Top Ten Dramas: 2000-2009

Updated on November 22, 2009

The Drama movie is considered one that can move you emotionally. They are usually about love, life, loss, and even death. Sometimes they can teach us a lesson about life. Either way the drama movie holds an audience captive from start to finish. The Drama movie is my third favorite type of movie, my second is the ever popular action movie. Aside from dramas and actions I also enjoy the occasional horror movie. But my most favorite type of movie is the comedy movie.

Some of my favorite books are by Dean Koontz and Stephen King. If you enjoy stories as much as I do then you'll most definitely enjoy this series of top ten lists.

My comedy top ten lists cover the following years:

2000

Men of Honor 2000

Men of Honor is a movie about a Navy sailor who is black in a time when black service members were not allowed the same things as their white counter-parts.  Carl Brashear is a seaman determined to be a Navy Diver and Leslie Sunday is his trainer that is determined to see him fail.  The enduring spirit of Brashear makes this story uplifting and has you pulling for racial equality.  Brashear finally makes it as a Diver and serves his country with valor and honor.  In the midst of a tragedy on board a ship Brashear ends up being amputated at the knee.  The rest of the movie is about Carl trying to be reinstated as a Diver and Leslie helps him achieve that.  The movie is wonderful and follows these two Men of Honor throughout their Navy careers.

2001

The Majestic 2001

The Majestic is set in Hollywood of the 1950’s when the U.S Government was arresting people on suspicion of communism.  Peter Appleton is a Hollywood screen writer that has written a screenplay that comes to the attention of the government.  The studio pulls the script and Peter is out of a job.  So he goes to a bar with his sock monkey and tries to drink his troubles away.  On his way out of town he attempts to cross a bridge that is rain slicked and crashes.  The crash causes him to lose his memory and he is subsequently washed up on shore somewhere.  An old man’s dog finds him and the man takes him to town.  Peter looks awfully familiar to the residents of Lawson, and Harry Trimble believes he is Luke Trimble a fallen son of Lawson from WWII.  The town of Lawson welcomes Luke/Peter into their community as their own.  This is a dear story of love, loss, and standing up for what is right.

2002

The Good Girl 2002

The Good Girl is about a discount store clerk played by Jennifer Aniston.  In this movie she is bored with her mundane life in the sleepy little town in which she lives.  She is also married.  The Good Girl shows us what happens when boredom enters into our lives, as she strikes up an immoral and illicit affair with the stock boy at the same discount store.  This particular stock boy also believes he is the reincarnation of Holden Caulfield.

2003

Under the Tuscan Sun 2003

Under the Tuscan Sun is about Frances Mayes.  She is a 35 year old writer from San Francisco who has just recently been divorced.  Brokenhearted and suffering from extreme writer’s block she is urged by her friends to take a trip to Sicily.  While on vacation she takes a bus trip to Tuscany and ends up buying a run down villa.  Over the course of a year she hires a crew to renovate her new home while she attempts to find love.  Finding love for her is harder than she originally thought though.  This is a good movie about lost love and moving on with your life.

2004

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004

This movie falls along the same lines as Under the Tuscan Sun, just a little different. The movie is about love and about the falling out of a relationship. When Clementine decides to have her memories of Joel erased, he decides to do the same thing. As Joel’s memories of Clementine are fading he realizes that he still loves her and struggles to keep those memories. Eventually both of them are forgotten by the other and incidentally they fall in love with each other again. This is a great movie which reinstates the belief that you shouldn't mess with something that is meant to be.

2005

Casanova 2005

We all know who Casanova is or at least a little of what he was and what he did.  Being a Casanova means you are good with the women.  This movie is about Casanova’s love for Francesca and the web of lies that were told so he could be with her.  Apparently Francesca is being told to marry another guy that Casanova fools into staying at his house, then Casanova checks into the hotel as that man.  He attempts to get Francesca to fall in love with him so they could be married.

2006

The Break-Up 2006

The Break-Up is a movie about two people who have decided to break up.  Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn star in this movie.  The dating part of this movie is cool but after they break-up this is when it gets fun.  Both partners choose not to move out of their Chicago condo and stay in the same home.  As time progresses so does the battle of the sexes that has ensued.  Ultimately though there can be no winner and both parties end up broken hearted.  This is a fun drama that borders on the edge of pure comedy, but it is a drama.

2007

The Bucket List 2007

The Bucket List has inspired many people to make an actual bucket list.  Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman head up the cast in this movie.  Both men end up in the same hospital room and are both recovering from chemo therapy.  They make a pact and vow to fulfill a bucket list that Jack Nicholson starts.  The movie follows the two on some pretty fun adventures as they complete their list.  Unfortunately though, one man dies before the list is complete so the other friend finishes the list for him in a peculiar way.  This movie will make you laugh—a lot, but it will also make you cry.

2008

Smart People 2008

Smart People is another great movie about love.  Dennis Quaid plays a professor at Carnegie Mellon.  Lawrence is the father of a college student and a high school senior, but he is indifferent to them.  Suddenly, Lawrence falls to a seizure and is treated by an ex-student of his.  The doctor and him end up going on a date and they fall for each other.  Lawrence’s daughter is not too fond of the relationship and tries to break them up but Lawrence needs no help with that.  This movie is about how dumb smart people can be sometimes.

2009

The Soloist 2009

The Soloist is the tragic story of a schizophrenic celloist that failed out of Julliard.  He didn’t fail the course he just stopped going because of the schizophrenia.  Later on in the story we meet L.A Times writer Steve Lopez.  Steve Lopez finds Nathaniel Myers on the streets playing one of his broken instruments.  Lopez writes an article about Myers and support from the community pours in.  Lopez also tries to help Myers in a noble attempt at getting him to play at the orchestra.  This movie is based on a true story and will uplift your spirit.  It will also have you believing in the good in people.
