) who needs a new heart more than Dick.
