   Probably not behind (every great man) but more likely than not for most of them. The phrase generally means the woman has made certain sacrafices or delayed the pursuit of her own dreams and aspirations in order to help the man achieve his.
   
   Whether it's actually getting out there for example to help him campaign in order to win an election or taking care of everything else in his life so that he can have a singular focus to pursue his goals. Their willingness to sacrafice at such a high level is what leads many people to consider these women great.
   
   Many of these men alone probably would not have had what it took to reach the pinnacle of their careers.

   I wish men were as willing to sacrifice so much for their wives.... its a terrible double standard that should be abolished.

   Of course--every man has a mother--, and most all mothers are great. She is most often the greatest woman behind her son from the day he is born---and don't you forget your Mama.

   Yes and No. Woman stand behind loser men as well as good men. Losers-Clinton. Weiner, Edwards, gingrich, Rangel, come to mind. Their wives stood behind them

   Probably so, since generaly women are more giving and sensitive than men.  This is not a bad thing, provided the man appreciates her.

    I would say that behind every great man there is a history of supports and inputs from a community of great men and woman.
    
    Great men learn how to be great men from great parents, great teachers, great spiritual leaders, great partners and great friends.

    Well... Alexander the Great was gay as a rainbow (theoretically). So you have that, and all the crazy single geniuses. But yes, for many men, there is a great woman supporting them.

    Yes, I think so. A great woman vivify a man in his work or every position in his life. Woman has the temper to do that.

    I would believe it to be true because most men who actually have worth have been raised or have dated a woman of worth. The woman is the one who has what it takes to raise a child properly if she has been raised properly herself.
    
    SHE IS THE TEACHER. Most men know this and this is the main reason why men are drawn to women. They want someone to teach them. To be a "mother". Nurturing, warm hearted and caring but, a little tough. Love them enough not to let them fall!

    Maybe not all the time. Maybe because man draw their inspiration from women, specially the one they love.
    
    But let us not forget, in every man's fall, there is also a woman involved. Not all of course, some do.

    I don't trust women for most things and don't normally want to tell them much because they won't be able to help most likely. I believe that behind some great men their might be a great father because a father will understand a son much better if he is a good father.
    If there was ever a woman who I believed could remotely be behind me it would be my mother. I am a great man because my parents told me so. They are dead now and I write this sincerely to respect them
