What Movies Should Be In Every Collection?

   I'm not much of a movie person, but I do appreciate the art form.
   
   I was wondering which movies should be in every collection so that I may start to become more well rounded.
   
   
   Just listing the movie is fine, but if you gave a reason as well, I'll give more clout to that.

      well that's kind of a tough question to answer, as not everyone is going to like to watch the same movie.  like I have met a few people that thought "Lord of the Rings trilogy" sucked but they loved "transformers:  revenge of the fallen" or vice versa.  therefore, it's really up to your own personal tastes though.  like if you were into anime movies, then I'd recommend films like "Ghost In the Shell" or "Akira" for instance. 
      
      Or if you were into crime based films, then I'd recommend "the Godfather trilogy", "Good Fellas", "Gangs of New York" and many others. 
      
      therefore, it's kind of hard to say with very little to go on.  first tell me, what kind of movies do you usually enjoy when you do watch them?  What do you usually look for in a movie?  you like stuff that scares you?  makes you cry?  laugh?  or what?  please tell me, as it'll help me get a general idea of what kind of films you might like and should add to your collection.

         I couldn't agree more with Stevennix here. It depends entirely on the person. I happen to love world cinema so most of the movies I love alot of people wouldn't even bother with 'cos they've got subtitles. I just feel it important to get a grander image of the world we live in rather than just of western society and in particular Hollywood.
         
         If your willing to watch subtitled movies then I'd start with Amelie and then take it from there if I was you
         
         Plus, I'd say I watch at least a movie a day so if you refine your search let me know and I'm sure I can think of something to suit your viewing needs!

      THE GODFATHER, I,II and III (Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro)
      The first 2 won Best Oscar and the 3rd was nominated and rounded out the story
      
      REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (James Dean, Natalie Wood)
      It's the classic teenage angst story and it was one of only 3 movies Dean was in
      
      ROCKY (Sylvester Stallone)
      It surprised everyone by winning Best Picture over TAXI DRIVER
      The quintessential underdog movie.  Great theme too
      
      TAXI DRIVER  (Robert DeNiro, Jodie Foster)
      Martin Scorsese's masterpiece and arguably DeNiro's best work.
      
      TRUE GRIT  (John Wayne, Glen Campbell)
      Forget the remake. This is the one to watch.  Wayne got his only Oscar for this
      
      SCHINDLER'S LIST (Liamm Neeson, Ben Kingsley)
      Everyone should sit through this once if only to remind ourselves of exactly what humans are capable of.  If we don't examine history we are doomed to repeat it !
      
      KRAMER VERSUS KRAMER (Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep)
      They both won Oscars for this drama of a custody war.  You have to have Streep somewhere in your list
      
      TIGERLAND  (Colin Farrell)
      An Anti-Vietnam movie where they never actually reach Nam and the ending of the main character is left for you to interpret
      
      GLADIATOR (Russell Crowe)
      An amazing movie.  Crowe was perfect, but the Oscars snubbed Jaoquim Phoenix who was fantastic as the bad Caeser
      
      SEVEN (Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt)
      Introduced us to John Doe as a psychopath unequalled
      
      AVATAR (Sam Worthington)
      What can I say about this that you havn't already heard!
      
      DEATH AT A FUNERAL (The U.K. movie)
      This was just one of the best laugh out loud movies I've ever been to.  The audience was clapping at the end of it.  They tried to americanise it but it wasn't the same
      
      SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster)
      Another unique psychopath playing mindgames with a rookie FBI
      agent.  Foster and Hopkins both won oscars and we got a lot of great one-liners from it.

            Well, I think we missed a lot in that movie,” Affleck told MTV News during the recent Sundance Film Festival, “before they really kind of figured out how to do [superhero movies] right.”   
            
            Ben was disappointed.  They want to remake the movie.
            
            Spiderman rules. All the rest are awesome. I just could not get through Daredevil.
            
            Oh I should add the Godfather Trilogy is a movie library must.

    With digging to American history for a few things I needed to learn about citizenship(personal stuff), then researching the history of currency, which includes drug running, mobs, casinos, printing of money, and other things, it just turned me off to it. Like Prohibition- and what the "black market" was like long time ago, who it was controlled by- mob boss and the like.
    
    It really never interested me.

       If you look at it from an artistic perspective you will find some of the best acting in the history of movies.
       
       Since I grew up in a city with an abundance of mob activity I took an interest in organized crime.  I actually read the book before I was old enough to see the movie. When I did see the movie I had nightmares about one of the scenes.

    Alfred Hitchcock was a cinematic genius; if you want to experience dry wit and excellent direction, try any of his films.
    
