    What is a true Christian?

I am discouraged by the number of fake Christians I have known. They attend church on Sundays, read the Bible and even wear crosses around their necks. But they:

    1. Own expensive cars and homes.
    2. Give little to charity.
    3. Rarely donate their time
    4. Look down their noses at the "lazy" poor.
    5. Act immorally for the sake of money, status and power.
    6. Vote for politicians who enrich their supporters and oppose programs for people in need.

What is your definition of a true Christian?

It's not your place to judge others.  God is the one who is judging them. I'm sure you are not as pure in God's eyes as you believe or would like to believe.  Do you know what hypocrite means?

    Matthew

7 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Sorry, Corinth 9:12 has nothing to do with judging others.  My point is there are no perfect Christians. Can't say, if you don't do what I think is right you're not Christian.  Not right. Romans 3: 10 to 19

Mike, I agree there are no perfect Christians. No one is pure including me. But if God gave us the ability to judge, and Christ asked us to live a certain way, then we learn what it means to be a Christian in part by judging --  ourselves and others.

Scott, we agree. I get tired of Christians saying who is and is not Christian. I had a Baptist tell me Catholics weren't Christian. The list goes on. I believe evil wants us fighting with one another. If I see something bad I say God has this.

Your scripture is not theological at all.  We are to judge be vigilant and do it constantly. The word judge there means to "be critical. So read it like this " Do not criticize and condemn others, so that you may not be criticized and condemed"

We certainly are not fit to to do the Heavenly Father's work based on Jas 4:12 There is only one who is Lawgiver and Judge,

My definition of a true Christian is anyone who attempts to following the teachings of Christ. However it's important to remember: Ecclesiastes 7:20
"For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not."
I don't believe there is anything wrong with being a rich prosperous Christian.
Many verses in the bible encourage believers to ask God for anything they want, need, or desire.
    Mark 11:24
"What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."
Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it shall be given you"
Psalm 23:5  "my cup runneth over."
Matthew 25:14-30 The parable about the servants and talents.
"I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine."
"Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury." Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath (ten talents).
30 "And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness:.."
I agree with you that there are some rich people who worship money. Nevertheless there are lots of poor/average people who are selfish, arrogant, and judgmental in their own right.
There are also billionaires like Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg who pledged to give away 90% of their wealth to various charitable causes. Many rich people also have foundations and donate money or give scholarships to poor students.
Ultimately I believe wealth simply makes one more of what they already were. smile

It's not the 'money' but the 'love of money' that condemns us(ITm6:10)!

    1. God doesn't mandate socialism. In fact, the opposite. When the state controls a lot, it seeks to shut down alternative centers of influence and organization. This is why totalitarian regimes either take over or shut down the churches.
    2. The Bible condemns love of money, not money. Look at how many patriarchs were held up as examples of how to live and had large families, large flocks, wealth. To have an expensive home is not in and of itself a violation of Christianity.
    3. The Democrat party may claim to be the party of morality, tolerance, peace, smart people - but that is good branding on their part and lazy moralizing by those who say "I'm Democrat, that makes me moral!"
    4. There are poor who are in those circumstances through their bad choices, and the worst part about the current welfare state is that it increases their numbers through deliberate undermining of the family (no benefits if you marry the father) and keeping people trapped in poverty. In this case, just throwing more money at the programs leads to more broken families, more violence in the inner cities from illegitimate children, more people stuck dependent on the state. Thus it is a Christian directive to condemn government programs that are clearly doing harm and support private charity instead.
    5. The refusal of the left to vet those on charity for drug abuse and refusal to work leads to the misconception that this is the majority. When you say it is worse than 1 person be refused welfare than 100 abuse it, of course taxpayers resent it and assume the worse.

Socialism, in its purest form, is about people working together as a society to ensure that the fruits of their labours are distributed in a fair and just way so that nobody suffers. That is also the essence of Christianity.

promisemposted 6 years agoin reply to this

I agree, John. Taken too far, it also can weaken individual responsibility in some people. So it seems that a combination of the best parts of socialism with the best parts of capitalism can serve Christianity and society at the same time.

