   What happened to Emma Lazarus’s “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses …”?
   
   I did not think I would live to see the day when people would flee from hatred and persecution in America – again. The Underground Railroad brought slaves to freedom in Canada in the 19th century. Now, I see desperate people crossing into Canada on foot in sub-zero temperatures to be picked up by smiling Mounties, to escape what they see as a doomed future in the United States,. Some have lost fingers to frostbite. This is such a sad spectacle to be watching. What happened to Ronald Reagan’s “Shining city upon a hill?”

   Thank you for addressing this issue. I brought this up in a question. Made the mistake of comparing it to the USA and asking what Canada should do, Built a wall? I was told that my question was irrelevant by an American. Some seem think that only the issues they are conserned about matter. I feel for these people, running scared and I for one are glad Canada treats them as individuals and will consider them on an individual basis and not as a group. I am concerned about what is happening to humanity.

      It's a good thing most are not. My family many generations ago immigrated to Canada from Germany. If more people looked at their history I think they'd be surprised where they came from. My own sister is from the USA.

   When I went to do a computer system installation at Ontario Hydro in Toronto. It was an 8 week installation. I had to get a Canadian SS card, and my company had to have their Canadian subsidiary to pay me. My friend in NY met a man that lived in Canada. The process for her to move up to Canada took a lot of time and money. Lawyers. They were married but that didn't help. And then when they decided to move back to NY, they had the same problem in reverse.
   
   After immigrating legally and being able to use the National Health Service, she had a medical problem and had to come to the US to get it done in less than a year. Her Canadian husband had to wait in the Canadian health system for 2 years to get his knee operations. His knees went bad because of his work requiring a lot at his electrician job.
   
   My point is that the Canadian legal immigration process is very costly and time consuming. But you want the refugees to come in the millions, unvetted and without any commitment to assimilate. And unlike the legal immigrants from the 1900s they were just given entry into the country, but only after vetting. Many were turned away. Those in the country had to fight and claw their way to survive.
   
   These refugees from the Middle East cannot even wait 90 days. And you seem to forget it is temporary.
   
   Canada would be destitute if it didn't have all those oil reserves, so like the Middle East countries, Canada shares the wealth of oil.
   
   So far Canada hasn't had terrorist attacks, or a 911. And these weren't prevalent when that Statue was gifted to the US from France.

      Why are people more concerned with foreigners that don't really assimilate into the country? We have over 40 million Americans on food stamps and the middle class is not employed enough to live with out this aid. There are million of homeless, jobles

   At what point can the US say it is full up? There are tens of millions on welfare and not on the employment roles. It is unfair to them to say "we aren't taking care of you, but we'll take great care of the newcomers who get priority for housing, medical care, new stuff".
   It is unfair to those in need here to take in newcomers and help THEM but not take care of our own. And the truth is with the attention and resources going to the exotic foreigners, we still won't take care of them.
   And those are the dispossessed who voted for Trump, because the liberals have ignored them or demonized them for years.

   As the granddaughter of four immigrants, I don't get it, either. My maternal grandmother opened her own Italian grocery store in New York. My paternal grandfather found work as a roofer. Not one of their children failed to graduate from high school. The majority of the boys served in the military. Same in my generation, where most of us have college degrees. At least three of us were teachers at some point. At least two of us have written books.
   
   The idea that immigrants come to this country to take jobs and suck services just isn't so. I see it in my current neighborhood, in Texas, of all places, where many of the new businesses are small stores catering to the needs of people who have immigrated. We have excellent Indian and Mediterranean restaurants, a noodle shop, an African grocer, a Korean church, and not one, but two Tongan churches. The checkers at my local Walmart come from all over the world.
   
   My grandparents came from three different countries. The one thing all four of them had in common was that they loved America. They made generations of hardworking citizens. That's always been the reality if immigration.

   Its unfortunate, the majority of this is caused by a hyperbolic and hysterical media that is doing everything within its power to stir up the people against Trump.
   
   The truth is, while he is far more vocal and divisive in the matter of immigration and enforcement, he is doing nothing more than what occurred during the Obama Administration...
   
   What is different is how the media is covering it, how the media (and opposing politicians) is making everything seem as awful as possible (often stretching or fabricating the facts) look at how it twisted what he said the other night when he stated 'what happened in Sweeden last night'...
   
   Some of them said he referred to a terrorist attack that never happened, some tried to say Sweden has no problems and he must be crazy even bringing it up... but the truth is easy enough to find out about, and no country in the world is suffering worse hardships for their immigration policies than Sweden... a nation that will never recover for its ignorance, kind hearted and helpful a nation as they tried to be, they will now suffer a generation of escalating violence and terror which until now never existed in their nation.
