   I've heard that the edge women have had often had over men, when it comes to living longer, has been diminishing.  I've heard that has to do with the fact that more women have careers and long-term employment these days.
   
   It has been said (by whoever says things - experts, I guess) that much of it has had to do with the facts that men have often had careers and/or long-term employment.  It occurs to me, though, that men have often been the ones who eat lots of fat-loaded meals (maybe in response to cravings that can occur when one lives under stress and must keeping going, which is something that science now knows occurs).  My father (a slender guy) used to eat the whole bacon and eggs (cooked in bacon grease) breakfast, doughnuts at work, meat sandwiches, and meat and potato for dinner every night.  He'd put evaporated milk in his coffee, which he drank several times throughout the day.  He died at 62 of a heart attack (probably needless to say).  He was up at 5, had two hour-long commutes each day, got home after 5, ate his meat and potato meal, and then would often do thing around the house.  He didn't rest much on either weekend day, and he'd be up until about midnight.  He worked at the same place for 38 years.
   
   Stay-at-home moms can have 24-hour-a-day work, can be stressed out and tired, and not get any breaks; but apparently, it may be a different type of stress than being out working.  Besides, kids gradually require less non-stop work as they grow older.  (Just my guesses, anyway)

      Everything you have said I agree with, but I'd like to ad that women tend to gather in groups of other females and blow off steam, we tend to release our frustrations, and understand, sympathize and listen to each other, we like relaxing bubble baths and movies that make us cry (another release) where most men bottle it up and being with the guys adds to abuses to themselves, like beer or shots and getting upset at the football players at the game or working out in the hot sun too long to prove how macho they are.

       What happened between 1900 and 1930 to make childbearing more dangerous in the the U.S. than it had been in centuries? Is this when they started to go into the hospital to give birth?

          In short, yes. Doctors in the 19th century didn't know about washing their hands, so they killed many, many women who otherwise would have been fine with infections, and as far as I know didn't have any better a rate than the traditional midwives with the real problem births.

       In the 1930's, puerpural fever/septicemia was still the highest single cause of maternal mortality in the US, so even if they knew about it, it's safe to say that many weren't practicing it.
       
       In the 30's operative procedures such as C-sections were also becoming more common, and these had a pretty high mortality rate during that period as well, though I don't know how many of the women who had them would have been essentially doomed anyway due to the complications that required the C-section in the first place. ~shrugs~
       
       They were also experimenting with some pretty hardcore drugs to ease the pain of childbirth between the 1850's and 1950's or so - the type of drugs that knocked the woman completely unconscious - and considering that even a comparatively minor procedure like the epidurals used today raises the risks of complications, you also have to take into account the number of fatal surgeries potentially caused by the drugs, and so on.

          Yes, to all of that.  But I think the major difference was the switch from births at home to the hospital.  The 'medicalization' of it....coupled with the sanitation issue.  Women would die of "child birth" fever, which was often the result of physicians not washing their hands...going from working with cadavers in to the delivery room.

    And...women live longer because they are more adaptable, I think, and also in some sense have been allowed the opportunity to literally become more fully human.  What I mean by that is that they are allowed a full emotional range, to some extent, and as a typically looked upon as an 'other' or second class, have developed a great range in a variety of areas.  Outlets for creativity, ways to cope with adversity, etc., etc.  You could say it is the advantage that many (and only using this term metaphorically) minorities actually have over those who dominate them.  i.e., the way Jewish people developed great mercantile skills or skills in finance.  (They actually were not allowed to become anything else but 'money changers,' etc., say, in Shakespeare's day.)
    
    Also, the assignation of men to the role of work only...and at that, 40-60 hours at a company of the recent past/present, then retire and might as well die at 65...like some machine...was never beneficial.  This is another way in which I mean women have been allowed to essentially become more fully human.

    Lita, very interesting info I totally agree about us developing more fully because of social positions that men have. However I think that men are being blind like this because of unnatural guidance of our species in recent years like a couple of thousand. They are forced to wars, fights ,thinking about money systems, perverted sex and control over others because they cant control themselves.....how boring. I don’t think men were always like this. It would be interesting to know…. did men at one point live as long as us during some time in our species existence?

       I never went to any college studies but I take time reading and expanding on social culture and women’s spirituality.     He was set from his birth, they were wealthy in the “red land” and when they came here.....well the American dream etc... too much stuff maybe one day I will write a book about it.  lol When I get my English straight (that will take years probably).
    I think architects are great we worked with one on our house it was a great experience. They are brilliant men i liked him…lol shh.
    
    Are you getting married soon? Weddings are beautiful when it feels natural, not stressed. All the weding I visited were always nervous and superficial.

