What causes some people to be so negative, even highly contentious, confrontational, and otherwise malcontented in responding to others.  Why it is that such people never have anything positive to say, only negatives in terms of the subject matter at hand?   If their lives are so miserable and lacking, they should look within themselves instead of lashing out on others?  Remember the adage- the fault lie not in the stars but in ourselves.

They never seem to be happy but are always morose, even quite venomous, hmmmm.  They seem to find everything wrong and negative, blaming the outside society and others, accessing and improving themselves. If others respond to them in an intelligent and logical matter, they continue to be relentless, even hellbent, regarding their negativity. What is your take on this?

It's probably all in your head. Sometimes people might be having a bad day or otherwise might feel strongly about a subject and post NEGATIVELY once in a while, and unless you net-stalk those people you will only be exposed to that side of them. You probably also don't agree with their position on a subject leading you to throw out all kinds of insulting labels.

Once again, you ask loaded questions.  You seem to be constantly looking for reinforcement of your own beliefs. This is not useful for thinking critically.

"If their lives are so miserable and lacking"

Who said that? You invented that in your mind. You should be more aware of your misconceptions about people.

I believe this type of person is just plain miserable and unhappy in his or her life. There are always negative people and those that like to bring other people down. The saying "Misery Loves Company" is so true. I try so hard to avoid this type of person. However, you will find them in your own family, at work or your circle of friends. I just don't let them get to me.

I don't think it is conceit at all. It is more like a mental malaise, a deep dark somewhat abysmal mental malaise. Some people are just plain negative.  They see the storms and tempests of life and situations but never the rainbow and sunshine.  Thank you for your response and have a lovely night!

gm, I think the type of people you describe are very unhappy in their personal life. They may have a total lack of control over what is going on in life and feel the can gain some control by being forceful, critical and aggressive in the forums. For many of them, it may be the only place they have to express their anger. which stems from fears in their life at lack of control.

Then there are those who just have no sense of respect for others and do not know how to debate in a mature fashion. They are not open to learning from others, they prefer to dictate.

Let me think.  The last time I posted about this myself, about 40 pages of comments later I was being attacked for being the aggressive one for pointing such behavior out and not naming names but allowing folks to use their own interactions to "think" who folks were.

A nightmare scenario in which I simply started a forum post off with a few questions.  It won't be long until it happens here as well.

[Another old post of mine that I just deleted from another site. big_smile]

    Forum Fracases That Never End…

The thread starts out innocuous enough in most circumstances.

But then someone says something... And someone else disagrees…

And then there is disagreement back.

And each time it is escalated just a little bit more.

Then ego becomes attached. At which point, both positions become intractable.

    And the escalations continue…

    And others join in.

And the escalations continue some more.

    Until finally someone gets banned.

So, I guess the fracases do eventually end afterall. Never mind.

Then again, others have now taken up "the cause”.

So the fracas does continue; just with varying participants.

And by now, sockpuppets begin to show up.

    More and braver escalations…

Until the “magic words" suddenly appear at the bottom of the thread…

    “Closed to reply”

(The ol' cricket treatment is what I am used to. sad) I would be more concerned about no response than a negative one. (Maybe thats another reason to appreciate the negative ones.)

Check out why you care so much about it, gmwilliams. The forums are completely voluntary. If you don't want to read people's negative comments, you can get the gist of what they are saying, skip it and wait for someone whose response you like better. I'm still pretending that I'm here just to practice my writing skills. Nothing anybody says can affect ME! I am sure I can just sit back and watch TV any time I want… I am not addicted to this new interactive form of screen entertainment! I don't think about responses to things in the middle of the night or laugh at responses I have read on HP forums while at work. I can stop meandering in and out of the Forums any time I want… any of us can...
    Right?

Kathryn....I respect your easy-going, common sense attitude.  It's so much less about an individual's actions than it is about our reactions.  As I mentioned in my comment, the various and diverse personalities are limitless.  Often  times nasty, miserable people test our patience and tolerance and that can be helpful practice.
It's senseless to allow the negativity coming from an unhappy person to affect us in the least.   Thankfully we are in control of our own thoughts & translations.  When we are happy and at peace within ourselves and know we're on the right path, it's nearly automatic that we needn't pay the least bit of attention to the pathetic drama coming from some lost and lonely soul.
For me......I like to simply tell myself, "Well, patience is a virtue.  Obviously this person has a ways to go yet before they are able to rise above the riff raff, but one day they will come to that realization." Until then, their favorite pass time will be judging others.    Wishing you Blessed holidays.  Peace, Paula

As a Christian and someone who loves debates I can relate to this. I use to debate on facebook (I know-I know. . .), but 90% of the responses based their whole argument on me being wrong because of what I believed. Rarely did I get someone who actually stayed level-headed and dealt with the topic in a logical manner. If I felt they were getting out of control I would take the time to message privately and discuss what might be the core of their issue. Most times this ended well, and often found that the person was lashing out because they had a severely negative prior experience with so-called Christians. It is true, we don't live up to the name we ought to. However, I have had a few people who thought I was spewing hate-speech, despite people responding to simply claim to the contrary.

I think it is all to easy to label someone based on little-to-no information about the person. We should spend more time getting to know people, understand them as a person; even learn their individual situation. Fact remains, too few are willing to pursue this route and would rather believe the person is ugly on the inside. After all, it is easier that way. However, most people lashing out are completely kind and courteous under normal circumstances. Yet the topic they choose to respond to may set them off just so. We all have that 'button', and if pressed can send us into our own negative-filled frenzy. Some have multiple buttons, lol.

Now I'm not neglecting those who truly are filled with venom and simply want to watch the world burn, but the majority are not this way. I would even wager that some of these venom filled souls are inflicted with something as well. We don't know unless we ask.

Of course choice plays a big role too. Past experiences, parental influence, and so on do not excuse us of our choices to act as respectable human beings. It might make it harder to will ourselves to be respectable and kind to someone we find distasteful, but it is a choice nonetheless.

Because misery looooves company! Or at least some people get joy out of bringing others down. This is nothing new, it's just somewhat easier to shoe these toxic people away when they're in real life. On the internet they just gather in swarms because they know they have power there... the power to make other people angry or miserable. I think a lot of these people might be genuinely nuts as well, but this is just a theory...
