Any ideas on getting visitors to leave comments on your site? Does placement of the comments capsule have anything to do with it?

I could be wrong (it has been known to happen...once or twice) but I think that the best way to encourage comments to your hubs is to comment on other people's.

If you are a fan of someone, you get an email notifying you each time they post a new Hub.

I get quite a lot of visits to my Hubs from "fanmail", and my fans are often the ones who comment.

I would suggest watching your number of fans, and working on ways to encourage people to become your fans.

That involves things like participating in discussions, commenting on other peoples' Hubs, and, of course, becoming  fan of other people yourself.

When you find someone who is writing on topics of interest to you, there's a good chance your Hubs will be of interest to them, too, and you often attract their attention when you become their fan.

Write Hubs on topics that other people want to talk about.

commenting on hubs that have a similar topic to yours - becoming a fan of authors who write on similar topics works too

Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate all hubber comments, and I should have been more specific, but I was thinking of comments from non-hubpages members...I've noticed some members get a nice amount of comments from both fellow hubbers and external visitors. I'm guessing traffic has something to do with it (and as mentioned above, the topic).

I find it extremely rare for a non-member comments, or that they comment and I don't deny it as spam! The ocasional one who does is probably a hubber not logged in!

Some of my topics get more non-member comments than member ones.  If you want non-member comment, be sure you've set the comment capsule to allow non-member comments.  Having more traffic does bring more eyeballs, but really my most commented upon Hubs are very info-sharing in nature and that tends to invite comments and questions.... which goes back to my first post in this thread, "write Hubs on topics that people want to talk about."

The ending section of this hub will be of help:

It says how to get more comments on your hub. So far I am doing pretty good on the same hub.

I always place my comment box at the bottom of the page. I try to encourage comments by asking a question.

Spuds got a comment in one of his hubs by a founding member of The Wiggles! smile

Make sure you have a different folder for all the comments or join in activities that come to you inbox because it could full. Just a quick tip.

I wrote a hub on work at home books by paul and sarah edwards, several months ago and noticed that paul and sarah edwards left me a comment on my hub thanking me for writing about them. That was pretty cool.

Another way of getting comments is to write something really silly and controversial.  For example, that Barrak Obama is the Anti-Christ.

I'm still annoyed that someone crazy like this gets more comments to their hub  than my 'sensible' Hubs manage. So look out for my 'Hilary Clinton is really Wonder Woman' Hub and prepare to be generous with your comments!
