Just an idea that has come to my mind.
First edition of the Contest
20 Hubbers ready to write 20 article, 5 article at week for all september.
The master (well..me ) will publish on regular schedule the argument of the article, example for the first week
On Monday i'll give the first title -> Write about your city
And so on in the next days....
Wednesday -> Write about a travel you have made
Thursday -> Write about your favorite fruit
Friday -> Couch potato or fitness, give your opinion
Saturday -> SEO, why everyone is talking about that ?
On Sunday me and other 2 judge will give a vote to any single post between 1 and 3, the total make your weekly grand total.
Repeat for 4 weeks, at the end of September we'll have the Jack Of All Trade King !
I i find 20 people that want to participate and 2 that want to be judge...we are ready to go
This is the basic idea, if you think is doable i'll invest some time to have soem more rules, main goal is to have fun of course
Signed -> A newbie but enthusiastic Hubber
I've covered all the "personal experience" topics already, within my first hundred hubs. I'm now working on doing hubs for traffic and sales.
However I think it's a great idea for newer hubbers to get their creative juices flowing.
I'll volunteer to be a judge!
You should write a hub to keep track of details such as:
Thanks a lot for the feedback, please check the Hub i've just made:
I'm open to any changes
What do you means about RSS feeds ?
There should be some special rule on the contest for that ?
And thanks to be the first Judge !
It's a good idea to cut down either the time, entrants or hubs. Why? Because in total that will be 400 hubs - and 100 hubs for judges to judge each week.
Should be minimum 500 words. 250 word hubs aren't quality hubs.
RSS feeds allow entrants to have links to their hubs placed on other entrants hubs quickly and easily. This way each hub is helping to promote all other hubs in the contest. So basically if everyone adds a tag to their hub called jackofalltrades or jackofalltrades[topic] for example.
Changed as proposed some rules:
1) 4 Topic at week (total 16 topic for every hubber)
2) Max 15 entrants
So for the judge 60 weekly hub and 240 total.
Changed also the minimum to 500 words, so less hub but must be of betetr quality.
I was really not aware of the possibility of have RSS based on tag-pages (shame on me ) that's a great suggestion, i'm adding these rules:
- Every hub must have the tag jackofalltrades-topic#, where # will be the number of the topic
- Every Hub must have an RSS caps with the address http://hubpages.com/tag/jackofalltrades-topic#/hot/?rss where # will be the number of that topic
I'm game. When you get the kinks worked out and you're ready, let me know!
Sounds like fun to me ...only, could we write on Tuesday instead of Saturday? I'm really trying to get out of the habit of working on weekends.
Tuesday is when the hubmob usually changes. But otherwise, good idea
Dang it...might just have to write extra-well during the week then for those Saturdays which will necessitate taking a zero...I can get to the computer some weekend days, but not all.
wychic i'm putting you in the list of Entrants, we have lowered the topics to 4 at weeks (perhaps this help a bit).
I hope you can join us , but if you have any problem just drop me a note and i'll remove you.
Thanks for the interest anyway
count me in, i just love writing... doesnt matter what the topic is, if it grabs me, i'm got
Thanks sugz, just signed you on the official hub (<link snipped, no self-promoting links>)
As recap this is the proposed week of a "jack of all trades", hubber:
Monday -> Topic 1 of the week published, score of the previous week will be published.
Tuesday -> Topic 2 of the week published (possible conflict with hubmob)
Wednesday -> Take some rest
Thursday -> Topic 3 of the week published
Friday -> Topic 4 of the week published
Saturday -> You have time until midnight to publish any missing hub on the 4 weekly topic.
Sunday -> The 3 judges will read the hubs and give votes, the judges will send the votes to Linuxaria.
Repeat that for 4 weeks
You do realize that there's a whole bunch of different contests, competitions and other challenges that are regularly offered here at HubPages?
Perhaps stick around longer than a day or two and get to know and interact with the community and see what it has to offer.
Hea, I just finished the 30 day hub challenge it's alive and fantastic. Hea darkside
For what i know there are the 30 days and 60 days contest + the Hubmob. These seem all great projects i just wanted to try something different..if this is a problem or the community think a newbie must stay put i'll go away in my small corner and cancel everything
How about you participate in these existing contests/challenges?
As it stands with 3 days, 3 hubs 8 forum posts (7 of them in this thread) have you really experienced HubPages?
How about trying to be a part of a community before you reinvent the wheel?
Hubmob seem a nice idea and probably i'll join some (if i like the topic).
But now i'll say some that will make me really unpopular: what's the goal of the 30 day contest ?
