What causes people to rationalize, even glorify negative conditions?  Why do people fail to acknowledge the toxicity of negative conditions?   For example, some people born into less than positive circumstances oftentimes praise their abject conditions- isn't that a sign of insanity or what?   Why do people born into negative, hellish conditions seem to exalt such negativity?

Your question needs more clarification. When you say "Why do people born into negative, hellish conditions seem to exalt such negativity?" are you speaking of politicians, businessman, or the common poor? If you are speaking of politicians, I believe the answer is simple:
Historians glorified and glamorized the "pauper" (my words) conditions under which Abraham Lincoln grew up. But in fact, his circumstances probably weren't any less than most people of his day. There were few wealthy then, and most common people strived hard to better themselves. That was true especially in rural frontier states like Indiana where Lincoln grew up. (He was born in Kentucky.)

Lincoln, especially today, is the idol of many people who put aside his many failings. He wasn't in sympathy with the slaves, but was making a desperate attempt to hold the union together. Hence, the Emancipation Proclamation did not free the slaves in the four states above the Mason Dixon Line of Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware. Congress had to pass the 13th Amendment in 1864 to do that.
But the point I was making is that this man is admired and glamorized despite his warts. Today it seems that self-made business people have picked upon that, too. "I came from nothing, but look what I have accomplished!

That was what I got from your question, but if you mean people like gang members, certain ethnic groups (like ethnic Mafia), etc., I have no idea why they would exalt their negativity unless it's a way of saying that they are important, too. It could be a backlash of the Have Nots against the Haves, which would not be unusual today. Or they may just be crooks, and they would still be crooks if they'd been born wealthy.
In the day of us oldsters, I saw many individuals from the wrong side of the tracks do just the opposite. They worked hard in school, some even graduated college, got good jobs or started businesses of their own, and became pillars (and sometimes activists) in the middle-class community. A few even worked their way into wealth.

To make it short and simple, GMW, to be born in any environment and never venturing into any other environments will cause one to be what the environment dictates for them to be. It is for that reason that human are admonished to leave everything we have been taught and know and observe without judging things according to one's preference in order to become man again.
