I grew up in an era where TV was the main family pastime. There we were dad, mom and the siblings spending quality time together watching our favorite shows. Among those shows were the Detectives. A wide array of characters that set out to “keep the peace” and thaw any criminal that was unlucky enough to cross their path.
This may date me but Dragnet was a picture from my childhood. Dad and I were at the edge of our seats enjoying the fast paced no-nonsense Jack Webb as his voiced introduced each episode.
What’s your favorite?
I love a lot of the old school detectives. They had to do what they did without all the high tech gadgets and no cell...!
My all time favorite is Monk. He's a more recent addition to the TV detective roles, but I love his mix of intellect combined with a fear of every day situations.
Hill Street Blues will always be my favourite. It became a benchmark for future cop and detective shows
it's not really a detective show, but i love watching The Mentalist
Detective Conan is cool too.
I love the British detective stories like Morse, Midsummers Murders or Cadfael.
That's Great! Out of curiosity--why do you prefer the British Detectives? I do love reading Agatha Christie by the way, though its been a while.
I'm old school and still stuck on the shows that are long gone. I don't watch any of the new ones. My all time favorite detectives were those on NYPD Blue, Homicide, and in more recent years, The Shield. I was so addicted.
Funny you should mention "the Blue" because that's my next question!
Detective shows are quite possibly my favourite type of tv programmes
Off top of my head -
From the UK - Maigret with Michael Gambon
From the US - Nero Wolfe with Maury Chaykin and Timothy Hutton
OK guys and gals (no cheating with google) what's the name of the detective show that sported this face?
Barnaby Jones played by Buddy Epsen of "The Beverly Hillbillies" fame, (He was Jed Clampett).
Update: Oops, didn't read far enough. I see they already answered.
And one more blast from the past ... who was this "mug" whose name was also the title of the show?
(He loved his lollipops)
Hercule Poirot played by David Suchet
You got it! Congrats! Don't forget to check my face-off question of Markle vs Poirot!
Adam 12 was an old favorite and I still watch it since it has come back. One of my recent favorites is N.C.I.S., I do not think that I missed an episode.
I love detective shows and I would have to say my favorite would be Columbo with Peter Falk. Monk was also excellent.
I truly loved his "laid back" approach!
Oh my goodness, I just remembered another all-time favorite: Barney Miller. That ensemble of detectives was the most hilarious on TV.
In that same vein would be "Car 54 Where Are You?" This is reaching way back into my childhood and is of course more of a "cop show" than detective.
Oh yea, Barney Miller was a great show and funny, all about detectives. I also liked Hill Street Blues. Even though it was more about police, it also had detectives. Much more realistic than other TV shows.
I love, Death in Paradise, Silent Witness and Lewis all in the U.K. Have you heard of these?

What’s Your Favorite All-Time Cop Show?Remember back when the Sergeant would have his morning meetings before the patrol officers would go out to do their jobs? You got it—Hill Street Blues. I must admit that was a television show worth watching. With that in mind—what’s your all-time favorite Cop...

I personally really enjoy DogTown on the National Geographic Channel. DogTown is more about rescue dogs, but they also show how the trainers in the facility train the dogs in their shelter; many of which have aggression and other behavioral issues.I also really liked Groomer Has It, which was on...