The thing i see most is "Wow i've raised my Adsense click with this", so seem more an auto promotional way of improvement own ads..not a real contest
There is no winner, no one that judge the work of the entrants, nothing, or am i wrong with that ? You have to write 30 hub in 1 month talking of everything you want, if quality is not an issue seem really easy to me.
Probably i'll try myself to reach the 30 hub in a month, but i'll not join the contest, because i don't see the difference in joining or not
What i'd like to start is something different, you don't choose the Topic, someone give you an evaluation of your work and after 4 week we'll have a winner. In the while i hope that hubber involved have fun with the Topic i'd like to propose (probably something they would have never thought to write about) and if they increase their traffic and adsense it's great, but it's not really the primary goal
But, as "Elite" if you officially ask me to stop this i'll do it,
Since you apparently know that Elite members have no official authority, what you wrote above makes no sense. Take a hint: Darkside has given you his advice and opinion already, there is really no point in asking him to repeat that.
A possible solution would be that you enter the contest as a writer, step aside as a judge, then find two more experienced hubbers to run it together with WryLilt. You would still get the credit.
I won't 'official' anything. I've given my opinion and my feedback.
If you can't see a problem with making your very first post as a thread launching a big idea after being here barely a day then we're on two different wavelengths.
I'll follow someone if I can trust them. And to trust them I need to see a track record.
I'll just throw my two cents in here for the fun of it . I'm definitely not a newbie, and have been aware of the existing contests for quite some time...but they just haven't really appealed to me. This one sounds like fun, and I'm more than happy to support the idea by participating. I don't see what it matters how long someone has been here, as long as they're promoting positive uses of Hubpages and finding ways to make themselves a productive part of the community. Honestly...where is the downside?
theyre great ones too darkside.. but doesn't hurt to have initiative and create something new??? thats what i'm here for
Darkside, I started a thread about unofficial prize contests; am yet to get a clear answer. If you could contribute an opinion, I'd appreciate it.
Elite members have no official authority, they are volunteers. Only members of HubPages staff have official authority.
I know this (but thanks for pointing it).
Anyway he's like an Elder of this "house" and i'm the last arrived.
So if he really think i've had a so bad idea i'll just give up and trust him.
PS: WE what about be the second Judge...chance that we got 10 entrants are going down with darkside against this project..but who know maybe i can find another 7 mad hubber
i think its a great idea.. why shouldn't us 'newbies' have a mind of our own and do what we want to? i'm all for bucking the system and playing a bit... as logn as no ones getting hurt..
Dr Seuss said..
It's mind over matter..
Do what you want, and say what you feel
cos those who matter don't mind,
and those who mind, don't matter!
i'd like to challenge darkside and website examiner to join in.. it might just be a little fun???
why do ducks follow each other when swimming?
because they're too scared they might find something outside the line...
not calling anyone a duck, but just friendly provoking to come an have some fun with the rest of us.. life doesn't always have to be cut an dry does it?
we're all entitled to our opinions.. or none of us would be here
With all due respect, what makes you qualified to be a judge? How can you judge hub quality without any experience in writing them? Do you know the rules and criteria for what hubs are good and bad?
Your idea sounds good to me in principle, I've already said this on your hub. If this goes forward, you should get full credit, and should have a big say over the topics.
This is totally correct WE
I'm more than willing to step down as judge and participate in the contest myself.
I proposed myself because someone must publish the topics regularly, take all the votes from the others, and in short make the contest work during the whole month.
What we need now are:
2 Judges to join WryLilt, Website Examiner, perhaps you could join, your name alone is a guarantee at my eyes ?
I'll join as entrant in the contest, changing the Hub now about this.
8yrs ago i was a team captain in a contest online.. i refused to be a participant for the fact i wanted my team members to have the credit for their participation.. i was the ONLY team captain that never took the place of any team member but sat on the sideline doing the organising and supported the rest.
it was a world karaoke competition, my team had 5 different time zones and i felt it was my duty as team captain to make sure it ran smoothly instead of taking someone elses time and place in the competition itself..
what i'm gettin at is, if you want to be in the contest fien by me, but if you want to be the one running it and not beign a judge.. i think is also a valid thing to do.
i hope the comp goes ahead, i'm lookin forward to it
Might I suggest 3 judges not including Linuxaria.
Linuxaria this does sound like a fun contest and if I had the time to join I would.
The reason that I suggest that you refrain from judging is because WE makes a very good point in regard to your familiarity with the terrain so to speak but also because since it is your contest I think you will have your hands full coming up with ideas and moderating each entry for compliance to the rules.
Just my thoughts.
Count me in as a second judge, next to WryLilt. All on the condition that other details check out to our satisfaction and that enough participants sign up.
Ohma, i already step down, the primary goal was to design something funny and be part of it, so now i'm in the entrants.
