Unrelated comments on a Hub

   Hi,
   
   One of my Hubs has been showing comments from different people that are unrelated to my post. It seems to be entire discussions going on about another subject. Is anyone else seeing this?

      I have not run into this myself. Can you adjust the settings so that you do not receive this type of commenting on your hubs? I know you do not have to let every comment go through unless you approve it.

      I got one too as a comment in a discussion (old squidoo lens) that didn't make sense at all and was addressed to someone called Anna.

      Unfortunately, SPAM comments can be part of online publishing.
      
      If you have not done so already, we suggest that authors set their Hubs such that each comment must be approved before it is published.
      This will make sure that SPAM or other problematic comment text doesn't just show up on your Hub without your knowledge.
      In addition to that, please mark any SPAM comments as such.
      Doing so helps us identify and in some cases proactively remove or block other SPAM as a result.

   Looks like your hub has been selected as someone's "private" chat room. As to what to do about it, I'm not sure. Arguments could be made for both sides.

   It's your hub, you moderate the comments.  If they are off topic then delete them and place a comment yourself stating why you deleted them.  People can cry freedom of speech all they want but placing unrelated content your hub is rude and does not deserve an audience.

   We can set comments to be approved by us if we want to. Otherwise, I guess we all run a risk of people borrowing a hub for chatting. (I could have all kinds of fun with that.)

   I tend to delete comments that are unrelated to the Hub or rudely disrespectful to the Hub or the Hub's comment contributors.

   Laura I'm getting spammy unrelated comments too - 5-6 of my hubs actually - and I'm deleting them except one which asked for feedback on a piece of writing and my hub had to do with writing. Curiously - all these comments are from 'guests'.

   I had a few of these kinds of comments last week -- really bizarre comments that were only tangentially related to the hubs they were on.   It was like someone lifted a response to another person, and plunked it down in the comment section of the hub (with a fair amount of bad grammar and spelling too).  I finally set my comments to not accept posts from "guests".    (That may be overdoing it, but I don't get that many true comments from guests anyway.)

Is it for sure that if you were to lose your FB account that the comments would still be on your website, you 'own' them because they are part of your WordPress site? That is the only reason I haven't install one of these yet because I don't want to 'lose' all my comments if god forbid something happened to FB or my account ;-)."
    
    They seem to be stealing comments from one site to put the comment on others. New kind of spinning software is my guess.

       Yes, those are the types of comments I had been getting too!  They're nonsensical, written for someone else, and out of place for the hubs that they're on.
       
       I wonder what the heck is the purpose of that kind of commenting?  Are they trying to place links in their comments and hope they go through?

    I have been getting comments to my hubs which are obviously completely out of place. They have been written for other hubs but appear on mine. How does this bug happen?

    Yup, been getting lots of these. I deny, mark as spam (so hopefully someone at Hubpages will take note) and delete. Hard to see what the purpose of unrelated comments is but clearly someone somewhere must get something out of them.

       If you delete after marking as spam, the team can't see them.  I understand it's best to mark as spam and leave it, then they can see the IP address.

    I got those unrelated comments too and deleted them or marked as spam. I have to approve the comments before they will be shown here. You can do that, too.

    That's okay, I just got a weird comment (posted below) from a brandenfleck13 with IP address 74.137.213.24.....um yep...delete. But does this make sense to anyone? lol
