What type of nuts are these?

They are roughly about the size of a quarter as shown in the photograph.

They look like walnuts to me.  But there is some glare in the photo.  There are several types of walnut trees depending on your location.

The hole story: You were supposed to pick the BEST answer not the WORST! This is definitely not the correct answer.

I agree, those definitely aren't walnuts unless they are miniature English walnuts. Crafty didn't even specify what kind of walnut.

They look like Kukui nuts, in my opinion.

They are definitely Hickory nuts. Hard to crack but delicious. The taste is similar to hazel nuts. Not many people collect these in these modern days but years ago they were a delight for home bakers. Use the same as walnuts.
If you can get these before the squirrels do you're in for  a treat.

I agree with you. They are hickory nuts - smaller version of walnuts.

I would have taken them for macadamian nuts...but I haven't seen a hickory nut....luckily I have seen and eaten hazelnuts, too. :0)

I was expecting to see a picture of Obama, Reid and Pelosi.  Those appear to be hickory nuts.

I have to agree with galleryofgrace & Ming Armstrong that these are Hickory nuts. Here's a picture to back up their good call.

I wish the picture were a little better. I vote for the hickory nut because they are too small for an English walnut. This looks like hickory nuts that have been hulled. We had several hickory trees in our yard when I was a child, and the nuts made a good snack for us kids.
