When nobody is reading your hubs!

   I've come to the conclusion that in order to get people to even look at your hubs, you must post in these forums. It may help get a few more fans, but if it doesn't, what have you lost. I've come here to hubber's hangout to see if anybody will become curious about my writing. I'm guessing I'm not the first newbie to try this tactic. LOL I just though hey do whatever it takes and see what happens. Artin2010 says come on in, read and comment. What's it gonna hurt if ya waste a little more time checking out another persons works. I just read the advisory to the left and now I must apologize for having community spirit. Darned coercion tatics, gotta love it!
   Anyway, I want to know more secrets about fan collecting, Google adsense, Amazon affiliates and getting the traffic to your hubs to get the numbers. I know I am not the first person to come to forum thinking, how do I make this productive.
   Guess I better read the forum rulz huh!

      Who have you written your hubs for? The HubPages Community? Or the World Wide Web?
      
      I have some hubs written for the HubPages Community. How To Hub hubs. But they don't do well with Adsense. In fact, I have Adsense switched off on all of them. No use raising the ad impressions and having the Click Thru Rate drop for the chance of a bunch of ads that miss the mark.
      
      You don't need to know secrets about fan collecting. Write good articles, fans (or a proportion of them, not the ones that merely fan in the hope of being fanned back) come later. Don't put the cart before the horse.
      
      Your goal should be: I will write about things that I know about, and that interest me.
      
      Now find out: How can I become a better writer?
      
      Hone your writing craft. Learn something about keyword research, but don't lose sight of your goal (don't chase after high paying keywords). Publish original quality content. Add some photos that you've taken yourself or have the rights to use. Use Amazon products that complement the point of your hub. Throw in a Youtube video if it's appropriate (don't feel that you HAVE to). If you want feedback, add a Comment Capsule. If no one comments, don't let it bother you.
      
      That's how I approach hub making.

         I appreciate your knowledge Darkside, I will look into SEO and KEYWORD theorum. I guess it was a good idea to join in the forums and try to get some hubber love. Thanks, all input is telling me to relax, focus on good hubwriting, pictures and video are helpful!

      hmm i never come to the forums with the intent to collect fans. i just come to read people's comments and post my own because i like that. i want someone to fan me because they like my writing...anyway good luck in your endeavour!

   You have to spend a lot of time in the forums.  You need to do a lot of reading in forums.  There is a lot of good advice and references to helpful hubs and forum threads.  When you feel like you have something valuable to add to the “conversation”, do so.  Over time, you do start to pick up some fans based on your intelligent or witty posts.  Notice I now have over 200 posts.  I would say it took about 100 posts before I actually started picking up fans and readers from posting. 
   
   Read lots of hubs.  Read hubs of hubbers that peak your interest in the forums, or search and read on topics that interest you.  Don’t just read though.  Leave meaningful comments.  I’ve started to pick up some fans from my comments to others’ hubs.
   
   Answer some of the questions.  There is an “answers” tab on the top of each page.  Go to it, then you can click on show questions. 
   
   Become a fan of other hubbers.  Leave fan mail to say why you fanned them. 
   
   Join the weekly HubMob.  New topics are posted each Monday.  The forum thread is at the top of the Hubber’s Hangout forum, along with the HubNuggets weekly thread.  Read the weekly HubNuggets nominees and comment on those hubs.

   Artin, you've only been here two weeks - patience, patience!
   
   There is a wealth of information here, both in Hubs and on the forums.  Read all of Darkside's Hubs on how to Hub, for a start.  Check out Lissie's Hubs on making money online.
   
   Some basics for you:
   
   Fans are people who admire your Hubs.  So, you have to write good Hubs, and you have to become a member of the community so people will know you exist.  That doesn't mean opening new threads to blow your own trumpet, it means participating in a lively and interesting way in the forums - then people will be curious and check out your profile.
   
   Second, fans won't earn you a cent.  They are other Hubbers, and Hubbers don't click on ads.  Your paying traffic will come from search engines, and it probably won't arrive until your Hubs have been live for three or four months, no matter how many you write.
   
   I hardly earned a cent for my first three months, and it took me over 9 months to reach my first payout.  That's a fairly common experience.  I'm now getting a payout monthly, so it does get faster with time.

   Forums help but quality hubs get traffic from outside of the HubWorld.  That is the kind of traffic that is really beneficial.  HubWorld traffic is good and the other hubbers give great feedback on improving hubs but in the end, if you are trying to build traffic it is going to have to come from outside HubPages.

   92% of my traffic comes from search engines and outside sources.  8% comes from HubPages.
   
   If you really want people reading your Hubs, you need to make Hubs that talk about things that people in the wider world view want to read about and which contain good textual content so that search engines think you are worthy of listing in search results.

   Unfortunately you are completely wrong. I have just off of the back of a 3 day forum ban, where my page views fell by about 200 per day...... but I was still getting around 850 per day.
   
   The only traffic worth worrying about is search engine traffic. Dont come to conclusions without reading hubs on the topic of keywords and SEO. Drawing conclusions without self-education is dangerous.
   
   I know that I am being blunt, but this statement was just silly.

   Good post Marisa, i am new to HubPages and this is my first time on the forum. I am amazed at how helpful the Hub community seems. I will definitely be sticking around here, there are some very helpful hubs out there.

   WHen I answered, no one else had.  Given the impatience of many of the senior hubbers lately due the the server issue, I figured my response was better than no response.  Artin is only 2 weeks in.  He is a long way from turning the proportion of HP to Google viewers.   If he wants to "feel the love" in the short term, it's going to come from HP. Is this not true?

    Artin, I think you need a little help with understanding the search engines and how they work. The search engines have virtual "robots" that scour the internet looking for new webpages. They find new pages by following links. So, perhaps they go to a website that has a link to your hub. They'll follow it and they find you. The more links you have, the bigger authority on the subject they think you are, the higher you will rank when someone searches, thus more traffic.
    
    Perhaps they come to Hub Pages and try to follow the links there. But there's a problem. If the "robots" find a list of links (like Hub Pages Hottest or Best or Latest) they will only follow a certain amount of those links. The rest get ignored.
    
    I just took a look at your coercion hub and it has no external OR internal links to it that the search engines see -- or at least that Google sees. So they can't find you. And if they can't find you, they can't put you out there when someone searches for an article like yours. Hence, no traffic.
    
    I think you should search the Hubbers on here for Darkside and read some of his very helpful hubs. After that, if you have any questions, let me know.

    I come to the forums purely for fun and hope to make friends. And I learn stuff. If folks fan me, great, if not that's okay. I prefer fans who actually like what I write. I'm still a long way from making any money but I'm having fun.

    I'm so happy that this conversation was started.  I'm brand new to this world as well.  I'm trying slowly to get into it.  I've wanted to write my entire life but never had the balls to do it.  So I have some old rusty stuff coming out and looking at new stuff as well.

    Wow, you all are really helpful and sharing. I am flattered at how many people actually jumped in here and offered advice. I thank you all and I can see if I just relax and let the fingers do the talking, follow the rules. I will be ok. Lots of great advice from all. Thanks again.     Good things come in time. No such thing as overnight success. I've been here five weeks and still on a major learning curve on what is possible with hubpages. It takes time.
