Top Ten Horror Movies: 2000-2009

Updated on November 22, 2009

The Horror movie is considered one that will scare you in one way or another, either directly or by what if this happened kind of way. Sometimes they can teach us a lesson about life, like if you are being chased by a killer don't fall down. If you hear a weird sound don't go search for it. Now the horror movie is not my favorite type of movie but the genre has had a lot of great films made and I do enjoy a scaring once in a while. My favorite types of movies in order are comedies, action, and drama's, then horror.

Some of my favorite books are by Dean Koontz and Stephen King. If you enjoy stories as much as I do then you'll most definitely enjoy this series of top ten lists.

My comedy top ten lists cover the following years:

2000

2001

2002

2003

2004

2005

2006

Final Destination 2000

Final Destination is the first of four movies of the same name.  I really liked this one because it started the whole thing.  The movie starts out as a high school student is bound for France with his French class.  The student then has a premonition that the plane is going to crash and flips out.  He gets kicked off the plane with some fellow students and one teacher.  Shortly after take off the plane explodes killing everyone on board.  The rest of the movie is about Death trying to get the survivors that were supposed to die.  The cool part of this movie is the gruesome ways the survivors die.  One of the survivors even gets decapitated…pretty gruesome.

2001

13 Ghosts 2001

Cyrus Kriticos dies and leaves everything to his nephew and his family.  Among the possessions are the house, money, and his collection of trapped ghosts.  When the nephew discovers a crazy machine in his new basement he is confused about what it is, so naturally, he turns it on.  When he turns the machine on he releases all of the thirteen ghosts from their trap.  The movie is about trying to get the ghosts back into the machine.  This movie is a fun trip and has many startling moments.

2002

The Ring 2002

When The Ring came out in 2002 it became an instant sensation.  The movie was originally a Japanese film that Hollywood successfully transformed into an American movie.  The basis of the movie revolves around a film that people watch.  When you watch the movie you see a ring at the end of it.  Then you get a phone call, and seven days later you will die.  One reporter finds this odd and watches the movie, then the phone rings.  During the seven days she must discover the secret of the movie and the ring to save herself and her new found lover.  The movie takes us on a scary adventure that is similar to a crime movie but much better.

2003

Freddy vs. Jason 2003

Horror genre lovers have anticipated this movie for a long time. There was just as much banter about who would win in a fight with Freddy and Jason as there is with Superman and Batman.

Throughout the course of the movie you constantly wonder who is going to win in the end. Jason is virtually indestructible in all of his previous movies as is Freddy. However, only one can win in this ultimate showdown. The story is told very well and the plot is very believable for a horror movie.

I will not tell you who wins in the battle but I will assure you that it is a fantastic fight until the very end.

2004

The Grudge 2004

The Grudge was a fantastic horror movie and was released in 2004. It instantly became a success. The story is about a Japanese girl that was murdered and she wants retribution from anyone. They say once you go into the house you will get the girls attention and she will start haunting you.

Because she is a ghost she can not actually kill you but she definitely scares the living crap out of you. The fear tactics of this ghost end up making you kill yourself. Overall I liked this movie quite a bit.

2005

Constantine 2005

Constantine stars Keanu Reeves as the title character.  In the movie Constantine has a gift of vision.  He can see angels, demons, and even ghosts.  The plot of the story is based around some people finding the spear that pierced Jesus.  Rachel Weisz is a detective that had a dream of her twin sister Isabel committing suicide.  There is only one man who can help her solve the case of her sister’s death…Constantine.  Together they embark on a journey of religious proportions that will cause Constantine to rethink his ways.  Altogether this is a great film which teeters more on the edge of suspense than horror but still great.

2006

The Hills Have Eyes 2006

The New Mexico desert was supposed to be vacant. The U.S government picked this site to test nuclear weapons thinking it would be deserted…it wasn’t. On a family vacation in a trailer to California the Carter’s got turned down the wrong road by a gas station attendant.

Along the route about 30 or 40 miles out of the way the Carter’s trailer breaks down in a seemingly innocent incident. The family is stranded out in the middle of nowhere when strange things begin to happen. Soon the family is hunted by mutant cannibals’ that finally escalates to a final showdown.

2007

1408 2007

This is a movie adapted from a Stephen King short story of the same name.  A ghost hunter who specializes in debunking stories of haunting across the nation, Mike Enslin, is writing a book about the haunting.  Mike’s publisher and friend recommends’ the permanently vacant hotel room at the Dolphin Hotel.  The room is 1408 and it is not haunted but evil.  The hotel manager played exquisitely well by Samuel L. Jackson tries to convince Mike not to rent the room.  Instead he offers a complete historical record of the room.

Mike refuses the offer and rents the room anyway.  At first it seems that Mike will get to prove wrong the theory of this particular room.  Suddenly, weird things start to happen and a whole slew of visions and other terrifying events occur.  Stephen King delivers on the story and personally, the movie is just as good as the story which can be found in Stephen King’s collection of short stories in “Everything’s Eventual.”

2008

The Eye 2008

A blind but still gorgeous Jessica Alba plays the main character in this movie about cellular memory. Being blind from an early age, Sydney Wells has found success as a violinist. Her sister, who blinded her by accident when Sydney was five, encourages her to get a cornea transplant.

The transplant was a success and Sydney is starting to see things…too many things. She sees dead people and other visions of horrifying circumstances. She soon finds out who donated the eyes and goes on a journey to Mexico to learn about the donor.

What she discovers will set the stage for the ending of the movie. This is a great movie and not just because Jessica Alba is in it, though it does help.

2009

My Bloody Valentine 2009

Ten years ago a vicious murder spree took the lives of many people, it happened on Valentines Day.  Tom Hanniger accidently caused a drilling accident in his fathers mine trapping six miners. Harry Warden is the only survivor but is in a coma.  It is assumed that Harry killed the others with his pickax to save oxygen for himself.  On Valentines Day Harry awakens from his coma and kills 22 people with his pick ax.  The deputy kills him and leaves Tom and his girlfriend as survivors.  Ten years later Tom returns for his father’s funeral and finds that his ex-girlfriend married and had kids with his friend, Harry returns also.  Harry comes back seeking revenge on those that survived his pick ax.  Axel blames Tom for the murders, but will soon find out the horrible truth.  A great scary movie.
