Have you ever debated whether you are sane or not? How do you know you aren't insane if you haven't debated sanity? If you debate your sanity on a daily basis, does this make you insane?

I think it is quite literally how people end up going insane. big_smile

what is not insane: you see a person standing on the edge of a cliff and for a brief second the questions crosses your mind to push them off just to see what will happen but you quickly put that away cause sanity says, good golly no way.  You give yourself a quick *shutter* at the thought and move on.

What is insane: To actually do it because you have somehow lost touch with reality, which is you know what will happen if you did such a thing but somehow convinced yourself that it was a gamble or where unable to control your... curiosity...something like that.

      big_smile

What if you were to push them off the cliff then helped them climb back up after they caught a rock on the way down? Would this be insanity returning to sanity?

          1. profile image0
sandra rinckposted 14 years agoin reply to this

LOL, I dunno but I am sane enough to know that that person is likely to kick your ass once you get off the cliff. big_smile  So what is more insane, letting them hang and calling it an accident, claiming temporary insanity or finishing the job.

Im sorry, I laughing too hard to finsih. big_smile

Having said that - my ex-husband mused on having me committed. Because I had the balls to leave him.

Sane or insane?  Well, that all depends...am I normal or abnormal?  Isn't really based on perspective?  I may be the most sane person in my mind, but others may regard me as totally insane.  (I'm not kidding with this last statement!) My sanity depends on how many kids are at home that day, the weather, the phase of the moon, my work schedule, my deadlines for projects and how much sleep I've had in the last 48 hours. Usually, I'm quite sane...except for the times that I'm not.  tongue

Having a debate with yourself does not make you insane.  It is how you cope with the world around you that gives us a clue to your mental health.

I had a friend in high school who was a complete genius.  You could give him any math problem, no matter how complex, and he would solve it in his head in seconds.  Ask him a few more, (out of sheer amazement), and he would suddenly dart down the hallway knocking over anyone in his way, screaming like a banshee.  Most of the time, people treated him like a complete idiot...and I guess to most of the people I went to school with, at least socially, he was.  But does that make him insane?

Ms Chievousposted 14 years agoin reply to this

The term insanity is mostly used by lawyers and Judges .. not mental health professionals, at least not any more.  I have worked with individuals with mental health problems for a while.   People are treated according to diagnosis and not grouped under one big category of insane.  Psychiatric problems do not discriminate.. they pose problems for the rich and poor and the smart and not so smart..  Your friend may have had true psychiatric problems or he just may have liked to get attention from negative actions.

If you think that you are insane, get a job at a psychiatric hospital.  There you will find what insanity really is.  If you can't get a job, talk to a janitor who works there and let him tell you about the people who talk to Jesus on a daily basis and then eat their own poop or smear it on the walls.

Now, I don't claim to be anywhere near "normal," but I'm in no danger of being locked up for my own good either.

Maybe some levels of insanity are harder to overcome than others. Maybe an insane one has different degrees/stages of insanity.
