    Honestly, love and trust.
Although I've only married this year, I've seen my grandparents' relationship (50+ years of marriage) and am able to see my parents' marriage, which is 30 years now.
The upper 3 values are the most imporant, as without one or the other, relationships can be very insecure. Things like deep, head-over-heels love really can fade during the years, but that usually only happens when the time spent together shortens in the everyday grind. If the partners are still able to find/make some time to be only together and go out sometimes, speak to each other and always be honest and trust the other, then nothing can break them apart.

Well - I am getting married this upcoming December 28. Admittedly, I am a divorced mother of two young teen sons. Now, I am going to remarry my most loving and amazing man. Sometimes, my fiance and I usually talk about the roles of the husband-wife and marriage.

    * Honesty, integrity, love, and effective communication are very important to the husband-wife relationship.

    * Winning every argument, seeking every revenge, battling any terrible attitudes, and throwing out any unpleasant words are really not necessary in the husband-wife relationship.

Trust, love and care is very important in marriage. I also feel that being demonstrative is showing your love can quell any doubts your spouse might have and build a strong relationship.

Respect (both self-respect and respectful towards each other)

Communication (always maintain open communication, i.e. can talk about anything)

Trust (both trustworthy and trusting of one another)

I think for any relationship to work, you MUST have a minimum of respect, communication and trust.