Once the rules are defined i expect that the 3 judges (thanks a lot WE !) will be totally autonomous in the choices.
So we now have
2 Judges (1 missing)
4 entrants (at least 6 more to start this)
Thanks all for the feedbacks.
Just another thought
What about the judging criteria?
You should probably come up with a standard that all hubs will be judged by. Relevance to topic, compliance to the rules, etc. It will not totally eliminate the popularity contest mentality but it can be controlled to a degree by implementing a scoring process that is sort of like
25% topic relevance
25% title, tags and keyword usage
25% overall readability
As i've resigned from judge i'll leave to them any decision regarding parameters to give points.
My starting idea is to keep this simple just 4 possible vote:
0 -> You don't have do the Hub
1 -> You have do the Hub and is not a great work
2 -> you have done a decent Hub, nothing too exctiing but nice
3 -> Wow, have you ever wrote of this topic in your life ?
6 Hubbers needed to start...come on hubbers, let's start September with something different.
Sounds kind of like a Not Helpful (or nonexistent), Somewhat Helpful, Helpful, and Very Helpful kind of structure...sure, it might be a bit subjective, but easy enough for judges, and probably keep consistency for what each judge considers worth X points. If one judge thinks a hub is a 2 and another 4, still fair enough if the two will still keep to the same points for a comparable hub .
i htink Ohma has a good point.. percentages and using normal judging criteria would be more realistic.. use the 1st 2nd 3rd 4th as a overal placing, but go on the percentages with a score level to try and reach.. i think it would provoke us each to work that bit harder to reach a desired standard even if it's only our own personal one. maybe even a beginner writer, medium writer and advanced writer levels? to give everyone a chance at their own level of writing...
just suggestions.that might be of interest
We failed goal of reaching 10 hubber ready for this contest for the end of this week.
So let's try to have 6 more for the end of next week, otherwise, like darkside suggested, Hubbers are not interested in new things...or simply this is not a good idea
But i still believe in this..so come one guys, let's try something different in September join the "jack of all trades" contest !
Where did I say that Hubbers are not interested in new things?
HubPages HQ have an official contest organized for September. So instead of trying to reinvent the wheel (or misquote people who have given you feedback) why don't you hop on one of the existing rides in this funpark?
Read it, i don't live near the sea, so most of the topics proposed are quiet hard for me, but still i'll try one or 2.
But with the cash coming i bet it will be a great success
And why i continue propose this ?
Probably my anarchic nature, i prefer things proposed from the "base" instead of taking direction from the organization.
Anyway, 1 week and this topic will be closed, so no more worry for you.
Similar idea to the past hubpages contests that have been implemented. We've also had contests by the hubbers where, one hubber chooses the topic for the next to write about, and then that one chooses for the next to write about, and so on. That one was probably the most interesting because you never knew what the person ahead of you was going to pick for you to write about.
I think the challenges set by hubbers are great for getting quality hubs that help bring in traffic.
I'm not sure if 12 days of experience is necessarily enough to be able to judge how hubpages works and the hubbers here, unless of course, you have another account that is older...
Anyway, good luck, but like darkside suggested, try the current contests and challenges before making one of your own. Hubpages is actually starting another one in a few days that actually grants prizes.
Thanks for the feedback Whitney, i agree that i've no experience and so i'm in the entrants and not a Judge
And yes, Hub official contest probably wil have much more success...they pay cash
Thanks again for the info of former contest made by others.
Keep in mind Linuxaria was here for only one day and proposed the contest and was to be a judge. That has since changed.
I think that today we can say that my proposal is officially failed
Thanks to the one that gave me suggestions and offered them as judges or Entrants.
Seem my idea is not been welcomed by the community and so i accept the verdict and return in my small corner (well' i've to write 15 hubs for the 30 day contest so i'll be busy for sure).
I just wonder why the official contest has hundreds of entrants, and i cannot get 10 people...cash ?
So the jack of all trades contest officially end now (for the moment at least)
Your proposal has not been properly promoted. Starting one forum thread was simply not enough. You could have looked around the site, looked for people - especially newbies - eager to learn and write. You could have posted links to this thread where such things were being discussed. You could also have contacted people directly, and you would probably have had 10 contestants by now.

This week's HubMob has taken more of a consumer, money-spending, self-indulgent shift, which is totally OK with me. You see, this week's HubMob Topic of Products, Products And More Products! Hub about a product that you love or that other people love is designed to appeal to that inner mall-loving,...

So I just completed my newest hub (even though its my 9th one, I still feel proud about it and now I was wondering how to promote the hub. My hubs seem to be dying, with some only getting several views daily, and I only have two strong hubs that bring in traffic. I really want to learn how to...
