Christmas day makes me sick.  One day of the year and it ruins an entire month.  I hate December, it is vile.

why do you hate it so much?  I find it difficult as well, but mostly because of toomuch hype to make it magical and too much money spent on too many gifts.  its more stressful than magical if you ask me.  but i still enjoy the ambiance of christmas.

I agree with you on this one. That's why I dread it every year. Too much pressure to go out & buy this or that just for the sake of buying. I'd rather write a poem or make something for somebody....

Too much candy and egg nog will make anyone sick. Too much stress and blinkey lights can give anyone a headache.

But none of that is what Christmas means anyway, so I'm fine with Christmas. And December's great for skiing on fresh powder.

I'm with you, UW. I've had a few Christmases that were extremely depressing, but that's to be expected. Life happens. But overall, taken in the mindset intended, it can be a great time of year, even without the hype and commercialism--or even religion.

Spreading goodwill, kindness and showering people with even the smallest gifts, whether tangible or intangible is not such a bad thing.

I love Christmas, too. Just think of Christmas as the birthday anniversary of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, who makes all our days great even if there are ups and downs to it. Christmas is our one day chance to serve Him by doing good to others.

In the sermon our parish priest gave this 1st day of our "Misa de Gallo" this morning, he particularly mentioned that Bangladeshis regard Christmas their time to give gifts to the deserving and even to say "thank you".(That is, they thank the Lord for this chance to love others).

Now I will love Christmas even more for this new-found knowledge.

I am Christian so I focus on church and the Bible.
My sister is a Pagan, (we are a mixed family!) and she focuses on the winter solstice.
We don't focus on buying things.
Turn off the TV and you won't be bothered by the ads.
Smile at someone and it will brighten your day.

Wow, I thought I was the Grinch.  Here's my take on christmas....this holiday has gotten to be about overindulging children into believing that it's a huge day for them to get whatever they want without showing any respect, grace, or tact.  Come on....I don't have children, will never have children except for my fiance's two from a previous relationship....and it seems this day has turned into a marathon of shopping and indulging and indulging and shopping for them.  It sickens me....but then again, I'm having a bad fkn day.  There I said it....it's a children's holiday....I don't have children, therefore the meaning of it is lost on me.  It meant something when I was around my family now I'm giving myself up for everyone else.  Kim, can I come to your home.  I think we'd have fun drinking nog and doggin' on people.

Because I have young grandchildren, Christmas Eve is my favorite day of the year. We read the Bible story from Luke, open gifts, laugh, eat together, and go out and search the skies for Rudoph's red nose. Everyone is always happy and in a festive mood.

There's not a lot of thinking about it involved.  There are people who have had normal lives that have had a "normal" amount of the usual kind of troubles (even the big ones and the "normal" kind of loss and grief); but then there are people who have lives that are so full of unrelenting crap and and who may live under so much oppression for so long it pretty much beats the Christmas out of them.

bojangles, I don't think it's an "artificial sense of giving and compassion" for most people.  I just think it's the faking being happy thing that irks a lot of people.

Even though the historical Jesus was born no where near December, and most of the stuff we do has really little to do with him , tree, log etc. I really enjoy the holiday. I love having the tree with colored lights, and Christmas music. It really does seem people are friendlier.
Money is tight, I fell at work with one of my kids and am out of work because of an injured Knee, but it's not about gifts, more about gratitude and family for me.
