As I was researching about the different techniques of giving birth I came across this one Alexander technique in giving birth. I think it is a nice technique because it is also helpful even for those who are not pregnant and wanted to have a good posture in general. Like any other technique in giving birth the natural way, the Alexander technique in giving birth is more focus on the things that you do the natural way and being at ease with your self. In a nutshell it is a technique in which " people can learn to release muscular tension, increase breathing capacity and restore the body's original poise and proper posture". This technique is popular to those who are into sports, entertainment industry -- singers etc and for pregnant women.

The Alexander Technique:

F. M. Alexander (1869-1955), a stage performer is the one who developed this technique. In Alexander technique -- the coach, the parents can help in the birthing or delivery process by learning the lessons and the father can help assist the woman to facilitate her own way of giving birth by encouragement and support and loving assistance.

The Alexander technique can help prepare the woman during childbirth by :

  • learning how to be calm and breathe when in labor
  • maintain focus and concentrate on inner self during labor
  • facilitate the opening or dilation of the cervix
  • coordinate her body to push and know how to exert effort on her own for the baby to come out.

  • Hands-on suggestions are offered in the context of everyday actions such as sitting, standing, walking, using the hands, and speaking.
  • Assistance with sports, hobbies, or the performing arts may be requested by students as further topics of personal interest.
  • Light hand contact is also used to detect the student's unnecessary physical and mental stresses.

  • The Alexander technique in giving birth naturally sounds good and it is also beneficial to those who are not pregnant.
