Viable solution to keeping all your content if HP goes dark

Through a novelist/writer I trust and follow, I discovered a site called Authory that builds, archives, backs up, and automatically adds to your portfolio. They have a free version, one that costs just $12 USD/month, and a professional option costing just $18 USD/month. I think it's worth looking into given the downward spiral HP has taken and will undoubtedly continue to take until it disappears of the face of the 'net.

    Here's the link:

Please take the time to peruse the site to see if it sounds like a viable solution for you and your creative works.

    Peace,
    Bravewarrior (Shauna L Bowling)

You're welcome, Patty. I took a cursory glance at the site. I'll do a deeper dive in the near future.

Thank you, Shauna. Most likely, I will use my other website to promote myself. That is after I move my articles over from HP.

Great idea, Kenna. I think Authory might be an option for those who do not have a website.

Thank you for the link.  I’m not particularly tech savvy but as an experiment I have posted a link to my profile page and to one of my articles. So far it seems quick and fairly straightforward. I will explore the website in more depth when I have more time to spare.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Authory, Glenis. That's helpful. Let us know your thoughts after you explore in more depth. I'd be interested to know.

Thanks for sharing, Shauna! Authory looks like a great way to save and show your writing. I’ll check it out sounds useful, especially with HP going downhill.

I thought so too, John. Especially given the state of HP. I wouldn't doubt if it "goes dark", as is how radio and TV stations are described when they permanently go off the air, in the not-too-distant future.

It is certainly looking that way, Shauna. There is no real incentive to write here any more and provide TAG more material to repurpose, for no payment.

I'd rather have my material backed up as hard copies. The problem with relying on a site like this is that either you'll hit the limitations of the free version, or they'll start charging you at some point.

I would have thought that authors that have seen these sites come and go would be wise enough to avoid another one. Who is to guarantee them that some company is not going to come in and change the TOS so that all works saved at that site become the property of the new owner? You seem to be the only one that also points out that they can change and start charging too.

They have two paid options: 1 at $12/month and 1 at $18/month in addition to the free option.

            Exactly.

Most of these sites use a free service as a form of honey trap. So you shouldn't be surprised if and when they start charging you.

Paying $12/month just to have someone garner and keep an article on a server somewhere is expensive.

There's also the possibility of the company going under at some point, which is always a risk with the ever-changing internet.

There are other options that seem better and more secure to me. I'm not sure what's wrong with just saving articles to a drive or elsewhere. That's what I did.

Whether I'll ever use the saved articles is another matter. Online content writing seems like it may well be over. HP was the last of its type to survive.

Paul, all of my articles were written in Word before posting to HP, so I have copies of the originals. I have since also created pdf's of the online versions and saved them to my hard drive, although I don't know what good that does. Most of the short story and poetry contests I enter explicitly call for unpublished (in any form) work in order to qualify.

Mine just backup automatically from my documents folder to Google Drive. The photos on my phone upload to another Google account. If I need more cloud space, I just create another Google account to give me 15 GB free. I've got five accounts so far. One of them was setup for the email address for a local blog, but all google accounts provide Google Drive space.

I created two Gmail accounts, but I am using only one. The other one was created for the purpose of creating my YouTube account. But all mail comes to my single account that I am presently using.

I am downloading my articles from HubPages to my Microsoft OneDrive account in a PDF format.

Just be aware that the way that PDFs treat images varies. Sometimes images aren't stored and just placeholders are left in documents. Or alternatively images are split between pages. AFAIK, this is because HTML doesn't have native page breaks, so when webpages are saved, they're just chopped at regular intervals, so that can be through the body of an image. I haven't really done much research into how to avoid this. On Medium, the option to backup content doesn't save images with articles.

Edit: I just opened one of my Medium stories in the backup archive on my notebook. I was able to view images in the story. I remember asking support about why images aren't archived and I think they said something about it making the files too large. So I wonder have they changed things? I haven't backed up content since 2023.

Update: Actually I remember now that the reason images are viewable in a backup is that they're pulled from the Medium site. If you go off-line and try to view one of your articles, only the text is visible, not the images.

I found the reply from support:

      "Hello,

At this moment, images are not incldued (sic) in the export files to keep the file size under control. Thank you for letting us know this is an option you'd like to see when exporting your information.

      Thanks,

Yes, your point is true. They capture one or two photos, sometimes, as well as their advertisements. But not all images.
