What does Donald Trump mean when he says "has a great relationship with God?"  Is he sin-free?

How does one have a "great" relationship with God?  Does that mean he never sins?

No, I think he just means that he has a great relationship with God.  He probably feels favored to be as rich as he is and maybe looks on it as some kind of special dispensation...or a great relationship, as he apparently has said. He's been fortunate in his enterprises and rises when he falls. I don't pay much attention to what he says or doesn't say, but I do think he is an extremely egocentric and self-confident man, which he would have to be, I suppose, to stay on top as he does and make no apologies for it.

The word, "sin", comes from the Greek word, "hamartia", which means to miss the mark,  make an error or to have a fatal flaw.  While it is associated with the guilt of error, there is a measure of loss in meaning with translation from the original context of the word.  I don't know if Trump actually feels he is without flaw or if he simply won't admit to it on the world stage.  Remember, too, Donald Trump says a lot of things, half of them just spur of the moment blurbs to get a rise out of people.

Christianity looks on the word, sin, as a condition, whereas the Greeks might look on humartia, as a human frailty.  It was used a lot in Greek mythology in terms of the heroic journey.  The Achilles heel, so to speak.

Come to think of it, Trump's opponents are desperately trying to find his Achilles heel.  Maybe he is on the metaphorical hero's journey after all.

He means he thinks his ego is god. So many wealthy people claim it's due to god while they are very busy with agendas of deception.
If very wealthy people give away their wealth or large slabs of it  like some do then we can say they have a good relationship with God.

Donald Trump would have to explain what He means and the god he is talking about as well. Is He sin-free, well I've heard his rationalization about many things when the mirror is held up to his face so no he is not sin free. Right now he is more worried about how he can make himself look good with man's reasoning vs clean up his act with God. There is nothing in Mr. Trumps background that would indicate he is a disciple of Jesus Christ. Now that votes matter people become all kinds of things only to move on after the votes are cast to be who and what they really are.

I lived in a Trump building (owned by his father). The service was excellent, the buildings were always kept clean. A building super was fired for not intervening when a resident was harassed, and replaced with a reputable building super.

    Diane,
I certainly hope that does not mean that. We are all children of God. And most people are really good people. But we all fall short from time to time. When I am not being loving I distance myself from my wife a bit. That does not mean we have a bad relationship - we are just normal. When I sin I distance myself from God and love a bit. That does not mean I do not have a good relationship with God. Actually if I get back on track it only strengthens our relationship because I have a great God. Because the relationship is with God it is a great relationship not just a good one.
Sinfulness does not sever a great relationship or it would not be a great relationship.

I hope my sinfulness is examined in all it's failings by man. It already is by God. I hope there is judgment by man on me. For it has already been done by God. Judge Donald and his relationship with God and you judge your own. Not where I want to go.

Yes, Eric!  God wants us to stay in fellowship by confessing our sins on a regular basis.  1 John 1:9  Verse 10 says that if a person says he has no sin he lies.  We sin through actions, thoughts, and words.  We are not bad but we do bad things

I am glad this question was asked. It appears ok to judge a man and his relationship with God. Just because he runs for office we can demonize him? I do not care about right or wrong because I am not a judge of God and who he chooses.

Eric, when you target a group for votes, the people want to know if you are legit.  That's why we have Republicans v.s. Democrats, etc.  If I want to vote for a Christian, I want to know for sure that is what I'm getting.

Diane, be true. You already showed your bent. Politics or being Christian? Your question was slanted. You know full well the answer. Sin cannot change a relationship with God. It is a choice to distance ourselves. Be true.

Eric, TRUE!  We sin and distance ourselves.  We admit that we are wrong, apologize and reconcile.  There's humility.  This is where Scripture quotes help.  Recite the Lord's prayer and come to "forgive us of our debts (sins) as we forgive those ...

A great relationship simply means a mutual understanding.
Several years ago I worked for a company where our resident "bible thumper" approached me and asked:
"How is your relationship with Jesus?"
I told him we get along great!
From my point of view whether one wants to shout from the mountaintops the glory of their religious beliefs or keep it to them self it doesn't matter. It was none of this guy's business.
    Matthew 6:6
"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is {in secret}; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."
I don't think it's necessary to walk around with a tattoo of a cross on one's forehead or lead every conversational topic off with religion.
There should be no competition to prove who is more or less Christian. Sometimes the most vocal people are the least spiritual.
Just as a parent/child relationship is different among siblings I would imagine a person's relationship with God would vary from one person to another.
As for sin, no one is "sin free". A great relationship doesn't imply perfection. Every relationship has it's peaks and valleys.
    Ecclesiastes 7:20
"For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not."
    One man's opinion!smile

He may think he had a good relationship with God, but he needs to repent and ask for forgiveness, which he says he hasn't done.

Unfortunately, Donald Trump panders to his audience and tells them what they want to hear. He is no more religious than a rock would be. When asked in one interview to name his favorite Bible verse, he couldn't even think of one.

He keeps saying everyone likes him, even the Hispanics who he called rapists. He imagines he is best buddies with Putin after they spent 20 minutes in the green room together for a television interview. Apparently he imagines himself on great terms with God as well.

    The man is delusional.

He does well because he addresses the frustrations of many at a subconscious level with code words and dog whistles. He deceives them with the idea that he speaks for them, while he and others like him are the  actual cause of their  woes.

I do not think Donald Trump thinks he sin-free.  He has been married a number of times so he is far from it.

I think He is referring to the times He could have gone under, but something is keeping him above water, and thus he attributes his success in business to the grace of God.

He is a presidential candidate, so we will see what he means by having a "great" relationship with God.