I have heard that question asked a number of times, in various ways the past few weeks. It has involved topics ranging from gay marriage, to is there a hell, to issues surrounding justice and the poor, or other religions, to unfortunately, the gut wrenching events in Connecticut. At the risk of being accused of dodging the question, I would say that before you can get to these issues, you have to start at the heart of what Christ’s followers have taught from the very beginning. Love the poor, sick and suffering ... the despised and cast out. “The least of these,” Jesus called them. “What you do for the least of these, you do for me,” He said. These are the ones Jesus loves.

A true Christian puts God first in everything and claims Jesus is their Lord and Savior. A true Christian is humble, peaceful, wise and a warrior. These things are that of Christ. Having big houses and cars should not claim a false Christian - although yes there are some. But if they are blessed by God - who is not a God of little- then we should be proud of their blessing. The bible says "I will open the windows of heaven and bless you in abundance"....
The key is being 100% firm in your faith no matter the problems that happen. And believe that all is in God's time. He's not a magician, but He is the one to live by.

A false Christian will be judged as did the ones who crucified Jesus.

There is no good answer to this question... but it is my belief that a REAL Christian wouldn't look down their noses at people whose beliefs differ from their own, and they would not judge someone for practicing their belief in God in a different manner. I have met many Christians who look down on me personally for my tattoos and my piercings; however the best Christian I know does not. Due to her beliefs she does not judge anyone by their appearances, or their choices simply because she states it is not her place to judge her neighbors, it is the place of God himself.

Everyone has flaws.  It's easy to judge Christians and say that because they do not do this or that they are not Christians.  The important thing about Christianity is have you accepted Jesus Christ into your heart, believe that he died on the cross and saved you from your sins.  I do agree with you on some points, but no one is ever going to be able to be perfect just because they believe in God.  Everyone is at different points in their spirituality.

The word Christian means to be christ like.. To follow Jesus steps as closely as possible.
Example you can draw a picture or you can trace a picture .which ever you chose you want to copy the picture to every detail.
There are real genuine people that Jesus would be very proud of that reflect his love and concerns for fellow humans and the opportunity to live in a trouble free world.
Jesus paid the price for many to keep living and enjoy the real paradise soon to come.

A true Christian is one who has given their life totally unto the Lord.  And has    separated themselves from the things of the world. Which means they don't have a sinful  nature anymore. Because they are filled with the Holy Spirit to give them spiritual guidance and to protect from the enemy, Satan.  And their job now is to bring others into the knowledge of God's son Jesus Christ.

I am a Christian. I struggle with doing wrong things all the time. I often catch myself thinking that I am better than others, thinking more about money than I should and sometimes I probably look worse than people who aren't even Christians.

I am so blessed that God loves me and is big enough to take on my big mess. He is working in me, but it isn't happening all at once. I thank God, because I know that without Him I would be MUCH worse than what I am now.

The truth is that I will never be perfect. That is why I need Jesus. He stood in the gap. I often pray to say that I am so sorry for messing everything up and I hear that He will be the perfect one in our relationship. Messing up often teaches me to lean on God, because we still have this thing I call 'flesh'. Flesh is the bad person inside of me that just won't stop. I believe that God uses broken vessels to carry His light, because if the vessels were perfect; than people would focus on the person instead of what is inside.

A true Christian is one who puts their faith in,  or believes  in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  It is not only a poor person nor a rich person- but can be either. According to the Bible we will know believers by their fruits - or the things we see them doing. Also, according to the Bible it is not our place to judge - judgment belongs to the Lord.

A true Christian is not a perfect person- they are a work in progress. I am not in the same place I was ten years ago and I have a lot to learn for the remainder of my years.

A true Christian can be rich or poor. The small giving of a poor person is valued by the Lord, as much as a large giving of a rich person- neither should be flaunted. Many poor people have given much time to further the Kingdom, as have many rich people invested in furthering the Kingdom.

