Yes I have met several friends online, we became close friends online and after getting close we invited one another to visit and have been great friends since, both online and the real world.  Online relationships are the norm now a days as we communicate more online than any other means.  It's normal.  Love and Peace smile

I have never fostered friendships via social networking sites (because I hate them) and don't view HubPages as an appropriate venue for such things, since it is a writing site and not an AOL chat room.

However, I used to be very heavily involved in online MMORPGs (massively multi-player online role-playing games) and met in "real life" quite a few people that I had befriended in the game realm.

I have "online-turned-real" friends in Quantico (Virginia), Napa (California), Los Angeles (California), St. Louis (Missouri), Portland (Oregon), and Winnepeg (Manitoba, Canada).  I have met them all in person.

Two of my online pals (a male and a female) met through a game we played online and eventually got married and have been together for almost ten years.

The only real problem, as I see it, with meeting someone online before meeting them in person is that you have no idea if that person is being genuine with anything they tell you about themselves.  An online venue is the perfect place for someone to completely recreate their identity and become the person they've always wanted to be, or become the darker side of themselves that they cannot show to society.

I did once, from another site.

A woman in Texas........we expressed many of the same views and similar experiences.  She lived in a neighboring Texas town to my daughter.  When I went to visit my daughter, she and I met for lunch.

It was a nice meeting, and I am glad that I did it.......as time and duty requires, we were pulled in different directions........we  did not become 'good or personal friends', yet remain supportive of one another on another forum.

It is good, to see her face, when I visit her there.

I have made a lot of friends via the internet, especially the last two years on Twitter. I also met my boyfriend many years ago online via a writing site we were both on.

I have met my best friend ever on the internet, we live thousands of miles away from each other, different cultures, different languages and yet we like the same things, think on similar lines, support each other, help each other and feel so close to each other. .. miss each other if for some reason we do go online...

Sometimes I wonder what I will do without this friend.... I hope some day we shall meet in the real world too.

Even my family now thinks of this person as a friend.  smile
