Top Ten Comedies: 2008
The comedy movie is considered one that will make you laugh a little or have you roaring with laughter. Some movies are very funny while others are only merely funny by tradition standards. As I searched for all comedy movies made between the year 2000 and 2009 I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of comedy movies, so I began to search by individual years. I was able to pick out ten best comedy movies for each year. My favorite types of movies in order are comedies, action, and drama's, then horror.
Some of my favorite books are by Dean Koontz and Stephen King. If you enjoy stories as much as I do then you'll most definitely enjoy this series of top ten lists.
My comedy top ten lists cover the following years:
Number Ten
Drill Bit Taylor
Drill Bit Taylor is a hilarious look at what a group of kids will do to prevent getting bullied at school. Luckily for them Drill Bit Taylor is an out of work ex-soldier willing to do the job. Owen Wilson plays the part brilliantly as he makes his way into the school as a substitute teacher that one of the real teachers falls in love with. However, Drill Bit will do nothing to the kid that is tormenting the three kids. He is trying to teach them to stand up for themselves by teaching them some self defense moves. The movie has a ton of lessons to learn while emphasizing Owen Wilson’s sense of humor.
Number Nine
What Happens In Vegas
Everyone always says, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” Well that is not true for this movie although it discusses throughout what happened in Vegas. Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher team up in this movie as an unlikely married couple from one wild and extremely drunken night of fun. The judge in this movie sentences them to six months of hard marriage. Inadvertently the couple actually falls in love but their antics cause them to break up. Cameron Diaz did a fantastic job in this film as she is a fun person trying to lead a serious life. Ashton Kutcher plays a man that can’t follow through with anything, until he meets her.
Number Eight
You Don’t Mess With the Zohan
Adam Sandler plays an Israeli Special Forces agent that is the best in all of the Israeli army. Zohan is pitted against the Phantom. They have a terrific battle of amazing feats and Zohan fakes his death. He fakes his death so he can travel to New York to be a Paul Mitchell stylist. Paul Mitchell turns him down and he is forced to work for a Palestinian hair salon. Zohan finally works himself into the position of stylist and ends up falling in love with the Palestinian owner. The Phantom re-emerges upon hearing that The Zohan is still alive and flies to New York to finish the battle.
Number Seven
Get Smart
Get Smart is classic TV turned into a movie. It was a great movie too. It stars Steve Carrel as Maxwell Smart and all he wants is to be a field agent. Maxwell is an analyst that passes his field exam with flying colors but his boss won’t promote him because he is so good at his job. Unfortunately, Control is infiltrated by Chaos and all the agents have been targeted and killed. So it is up to Agent 86 (Smart) and Agent 99 to foil Chaos’s plan to assassinate the president. Agent 99 is none other than the beautiful Anne Hathaway. Together the two sneak around the globe and discover the true intentions of Chaos and they discover a traitor in their midst. Maxwell is apprehended by 99 then he sneaks out of the detention facility and finishes the job he set out to do.
Number Six
Made of Honor
Made of Honor is a funny look at what happens when a woman and a man are friends for a long time. Tom and Hannah have been friends for ten years when suddenly while Hannah is vacationing in Europe, he realizes that he loves her. When she returns from Europe he plans on telling her this but finds out instead that she is engaged. She asks him to be her Made of Honor, which is funny. So he agrees and tries to break the bride and groom up but is unsuccessful. They travel to Scotland for the wedding and he tries once more to win her over, but she is still going to marry her groom.
Number Five
The Love Guru
Anytime Mike Myers makes a movie you can pretty much be guaranteed that it will be funny, and The Love Guru delivers on that. This is the story of Guru Pitka who is hired by Jessica Alba, the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs. She needs the services of Guru Pitka to help out her star hockey player Darren Roanoke. Pitka works with Roanoke to break his choke habit but is attacked by a rooster in the process, plus he is falling in love with Alba’s character. It seems like he won’t be able to succeed but he is offered a spot on Oprah and decides to do the show. As he is bound to leave he sees the hockey game in progress and gets a call. He returns to the arena to save the game and Roanoke.
Number Four
Marley and Me
Marley and Me is a touching movie of dog’s and obedience. John and Jennifer Grogan are newspaper writers that move to Florida right after their wedding. John gets a job at a local newspaper and has a weekly byline. Jennifer wants kids so to stall her desire for children John gets her Marley, a rambunctious golden retriever. Marley’s antics give John something to write about in his column and it’s an instant success. Throughout the story Marley drags his owners all around Florida in an attempt to train him. The funniest part of the movie is when Marley ends up humping the dog trainer’s leg and subsequently gets kicked out of obedience school. The heartfelt part comes at the end of the movie and makes it clear how even the worst dogs work their way into people’s hearts and won’t let go.
Number Three
Tropic Thunder
I don’t think there can be much of anything funnier than actors making fun of actors, which is what they do in this film. This movie has an all-star cast including Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr, and Tom Cruise. This movie is about a Vietnam veteran who supposedly saved a bunch of people during a routine mission. The veteran takes the cast out into the jungle and sets up the scene, but unbeknownst to him the war is real and a land mine takes the life of the director. Hilarity ensues as the cast deals with a real war with a heroin grower. The funniest part I think is when Tom Cruise’s character tells one guy to punch the director in the face, and he does it. This is a very funny movie.
Number Two
4 Christmases
Four Christmases is the story of a couple who chooses not to be married and also opts to go out of town around Christmas time. This year though their trip to Fiji is cancelled because of fog. Immediately upon hearing the news their family members call them up and sucker them into spending Christmas with all of them. The first trip is to Vince’s dad’s house to spend Christmas with him. Brad doesn’t know about the ten dollar cap the family agreed on. Next stop is Kate’s mom’s house, where hormones run amok. All the female members of Kate’s mom’s side are all over Brad the second they walk into the house. Plus when the baby pukes on Kate, Brad’s reaction is hilarious. Third stop is Brad’s mom’s house where Brad’s childhood best friend is his new step dad. The family attempt to play a family game and Brad’s mother makes playing this game impossible for Brad. The final stop is at Kate’s dad’s house where everything comes together for the couple. Overall this is a great family comedy for the whole family to enjoy.
Number One
Yes Man
Last and most certainly the best of 2008 is Yes Man. Jim Carrey plays Carl, a man who is plagued with negativity and says no to life. However, a chance encounter with someone from his past takes him to a Yes seminar. Terence Stamp plays the seminar guru that convinces Carl to make a covenant with himself to start saying yes to life. Carl does and meets Allison, a carefree girl that Carl instantly falls in love with. Carl experiences life at a hilarious rate and does everything that comes his way. He even finds a Persian wife on the web and marries her. Allison and Carl fall in love and have a great adventure together, but all good things must come to an end. The hilarity never stops even at the end, which is hilarious watching Carl ride the Ducati motorcycle.
