I received the following email today. I'm tempted to give permission. How do I know if this is legitimate?
Dear Audrey,
Our dear Catholic School piano teacher has passed away after 50 years of service. I happened upon your poem, "Little Fingers of Love". I would like to use an excerpt or the whole poem on the back of her funeral program, because it fits her 'ministry to our children" so perfectly.
Would this be possible? If so, what 'reference' would you like me to use as 'copyright'?
Thank you,
Nancy Veronesi

It sounds sincere. Perhaps you could track down the person and speak to her personally. .
Firstly, don't click on the link they included. Type it into google. If it comes up as a legitimate website for a church, I think you are safe enough emailing them back and granting permission.
If still in doubt, call the phone number for that specific church as shown through google, and speak to someone.
This church is near my former home, and my husband has been to that church. A school is part of that church property, Sounds legit. You are blessed, Audrey.
Audrey, someones else posted something just like this not too long ago, with almost the same wording. That raises a huge flag with me. I would not give permission. In fact, you may want to do some investigating.
Nancy is listed as the Worship Director on this page.

You're only giving permission for your poem to be used on this one occasion. Most people wouldn't even have the common decency to ask, to be perfectly honest.
Plus, the website was registered in 2012 to:
All seems pretty legit to me.
I appreciate the time you've taken to check this out. I have given my permission. Thanks.
I think you should let them. I have had people ask me if I cared whether they used my articles. I also had a church use a poem and then adapt it to their use. I was a little irked with them that they changed the poem but I understood why they did it and made peace with the situation. I have had much more positives than negatives with allowing people to use my stuff. I would let them.
If you do not know about the address (the church), just forget it.
A live event is not going to do you any harm-- and you are only giving permission for use at that named event . I would just say what name to credit it to and say ok.
I agree. I let someone at a church use my hub about prayer for a sermon. I never had any problems and received a nice thank you note later.
I just checked out the link and think it would be fine. Unless scammers are faking an entire church website with Google map and even a church with that name at their address. Just ask why they would do that? More importantly how would they be able to get Google to put the church there?
There is no logical explanation other than someone in the congregation has seen and liked your poem. This appears to me to be a genuine request. Do what your heart feels is right, and ask that they credit you at the service maybe give out your url too so that people can look up your other work.
They are a Catholic church FYI.
Great advice. Thank you for taking time to check out the link.
I'd be flattered if that was sent to me! Just the fact that someone is asking your permission to USE your poem and asking how they can credit you indicates clearly that this person is respectful and understanding of a writer's work. The "dear" almost threw me until I read the rest of the email. I'm always suspect of the use of "dear", but in context this makes perfect sense. This is a lovely tribute to your writing, I'd say
Sounds legit. I'd take it as a compliment and a way of highlighting my work. They were respectful enough to ask about copyright credit etc.
Firstly, if it is genuine, Congratulation my dear. But check out the legitimacy first.
I decided to go with this request and received a lovely thank you note. Thanks.
Go to their web page and find their phone number and call it. First of all, I am sure they would be tickled pink to get personalized approval...
Agree as long as your name is included as the Author.
The second you write something it becomes your copyrighted material
Crooks don't ask. They just steal your work. I would be very flattered.
Actually, someone had a very similar request some time back, and it turned out it WAS a scam, so I think she was right to check things out carefully. This one looks legit.
Just what I needed to hear Bill. I granted permission. Thanks.
I think it's OK. They're just asking to use your poem for something non-commercial. Keep their request and address as a record in case you see it pop up somewhere unexpected.

Hey, who else?I was frustrated. They took two photos off of my Hub "17 Most Significant Animes in the United States". If I do a "Top X Blah Blah Blah" type list, EACH ITEM GETS ITS OWN PICTURE. That's just common sense. But no, for no reason, the editor took out two perfectly...

Is pinning to Pinterest a violation of copyright laws?Unless you are pinning your own work and pin someone else's work, you might be violating copyright as you do not own the rights to this work.

This morning I posted "Roles That Makes Cousins Special." I really thought that I had done a good job, only to receive a HubPages notice that the quality is substandard. I have gotten this notice before, and have been able to figure out the problem. Not this time. ...
