Does anyone watch pornography for it's artistic value alone?

Okay, about a couple of years ago when Kevin Smith was talking about his film, "Zack and Miri Make a Porno", he said the main inspiration behind the film was because he always watches porn in the morning purely for it's artistic value, and NOTHING more.  Well, after hearing him say that, I joked around with my brother about it, as we both thought it was funny as hell that he said that with such a straight face.  No offense to Kevin Smith, who happens to be a great director that worked on such things like "Clerks", "Clerks 2", "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", "Chasing Amy" and others.  However, I doubt seriously anyone watches porn for it's artistic value alone.  Sure, that might be one of the reasons..roll  However, I doubt seriously you'll find too many people that watch that crap purely for it's artistic value allegedly.  lollol

Then again, I'm sure there will probably be some of you alleged intelligent hubbers that will say that I'm wrong, and argue that there is artistic value to porn.  Like all mediums, I'm sure there is, but all I'm saying is that I doubt seriously anyone watches porn for it's artistic value alone.  However, I'm more than willing to listen to counter arguments here, and if you want to admit to watching porn for it's artistic value alone, then I'll stand corrected.

By the way, this forum isn't meant to be taken seriously, so please try to be civil in your responses.  Thanks

Yes. I watch porn for...artistic value. Why, that's the only reason to watch porn...artistic value.

There is arguably artistic value to SOME porn but that's not the main reason why it's made. Hell even NORMAL non pornographic films aren't enjoyed just for artistic value. So yeah Smith is Bullshitting, no one watches Porn simply for artistic value.

I have never seen a porno let alone watch them. I heard of them like being instructional sex lessons for those who want to know more about sex or something like that. I don't feel weird about not watching any, I would not even know where to start anyway. Is the artistic value in watching porn an inspiration to the naked bodies or is it the the learning techniques as a boyfriend once told me when I refused to watch one with him. I was afraid for some reason and found it to be not what I wanted at that time. I do so love Art, but I was taught growing up that the naked body should not be seen or viewed in anyway unless you are married. Boy, Am I confussed or need to learn more. lol

Well, I'm sorry for confusing you, as that clearly wasn't my intention.  However, I think it's really a matter of opinion, but your boyfriend is right in some degree about how you can learn things from those type of films.  Not that I would know, but that's just from what I heard.  lol Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

Why do you call it crap? As a woman I am incredibly thankful for porn.  I am thankful for smut shops, hookers and gentlemen clubs.  Rape is out of control as it is...  It is fact that these simple forms of control and enjoyment otherwise known as "crap" to you, helps to relieve built up sexual tension for millions and millions of people all over the world. It is also a known fact that if these avenues didn't exist, rape & sex crimes would become so rampant that there would be no way to control it or penalize it.  There simply isn't enough man power in the police and medical field.  That's just for America too.....

So this crap as you say, saves lives!  I wish I could afford an opinion like yours.  But then I  am a woman.  Women have this to fear all their lives.  Why in the heck do you think it is necessary to put your own mother, wife, sister, whomever in that much more of harm's way?  Who cares why this guy watches porn.  Really who cares?  I am grateful he does.  Just some food for thought.

Why do I care?  I never said that I did.  What a person does behind close doors is really none of my business anyway.  I just called it crap, as this thread is really posted in jest. I just found Kevin Smith's comments to be rather hilarious in context.  I certainly never implied anything else.

Calling it a name such as "crap" is certainly stating opinion.  You cannot escape that so easily.  And you asked the question....  The gesturing such a question borderlines care.  you care to know don't you?  Yes or you wouldn't asked the question.  Come on I am just calling it for what it is.  Naturally I can see how you want to take my comment as a snarky remark.  But hey... I prefer not to be raped.  I take the subject a little more seriously than you.  Again naturally, women are raped way more often than men.  You really don't have nothing to worry about in that category.  A woman is at risk every minute of the day.  So sue me for being so frank on the issue.  It is what it is, and that's reality.

I didn't think what you said was a rude remark of any kind, as I just felt that you misunderstood what i was getting at. Please, don't try to breath in more to what I was saying, as it does bother me when people do that.  The word crap is just a word.  Seriously, I use that all the time in some of my reviews, but it never means anything.  Hell, I used it recently when I reviewed "The Change-Up", but I still gave it accurate review of two out of four; which was fair and lenient as far as i was concerned.

So you support the commodification of women because you think it might help protect you from some imagined rape ?  I guess the human trafficking supply of underage victims to satisfy rich paedophiles helps protect your kids too ?

That doesn't have anything to do with porn.

You want to make this about my feelings only.  Well nice try, but, go throw your bone somewhere else.  Facts are fact.

                P. S) Don't talk to me about subjects you clearly are clueless about.  Don't ask questions about my kids. Leave my kids out of it.  Someone just might mistake your intentions.  You got intentions when it comes to my kids? An expert on pedophiles are you?   You know all this intimately how?  Your comment is packed full of assumptions about me. Typical.  But maybe the real focus should be on you.    So since you seem to know all too well that porn featuring adults turns on pedophiles, again what does that have to do with my family?  This what I think...  I think it is ironic that you drag my kids into your comment while you clearly had the act of having sex with children on your mind.  So what' s the deal?  Why are you thinking of pedophiles, who we all know have sex with kids and then bring up my children?

You have some dirty laundry you need to air out to me?  Where you from?  What city do you live in China?  You want people to sign up for a product on your hub profile don't you?  What is it that you are really selling over there in China?  What country are you from?  America?  Are you aware of American laws are child pornography and  sex crimes involving children?  Don't get any bright ideas when it comes to my kids again.