I could spend more time on this but due to time constraints will stop here...to me though your post sounds like a non-christian judging less then perfect people....if this is not true then please show me why?

You are correct, there has been exhaustive studies on this phenomenon. Christianity over the last 200 years has grown as if it is a million miles long but it has the substance of a hair thin.

Each of the eledge Christian is important to our nation’s future because they include millions of American citizens. The Casual Christian is especially significant because it represents a huge majority of the nation’s population – two out of every three adults. This particular tribe is comprised of significant proportions of minimally active born again Christians and moderately active but theologically nominal Christians. If a catalyst were added to this mix to deepen this tribe’s integration of faith and lifestyle, or even to simply create a more extensive sense of community and purpose within the tribe, unprecedented changes could occur.8

The findings reveal that most self-identified Christians in the U.S. are characterized by having the attitudes and actions researchers identified as Pharisaical. Just over half of the nation’s Christians—using the broadest definition of those who call themselves Christians—qualify for this category (51%). They tend to have attitudes and actions that are characterized by self-righteousness.

On the other end of the spectrum, 14% of today’s self-identified Christians—just one out of every seven Christians—seem to represent the actions and attitudes Barna researchers found to be consistent with those of Jesus.

In the middle are those who have some mix of action and attitude. About one-fifth of Christians are Christ-like in attitude, but often represent Pharisaical actions (21%). Another 14% of respondents tend to be defined as Christ-like in action, but seem to be motivated by self-righteous or hypocritical attitudes.9

Pharisaical Christians will debate, hate and argue your views. If you're curious about Authentic Christianity find that 16%.

The truth is being a Christian is about relationship with God through the Holy Spirit and cannot be achieved by trying harder, buckling down, reading the Bible more, going to church more or any of these. What many don't understand is that the flesh is weak, in the heart is deceitful beyond all things for who can understand it. So the only way to be a quote true Christian is 2 have the supernatural presence of God living inside of you in relationship through the Holy Spirit.

The answer to this is simple....someone that has accepted Jesus Christ into their heart as their personal savior. Any other answer would be not biblical in that the reasoning behind it would need judgement, something deemed non-Christian to participate in. We as people do not hold the capability to deem someone as Christian. Would you define a Christian as someone who is not greedy, someone who does no harm, or someone who follows the path of the righteous? As a human who are we to define what is greed because maybe someone is giving all they can give but to an outside eye it looks as though they are not, that is judgement. Who are we to define what is harm whenever an event could be defined as merely an eye for an eye. Most importantly who are we to say which path is that of righteousness whenever the righteous path has been defined by God. It is within our own heart that we answer what is a true Christian for if it is full of the Lord if you are saved and you should always follow your heart. Doing so leads you down the path of righteousness and hopefully demonstrating Christian-like behavior in the Lord's name.

    Hi Scott,

All you said about today's christianity are true, but there is one point I'll like to comment on. It is never a seen for christians to own wealth or riches. Its not a sin toown many houses or cars, where it become sin is if they worship those riches, show pride in them, be occupied in just the things of the world and things that made them get or keep those riches, and also if they don't serve God with it and help the needy. But it is un easy to see christians doing all I just mentioned these days.

Hi, Daniel. Great point. I agree it's not a sin to have wealth.

I believe it's hypocritical for someone to pursue wealth over everything else, destroy people's careers to gain power and attend church on Sunday to put on an act of being righteous.

