What would have happened if BERNIE had accomplished hijacking Dems instead of Trump hijacking GOP?
And what if Bernie was in office now instead of Trump? He came close to pushing Hillary out - either because of white male misogyny that seems to still be an issue; or because they actually wanted free universal healthcare & college for everyone. Same with Trump voters, some had real reasons to vote for him & some just had spiteful attitudes. How do you think the country would have responded? Personally, because I come from a conservative Christian home, I believed Trump's militant supporters who they said they would have responded with guns if Hillary won. What if Bernie had caused the upset?
Full disclosure: I'm a NeverTrump GOPer. (Free Trade and NATO get a thumbs up from me).
I tend to believe that Bernie's voters agreed with him on the issues as opposed to the misogyny claim. The Bernie Bros love Warren too. HRC was just not likeable. Stiff. Lacking energy. Overconfident staff. Let's be honest: If she had been a bit more energetic, she would have been able to have more rallies in MI and WI that final week. Would have made the difference. Bill implored her staff to get to the Midwest. They tuned him out. Imagine if Bill and Joe Biden had been working rallies in Milwaukee, Madison, or Detroit. Difference maker.
Bernie would have been more accepted by the mainstream media and new media than Trump. So his economic proposals, even if they were in line with Trump's, would be seen as "fighting for American jobs," as opposed to xenophobic and wacky. I'm not defending Trump, but this happens to all Republicans. I'm used to it. Then the healthcare and his "free college" proposals would have been celebrated. No doubt about it.
The reaction of Trump supporters to a Bernie win would have been mixed. Many agree with him on issues. Certainly, I don't believe violence would have broken out.
Although I would never have voted for Bernie, his election would have at least spared us Trump's ridiculous Wall and uneducated foreign policy platforms.
You're going to get some very interesting answers. Hopefully some of the usual suspects will chime in as well. Should be fun.
Agreed, should be fun. I'm hoping discussion from a harmless angle on the election will inspire different responses than the fighting. Hillary could have campaigned differently. Misogyny was also prevelant. White men made SURE she didn't win.
well, i'll bet we'll see in 2020. "ladiez and gentlemen, in this corner...." thats what everybody seemed to want.but bernie was never vetted, by either side. he got to point, no one bothered to point back. and theres plenty pointable stuff there. and hypocricy. and, as a dem, i would have voted holding my nose. and now, to see he and warren approve carson for hud.....i'm like, huh? nope, and jane "wheres the tax returns"saying "this is bernies revolution"...it was a womens march. you know, to honor the woman who lost. eh, whatever. now we see these pipsqueaks, who were in diapers when hillary was fighting for womens rights, act like they invented the movement. and michael moore, who said so condescendingly, "love and kindness are good, right"? none of them have mentioned putin, nor said a word about gun violence. if the alt left poor white man takes over the dems, im out. just my feelings on the matter.
Thats why I don't commit to either side. I'm not sure I could vote 4 Bernie - the same way many GOPers had a hard time voting 4 Trump. Obama hijacked the Dems similarly (but with more support) in 2008. 3rd term for people's pick. Does GOV hear?
Good arguments so far from each of you ladies, a dem and a conservative Christian. I believe that if Bernie had hijacked the election, there would have been more gridlock in Washington. Sure, a free higher education and free health care for all sounds good on paper, and I would have liked to have been the beneficiary of such when I was younger, but they cost mucho grande, and this country would not have been able to pay for such high ambitions. Point is, Bernie wanted to move us into a welfare state that only the young "gimmees" supported. Those of us old enough to foot the bill would not have been able to. There was about to be a generational war between the young "gimmees" who want their welfare BEFORE they pay into society and the Boomers who have now earned their right to social security.
We also can't afford the open-door policy advocated by the more liberal dems. (I am a middle of the roader dem who was taught fiscal conservancy by a middle of the roader dem father, and I guess that puts me in a certain age category because now all dems are purported to be "leeabruls". Tain't so.) One of the reasons that Bill Clinton was so popular was because, and I heard some people say this, he was more conservative than some Republicans. Other than the fact that President Clinton put the brakes on perennial welfare recipients and that he balanced both the State budget as Gov. and the federal budget, can't prove it by me, so don't ask me to.
Misogynist Trump could not stomach the idea of being bested by a woman. I'm not sure how he would have reacted had Bernie won, but if I were a betting woman, I would bet he would goad his supporters in a similar manner.
That is the thing I keep trying to get across to people - just bcuz we voted for Obama, doesn't mean we're all raging liberals. I've always voted on both sides of the isle (Reagan, Bush1) & so do many other people. Labels have been really harmful
i can never vote repub, because of their stand on abortion.but i could leave dems...dont want to.im a kennedy dem.and so was obama,is hillary."affordable, not free".but if its not affordable, make it so! make profits on luxury items, not neccessities!
I've thought about this once or twice - having voted for Dems in the past, Bernie's policies just did not mesh with where I wanted this country to go. Frankly, I LIKE the uber-strange, bipartisan politicians, much more because they TRY to include the opposing side. I'm not so stupid to think that my views are always the right ones. Obama was a good bipartisan politician (although he gets dinged for compromising too much).
I don't know why diversity is such a scary thing to the right-wing; nor why everything has to be 'only their way'. They improved a few of Obama's policies while he was in office, like Obamacare. It isn't remotely what Dems originally wanted; and utilizing existing insurance companies instead of creating a big federal one was a great idea that GOP reps came up with. It just needs to still be tampered with & fixed, not ditched. It sounds like they are going to create their own version, anyway. The only reason I can see to do that is to get rid of the name Obamacare - which they invented, LoL!
I think we would be in a similar place if Bernie had won, but it would probably be more like Obama's first transition - with the right protesting, but eventually settling down - simply because Bernie has a better disposition than Trump and doesn't ENJOY insulting & offending people. Trump obviously gets off on it. He seems to have a YUGE ego; and responds like a child every single time that ego gets bruised.
We'll see how good of a president he makes. I wish I was more optimistic, but I do believe that he does have the potential to be a good president if he can get a grip on the big picture & get himself a decent people person (Conway isn't it) to help him smooth over changes. Then, all we have to do is wait four years.
I've voted for people the 2nd time that I didn't vote for the 1st time - Clinton. If Trump can bring more unity, become a little more bipartisan and actually do a good job - I just might vote for him next time. I'm not holding my breath, ha!
well, theyre planning it, thats for sure. i heard hugh hewitt on npr...wrote a book, the 4th way. says they can have total gop rule for decades to come. karl roves "permanent majority". bye bye rights. hello poverty.
GOP are firm believers in money trickling down economic divides. I think they are as delusional as they think Dems are: neither Dems nor GOP majority voted Obama or Trump into office. GOP don't have enough people anymore & Dem voters are split.
which is why they rely on redistricting, voter suppression, purging voter rolls, everything and anything to prevent people from voting. its a sad state of affairs...and unamerican AS HELL!
Agreed. We really need at least one new big political party to compete & let the other two fall into the dust. Its the 21st Century & most people don't think the same way about things, anymore. Our 'new' country is growing up. *sniff*

This is just over the top! .. are they going to get away with it in NV? Unbelievable...right where everyone can see for themselves. Listen to the voices on the video saying...“They’re letting them into the caucus right now without registering them,” “They’re going to do the count. They’re all...

Politics are exciting to watch, it always fascinated me as to who the voter selects for their candidate and why. There has been a trend over the last 5 or 6 years of populist movements either to right in the case of the GOP or to left, in the case of the Democrats that defy the wisdom of their...