    The Silence of the Lambs is perhaps one of the most compelling movies ever made - the chemistry between Anthony Hopkins and Jodi Foster is sizzling; it's a shame she didn't return for the sequel, Hannibal, although that other lady did a good job too
    
    What Dreams May Come is a visually stunning love story on multiple levels that calls to mind Dante's Divine Comedy (I love just about anything with Robin Williams in it)
    
    Anything with Kevin Spacey - he's a consummate actor and he always tackles heart-felt roles.
    
    Tim Burton's films are always immediately identifiable - he creates a new, dark universe and leaves you wanting more.
    
    The Toy (with Richard Pryor) is one of my favorite comedies, if it doesn't make you crack up, you've got no sense of humor.
    
    I could go on and on, but those are just a few off the top of my head.
    
    
    
    ETA: Oh yeah....The Stand (which is actually a tv series, although it's been released on DVD) and Misery....Do I REALLY even need to explain those? lol

    Godfather I and II: (Godfather III optional)  Riveting movie that isn't just blood and gore.  Amazing performances by Al Pacino, Marlon Brando and James Caan.   
    
    High Plains Drifter:  The definitive Clint Eastwood mystery man cowboy movie
    
    Animal House:  Good comedy with John Belushi
    
    Matrix:  The first movie raised some interesting questions about the nature of reality
    
    2001:  A Space Odyssey:  Science fiction without phasers or Death Stars
    
    Hoosiers:  Nearly the only movie about sports worth watching
    
    Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid:  Classic cowboy flick that appeals on a lot of different levels--it is funny and suspenseful and touching
    
    Karate Kid: (only the first movie--forget any sequel...) A touching, feel good movie
    
    Silence of the Lambs:  Creepy movie with outstanding performances by Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins
    
    The Hustler:  Paul Newman as Fast Eddie Felson and Jackie Gleason in a superb portrayal of Minnesota Fats
    
    Islands in the Stream: (most people find this movie dull... I loved it.)  George C. Scott portrays an Ernest Hemingway type character with great sensitivity
    
    Superman: (with Chris Reeves)  This movie proved that comics could be adapted to the big screen
    
    Rocky Horror Picture Show: It's hard to explain, but everyone should see this movie
    
    Pulp Fiction:  Must be seen several times to appreciate it.

    There are some good movie picks here and some are telling one's age-(smile) still I want to plug a move that I keep hearing isn't very good and whenever I hear that I keeping what movie were they watch??
    
    The Quick & The Dead with Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman.
    I've seen a lot of westerns in my life and I'm not a western person but the drama in this movie is strong and compelling.  The actor and actress are first rate.  I can't help but be drawed into this movie everytime I view it and that for me is something that rarely happens.  Even though I know the out come of the movie I'm still on the edge of my seat.
    
    The Quick & The Dead is and has always been first rate with me.

    1. birth of a nation (although it's highly controversial and i don't agree with it's subject matter and story content.  it's interesting to see how far humanity has come from those days, and to see all the new camera techniques that were invented in that film.  i know you probably won't like it but if your a movie geek like me that loves learning about it's history, then you'll love it. By the way, im half asian, one quarter hispanic and one quarter native american, so NOBODY here can say im a racist for recommending that film.)

    The original post seems to want a list of films that are artistic and are the pride of film making history.
    
    Any film with the genre tag romcom is to be avoided in this case, as are most 'box office' hits. While these can be entertaining, they are garbage nonetheless.
    
    I really do recommend the internet movie database website as a resource to selecting appropriate films because the ratings there are normally about right.
    
    If I was told I could only ever watch three films for the rest of my life I would choose:
    
    1) A Clockwork Orange
    2) Twelve Angry Men

    There are so many great movies. There are also 100s if not 1000s of lists of movies out there. Many of the ones mentioned are good calls.
    
    This year so far, I've seen quite a few that I believe to be standouts in their genre. 
    
    Double Indemnity is a true hollywood classic
    Gilda is also a classic film

    2. heck any bruce lee film for that matter

    4. Meng long guo jiang (retitled in the usa as revenge of the dragon and/or return of the dragon.  i highly recommend it as it shows both bruce lee AND chuck norris fighting each other)

    I suggest the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, aside from the usual wizard thing it has a lot of good things about it. The movie symbolizes with what is happening in our world today. The different races found in the LOTR such as the hobbits, wizards, elves, dwarves, and men symbolizes the different races and religion today. Like those in the LOTR everyone is fighting to get the ring (w/c symbolizes power, fame, wealth) in order to get hold of it and use it either for good or evil. So far that's all i can suggest. i hope i made sense

    I must admit, I am excited for the new Karate Kid to come out as well.... As the first one was awesome, I'm looking to see Will Smith's son act in this one.
    
    The Pursuit of Happyness was really, really good. He did a phenomenal job..