That is a good question, and a concern for the church from the beginning days of Corinth and Ephesus when women would compete to wear the finest clothes to impress others (1 Tim 2:9). Don't be discouraged, however, because it was going on during the writing of the New Testament, we actually have scripture that can help us deal with it. First though, I would make sure that we do not step across the line from correcting someone's inappropriate action, and judging them for a way we don't think they should act. As a Christian we are to love our Lord with all of our heart (Mt 22:37). That is what sets us apart from "nice people", other religions, and those that aren't truly Christian. When we love Jesus with all we have, we will obey His Commandments (Jn 14:15). Religion is what blinds many from a loving relationship with Jesus. Religion holds people down as if they were in chains, and continually lies to them that they need to try harder or do more. They have been deceived. We must show them love, and gracefully direct them to a true relationship with Jesus (Gal 6:1), because that is what a real Christian is; someone in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

We are not to judge the person, rather the sin. Slight difference but very important. If we judge the sin we can still love the person, but judging and loving the person at the same time would be difficult if not impossible. Mt 18:15-17

As a former right-wing conservative Christian - now enlightened - I have a rare perspective. A 'true' Christian is one who craves the truth about Jesus Christ to the extent that they are willing to do the research and adjust the harmful beliefs that have been fed to them, accordingly.

It is someone who cannot STAND the lies that swirl around about him to repel so many people from the true essense of his messages. It is why so many Christians can't handle their 'sin nature' to act the way you have described above, so often...

The problem with Christianity is that there are so many different variations - and they all view themselves as being THE right one. Every single one of them will go on & on, quoting verses from The Bible to 'prove' how THEY are right. For example, Eric and Kiss & Tales (below) always have clashing views - one is a Christian, the other is a Jehovah's Witness. Both embrace 'Christ' within the view of their religion - and neither agrees with the other, aside from a few commonalities. Its the same with Catholics & Baptists or Baptists & the holy-roller/charasmatic denomenations like Assembly of God Christians.

Why do these differences exist? Because they are all trying to explain 'holes' within basic Christian concepts that don't make sense. Most current Christian beliefs are not even CLOSE to the original teachings of Jesus Christ; but erroneous dogmas are what is forced onto the world - despite the fact that they have been debunked over & over again throughout history - especially the 'salvation message'.

Christ had a really valuable 'original' message for this world. Not seeking it out, denying it and/or continuing to proliferate harmful lies is the equivelant of spitting in Jesus' face like the guards who crucified him did. On top of that, it inspires Christians to embrace erroneous beliefs about themselves (and everyone else around them); along with completely misunderstanding 'sin' and the purpose of it within the reality of our existence.

If religious people across the globe would get their religions into perspective (not just Christianity) - our world could heal. Until then, we will continue to hurt & kill each other over the most ridiculous things. I invite everyone who is curious about the new/old perspective of Christian beliefs that are coming to light in this day & age to read through my 1st spotlight article for more information. It is a good, generic place to begin researching this very controversial topic.

going to "church" has nothing to do with following Christ.
Any answer to this question that does not include Repenting and SUBMITTING  to Christ is not a valid answer.    Unfortunately what is today called christianity is a religion of men 99% of the time.    Though Christianity should mean followers of Christ , today it usually means followers of certain men, which are false religions.   So much of what is called christianity has been corrupted that it has destroyed the valid use of the term that is why many do not wish to called by it and prefer to be called what they actually are, disciples of Christ.   True disciples of Christ obey all of His commands and fulfill ALL of the requirements of the name, christians (churchians is the correct name) do not, they pick and choose which doctrines they prefer, not whether they are correct.   BiG DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO
Since the bible and our experiences show us that we cannot look to men to learn truth about following Christ, we can only find that through communion with the Holy Spirit.
True Followers of Christ understand that they are to test EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE against scripture by the Holy Spirit not against fallible men.
AND MOST importantly they understand that true followers  of Christ DO NOT GO TO "CHURCH" THEY ARE THE CHURCH.
True disciples are baptized in (filled with) the Holt Spirit and understand that HE is the ONLY source or truth so they take everything they read, hear and think to Him to find if it be of God and if it is not they reject it for what it is- false doctrine.   You will not learn to do this IN "church", you learn this by studying scripture for yourself with the aid of the Holy Spirit, there is no other way to truth.

    3. Aspire to be the hands and feet of our Lord Jesus Christ, to act as He would in a broken world.
    4. Christians should humble themselves before God almighty that He be glorified and exalted. As we exalt self or the world we are humbled.
