What is your biggest phobia and how have you gone about conquering it?
we all have fears and phobias how do you go about mastering a fear or learning to live with it in a way that it doesn't interfere with your life?
Mine is heights, especially if it's heights over water like very high bridges that you can walk over. It's like an instinct that just kicks in and takes over - it's overwhelming and nearly impossible to be rational. But I just avoid heights whenever I can. If I have to, I walk as far away from the edges as possible, look straight ahead and tell myself not to be so ****** stupid! It usually gets me there without having a nervous breakdown.
Mine was cats, so I adopted one and we in the long run became friends.I still don't like cats (so she went to the SPCA about three months later) but I am no longer afraid.
spiders make my skin crawl. In the summer months I do a lot of gardening and have to deal with them, so I've gotten used to the little ones..but the big ones make me scream and send me running like a crazed woman...my husband thinks it's hilarious. He'll hear me scream from the garden and all I get in response is laughter...he's cruel. lol
A phobia is an unrealistic fear of something that is (mostly) not dangerous. There are many aspects of the problem which could be discussed, but I won't do that here and focus on the question, "how do you go about conquering it?". Resist the urge to avoid the very thing that arouses the anxiety. Repeated exposure to the object that causes such a reaction will eliminate the sometimes intense and overwhelming anxiety which it provokes. This is simple to say but difficult to do for many people. It is so difficult at times that it can't be done without the assistance of a psychologist or other health care professional.
lonliness...this scares me too much...and my prayers helps me a lot to overcome the fear!
My biggest phobia is confined spaces. I conquer this by making sure that all doors and windows are open whenever and wherever possible!
The fear of expecting something bad will happen. But, it's gone now through constant short meditations on a daily basis.
Clowns.. I'm shit in my pants every time I see a clown. Those big feet and the over-exaggerated smile.. they look like they will eat me. I hyperventilate and pass out of fear when I see a clown. To me, they are boogyman and I've never gotten over that.
I am not afraid of demons, heights, water, confined places or anything else but the biggest phobia of my life was “will I ever be able to stop smoking”. So today, I am going to tell you my story how I mastered this phobia and conquered it to the... read more
I fear sleeping in a new room especially without power. Even if am with someone i am scared. At first i let nature take its toll on my phobic plight, i later decided to stay secluded concetrating on the problem since i heard that concetration can give me control over things that happen naturally. I created a warm room in my mind with beatiful lanes outside and i assume neighbors who sleep lat arre home. I then substitute it with the gloomy house.
Stage phobia. Even at my wedding, I was looking for ways to get out of the spotlight. I am going to do karaoke next week as a first step to overcoming it.
One of my biggest phobias that I have (almost) been able to conquer is skiing. The first time I ever tried it, I had a bad crash. I keep going, but every time, the first day, I cry at the top of the hill. Then I am okay. I'm not sure if I could call this phobia conquered, but definitely a work in progress.
Mine is driving after i had an accident involving a little girl, it was horrid but im trying my best to over come it by driving when i feel comfortable and confident which is very rarely but im going to get counselling for it which should help. I really miss driving it was my freedom so i want to get back behind the wheel again!! x
Driving on the busy expressway. I would get anxiety every time I had to get on it. I completely got over this by first trailling my husband on the highway and then slowly increasing my driving time. I basically had to build my confidence level. GPS also helped.
My phobia is the fear of heights. Well I conquered it by not going to "Wonderland", Toronto, by not doing a sky jumping, and by not rock climbing. I believe fears are always there. All we have to do is live with them, and do not let them happen.
When I was younger my brothers (I have five) would tease me more whenever I see flying cockroach hovering around. I would run around and duck to the nearest person like crazy, but then they'll realize they will not be able to watch their favorite TV as long as they have me screaming. They have to eliminate the pest or there's no peace. It is still my phobia until now.

Do you have a serious phobia or 2 and simply accept that it is what it is and live with it..OR...have you considered therapy to try to get through it and no longer have to deal with it?

What phobias do you have or have overcome?Spiders, snakes, highways, bridges, elevators, restaurants, tunnels, the dark, water, dogs, cats, driving, bugs, clowns, public speaking, heights, or bees. Whatever it may be, how are you dealing with it, how has it affected your life, and how did you beat...
