What is the number one inspiration for choosing a travel destination?

Aside from visiting family, what intrigues you about a certain part of the globe? Which causes you to reach for your wallet to buy that plane ticket?

We live in a big city, so we will use our vacation club to find resorts in locations far different from what we see. We like forest or beach areas the most. We will occasionally find popular tourist areas, but our main inspiration is to get away from what we see most every day.

Either something I read somewhere that peaked my interest or a good recommendation from a trusted friend or family member.

This is my top hub, which happens to be a world travel piece that has received over 12,000 views thus far. These are some of my favorite destinations that I have chosen over the years.

In the US, it's to engage in my favorite sport, which is snowboarding.  Or I may hear some interesting things about a particular area, and wish to visit there.
If it's foreign travel, what attracts me is if I like the culture and want to experience it.  I toured Europe in 1982 because I was intrigued by Switzerland and Sweden; in touring the continent, I fell in love with numerous other countries as well.  If I were to go to Asia, I would love to visit Nepal, Tibet, and Northern India.

For me, now, it would be amazing natural wonders. I'm particularly thinking of volcanoes in Hawaii and Iceland. After that, cultural wonders, as well, especially ancient and indigenous.

For personal reasons, I'm probably years away from these trips. But the visions keep me going!

Hi, SidKemp ~ I live in Hawaii, where the eternal volcano erupts.  Hopefully, you'll make it out here someday!  I noticed you live in Florida; perhaps you can visit the West, where there are numerous hot springs, many of which are free!

    ThompsonPen,

I love to go any place hot during Michigan winters. It just makes the cold season go faster.

For me the number one inspiration would have to be the nearby attractions, and then also the culture, food and weather would have a big influence on where I decide to take a vacation. How about you?

My top inspiration for choosing a travel destination is enjoying all that an ocean offers.  If fills all my senses,  the sight of the ocean and its sunrise and sunset, the sounds of the ocean, the smells of the ocean, feeling the breezes, the sand and the sun.  It brings back memories and collects new ones.   Need I say more.....

Interest of my family are diversified. My wife loves shopping, I love nature and outdoor adventures (hiking, canoeing, kayaking, dog sledding, etc.), our daughter loves shopping and outdoor adventures, and son loves just about everything. We always chose a destination that offers opportunities to enjoy nature, outdoor adventures, and shopping.

Anywhere that is less congested than big cities. Somewhere warm and relaxing is usually where we like to go as a family, eg Fiji.

Most of the time  I go with my family. When we are going as a family we always choose a place where everyone can enjoy. Then we will do a google search and find out whether it meets with all our needs.

Sometimes we see a travelogue on the box that stimulates the old 'travel bug'. Another time we might see a write-up in a magazine/newspaper about somewhere we thought might be more expensive to visit/stay than evident from reading the article.
Again we might have hankered after seeing somewhere on the other side of the world, like Fiji or Easter Island and a TV advert tells us it's not as expensive by ABC Airlines as CDE Airways, who usually operates the route.
I've fancied travelling to Jutland in Denmark, to see places I've written or read about. My wife thought she'd go to Iceland to see the Northern Lights in January/February (but both years she tried cloud came over - still she saw places I'd read of in Snorri Sturlusson's Sagas). I fancy Iceland as well.

I would LOVE to visit Iceland!  Hot springs and geysers, snowboarding, midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter - what's not to love?!

What's not to love is the prices. Without a 'well-upholstered' wallet, you'd be sitting looking on rather than doing. Alcohol in bars is something like twice the price in the UK/US (everything but the fish and whalemeat or lamb has to be imported)