       Watch soap operas.  That's what my mom did.  It'll teach you not only how to speak, but the different expressions and how they are best used.  Just remember that soaps are a bit over the top, so don't expect the situations to be real.

    Women suffer and take in pain differently, i believe we sometimes allow ourself to fall and instead of picking our self up we look for other problems. If we werent so different from men we would live in peace and harmony forever and for a longer time..  Woman are different from eachother individually but all made of the same  matterial.  Just like men.  But we cant even begin to understand why they do the things they do.  Men have their destiny and soul, and so do women, seperate but equal.  Women live longer by statistics because of our genes we were meant to stay home,raise kids,and you know the rest, in the caves while men hunted, and got killed just like war for example.   Nature V Technology.  I think soon it will even out and our genes will change once more.  I think technology and todays world beat Nature.     This is an article from a paper in the 1920's that suggests that the increased death rate in women was actually a statistical aberration brought about by the influenza epidemic of 1918.

    This is a paper by the NIH that supports the newpaper articles contention.  Because tuberculosis was predominately a male disease in 1918 and the mortality when TB combined with the flu was high, a larger proportion of young, healthy males died during the 1918 epidemic.  Thus, those that did survive were healthier which would have artificially lowered their mortality rate compared to women of child-bearing age.
    
    Thus, women were dying at a similar rate but men had died more quickly then more slowly to revert back to the mean.

    This would be supported by US census data of the population.  In 1910, the percentage of males was 51.4%.  In 1920 (after the epidemic), the percentage of males was 51%.  This implies an increased death rate among males during the decade.  Of note, the percentage of US population killed in WWI (which would have been mostly male) was 0.13% according to data on Wikipedia.
    
    The bottom line is that the contention that hospitals and childbirth had anything to do with this would seem to me more conjecture by forum members rather than anything supported by data.  But I would be interested in any data presented.  Be that as it may, the mortality rates and life expectancies have reverted to their typical relationship.

                         I take it personally, I suppose, maybe I shouldn't.  But my husband is always sensitive, but strong at the same time.  He easily could last a day in my shoes, before I could in his, believe me.  He has suffered so much more in life than I have, but it has never got the best of him--and it has never broken his spirit.
                         
                         I admire, respect, and love him more than anyone else in this world, and so, yes, I do take exception to him being generalized as a "typical male"...

             Need or want...the end result is the same...we are all accountable for our choices and we all cope differently. The majority of men don't want to kill in war but they need to in order to survive.  I believe...most women would do the same in combat.

That is a method to make a lot of money (War).  You think god created war or did people who wanted money, power and ....  As a woman i would try to resolve than kill or be killed.                       There are still so many people born to poverty, and suffering conditions. We have a lot of life on earth thanks to women giving birth. More men than women take away life, at lest women can make up for it really quick. If men became more sensitive to violence like most women we can change the world now its corrupt thanks to... who? We have over populated city's and countries what more do you want?  During life what we do matters. love all.

    I personally knew a woman who beat her son in the privates until he bled....she hated all males.
    Suzan Smith drowned her kids....strapped in their car seats.
    Andrea Yates drowned her 5 children in a bath tub.
    Simply...women would be no better at preserving peace than men...we are all human beings with the same desires and faults.  Insanity is rampant in both sexes....and many times...hidden.

          Who started as hunters?  Who killed and wasn't hastened to fight? I love men but they are mostly high tempered and ready for war.  Look at our society before and now, men had aggressive rolls just like now Illuminati, secret society? On the money who do you see?  Elite system, never broken. Women are fighting themselves just because they don't want the expected woman roll.  Why then it took women so long to even be heard by men, sooooo long in history. I don't want men destroyed i have a son. Even when i didn't have my son i had most male friends.  Friends.

       Thank you for voting rights!  How many years are women voting?  Because Next time will have a women president just like a first African American president well half that. Maybe a small percent of women are more violent that's because of a poor life. When a women is happy in her life she wouldn't even take out anger on kids. Ill say to all those women stop beating your self up by beating your kids and you are not powerless by nature, nature is powerless without you. Be yourself easy to say when society says different.

    The point Tom is trying to make is that there are good men AND good women out there, as well as bad men and bad women.
    
    It's not fair to generalize like this--there are so many wonderful and caring men in this world, and I hate to see them all lumped into one category, as you seem to be doing with them.

    We live longer because after our husbands pass on, we want to end up with all our best lady friends in the Assisted Living Center stiring things up, being feisty, having our rooms cleaned for us, our meals cooked for us, and getting driven around whenever we want to go somewhere.