Are you kidding me? Everyone else has simply responded to the topic at hand - you're the only one getting personal, and taking things completely out of context.

                  But I'll take the bait.

The notion that porn prevents rape is nonsense - the recent study that found this failed to also recognize that ALL violent crime had decreased over the same time period that porn had become more readily available (unless you're going to tell me that porn prevents all violent crime, which I'd be interested to hear), and provided figures that were flat-out inaccurate. While I also don't believe porn leads to rape, I do think it leads to the objectification of women (and the belief that calling them 'bitch,' and ejaculating on their faces is perfectly acceptable), and takes advantage of an already victimized sect of the population. Sure, there are some porn stars who had wonderful childhoods, and chose the profession because they simply enjoy sex, but as some of the best known porn stars like Jenna Jameson and Traci Lords have discussed, that is certainly not the norm.

Now, with that said, from the context of Steven's post, he wasn't even being so critical of pornography. It was a lighthearted question, which - of all the people who have viewed this topic - only you interpreted as somehow being a critique on porn and those who choose to watch it.

Personally, I have no issue with people who watch porn (otherwise I'd have an issue with a whole lot of people), but is it crap? Absolutely.

                    Hi Josh,

Take the bait??? Please. I was responding to Recommend1's comment, hence his comment is shown above my post.  Wow imagine that.........roll

But since you mentioned it, bait what?  Thanks, but I'm not into fishing.  And yes it does.  Google search.  Washington (St. Louis) University did a study in the 1970's, Google it, you just might learn something.  It had to do with overcoming sexual trauma. They developed the Sensate Focus exercise out of this.  They also studied pornography and it's possible significances with sexual trauma; hence rape, child molestation, etc...  It does not cause these things.  In fact the studies show that it had the opposite effect than what they initially thought.  So bait what?  Google it.  Do I need to pass along the doctors names as well, or what? You got facts to support your conclusions and comment?

Yeah, I didn't think so.  Typical.  Your opinion doesn't mean diddly. Facts, Josh, facts.  Try fishing for some concrete facts next time you decide to take the bait... Now I've been kind enough to share with you some wonderful tags to use in the search box. How thoughtful of me. You're welcome.

And another thing, who made you God over how a woman earns her wages?  You got a problem with women, working for themselves, in the best way they see fit?  You think we women can't think for ourselves, and that we should be locked up somewhere, not allow to earn our dollars any way we feel like it.  What's good for YOU men to do, not good for us women?  Yawn.

Your ideals went out of style in the 60's. If a woman doesn't care if she gets called a "bad" name, and matter of fact, earns good money by doing this and SHE is okay with it...., why are you then voicing this obvious opinion only about her life and what she does with HER life?  Oh, I see..., because YOU don't approve.  Well color me purple, who cares what you think about how she earns her dime.  It's her life, her money, her name, cum and all.  Who do you think you are?  Please.  Let's all see how silly little boys can be.

The only thing artistic about watching porn for me are the multitude of distorted faces I make during the viewing session.  Now that's art.  If I filmed my face during "certain" events, it would surely get a few million youtube hits.

There is some critical history associated with films such as Behind the Green Door, Deep Throat, and The Devil in Miss Jones that acclaims thier artistic merit. But I don't think anyone ever watched them for their artistic merit alone. smile

That's a very interesting insight, and I certainly don't disagree with you, as I know those films tend to carry their own deep history.  Look, as I stated earlier, I know there's always bound to be some artistic merit behind any entertainment medium.  But, I'm always skeptical whenever people say they only watch pornography for artistic value alone, as I know how people can be in nature.

          Good mention Sally.

By the way Steve I think this has been a great question.  I have to say for myself that I never thought porn had artistic value personally.  But i think my brother would disagree.  His collection is quite extensive.

If there was just one porn movie made in the world, it would have genuine artisitc value and historic value too but there are millions of videos out there from every country. Tons of amateur porn too. From a historical perspective a porn movie like Deep Throat, which was the first really famous and successful movie of it's kind might have significant artistic value, I intend to study the film more tonight, especially the camera angles... smile

OK, I probably have seen too much porn in my time but...

I think it is a certain amount of artistry that separates good porn from bad porn.

Theres the type that follows a standard sequence (putting things in various holes) with bad sound, russian accents, sloppy acting, cardboard sets. Too boring to be a turn-on.

Then there's the better stuff, which maybe sets a scene, works to be erotic, leaving a little more to the imagination rather than just in your face hardcore. Or at least gets creative with the setting and action.

That said, theres a saying often used to describe many hollywood special effects movies. It has the plotline of a porno (the storyline revolves around showing off the special effects or action sequence). We can't expect too much from any porn....good or bad.

Beauty of a thing lies in the eyes of the beholder. Porn or anything for that matter if badly made will not be a hit. The success of a movie lies in its story-line, characterization, curiosity element etc. Just wham, bam, thank you mam will not suffice.

The French Used pornography for people control and it worked. Do you suppose it is being used in this country for the same purpose? It can certainly distract one from the current issues. Give you an example of people control whenever a pot bust occurs rarely as they are, the media claims, "a control substance"  it the substance is under control, then who is the person or persons controlling it?

Well China's one-child policy in combination with a preferences, has lead to increases in crime and violence. With a decreasing female population its increasingly single male population has purpportedly led to ill consequnces.
