Why do so many people choose to lie to their children about Santa?

This is where "Christians" and the rest of the population are similar, they all lie to their children about Santa and that seems dangerous! Jesus Christ hates lies, so why do people do it on His so-called birthday?

People teach and deceive their children about Santa Claus and other mythical characters like the Easter Bunny and the like, because that's all they know. They, the parents, were taught those myths when they were growing up and no doubt they feel obligated to teach their children the same.

In essence, a lie or falsehood is being passed on from generation to generation. The Bible doesn't sanction falsehoods or mythical characters that promote the interests of greedy commercialism.

True Christians don't celebrate worldly holidays. Jesus Christ never commanded his followers to celebrate his birthday which IS NOT on December 25. There is no mention of Santa Claus in the Bible. However, if you rearrange the letters in Santa, the  title Satan comes up. Think about it.

You mean like mythical characters like gods from another universe, demons and a devil from the same place?  People 3 days dead that walk the streets?  Angels blowing horns?  Talking snakes and mythical gardens where no one ever dies?  People constructed from the rib of another person?

Myths like these, passed on from generation to generation, that are used to fill the coffers of the biggest industry in the world?  smile

To me it's more like playing along with her imagination.  I never explicitly told her Santa was real, she picked up on it and I'm playing along.  If she outright asks me if Santa is real I'll tell her the truth.  Until then I see it as indulging in a little Christmas magic.  My parents did the Santa thing with me when I was little and while I was disappointed to find out he wasn't real, I wasn't angry with them and I didn't feel like they had lied to me to hurt me.  I also look back very fondly on the whole thing and I'm glad I did get to believe in Santa for a while.  I've always trusted my mom with my whole heart, her doing Santa with me has not hindered that in the slightest.

I think it's because we live in a culture where fun and tradition trumps truth. It certainly is a creative challenge to find better more truthful ways and design traditions that compliment the truth rather than distract from it. Creativity isn't the only challenge in moving in this direction. This kind of a decision may come with much resistance from well meaning loved ones who really enjoy those traditions whether they are truthful or not.

maybe for the same reason  why people like you spread the lie that there is a "rapture" though it is contrary to scripture .  God has NEVER AND NEVER WILL taken HIS people out of the mire, HE ALWAYS TAKES THEM THROUGH IT.    See Goshen, and Noah and esp Noah as scripture says it will be like in the day of Noah, WHEN THE UN RIGHTEOUS WERE REMOVED FROM THE EARTH.   THE RIGHTEOUS INHERIT THE EARTH, GOING NO WHERE and being changed in an instant when the earth is replace by the new heaven and earth.
both are lies that discredit those promoting them

It really depends on people's perception: if you have judged Santa to be a bad lie, then he is. If you've judged him to be a childhood fairytale that can enrich lives, he is. 'Truth' & our response to it is as relative as anything, like religions

People want their children to enjoy their childhoods!
They look for ways to create beautiful memories for them and encourage their imaginations. No one wants a child who is zombie to Fox News or CNN.
In fact some people believe God is Santa Claus for adults!
The concept is similar he knows when you are sleeping, he knows when you're awake, he knows if you've been bad or good...etc" Therefore be good to avoid hell and get into heaven!
As you noted about Jesus: "His so-called birthday..."
December 25th was "assigned" as the day to celebrate his birth.
For the first three hundred years of the church's existence, birthdays were not given much emphasis--not even the birth of Christ. Christ's baptism received more attention than his birthday in the {January 6th feast of Epiphany}.
No one knows for sure on what day Christ was born!
Other traditions gave dates as early as mid-November or as late as March. So how did we settle upon December 25th?
Cultures around the Mediterranean and across Europe observed feasts on or around December 25th, marking {the winter solstice}. The Jews had a festival of lights. Germans had a yule festival.
Celtic legends connected the solstice with Balder, the Scandinavian sun god who was struck down by a mistletoe arrow. At the pagan festival of Saturnalia, Romans feasted and gave gifts to the poor.
Drinking was closely connected with these pagan feasts.
At some point, a Christian bishop may have adopted the day to keep his people from indulging in the old pagan festival.
Essentially the celebration of Christmas was piggybacked onto the pagan festivals celebrated on or around December 25th.
Based upon your statement Jesus would hate the fact that people are lying about the (actual date) of his birth!
However only "Debbie Downers" care about such details.
These are usually miserable cynical unhappy people who are on a mission to steal the joy out of living by always looking to put a negative stamp on everything.

Why didn't you say "MOST" lie to their children about Santa....?"

My three year old granddaughter came into my room and said "They (her other cousins) are in the den teasing me because I said Santa IS real and then asked "Is he?"  I told her TRUTH!  I asked again tonight and she said "I know he's real; I just know he is!"  I am allowing her to enjoy her childhood!  She will grow into TRUTH!  I guess that's why GOD said "until each come into "UNDERSTANDING" (You guys included concerning "SPIRITUAL" things) in Ephesians 1:18!

We all have to "mature" both physically and spiritually and the only way we will is one continue to remind one of TRUTH~!  Why do you think I continue to "bug" everyone with HIS WORD?  If I continue to remind all, MAYBE one day you will pick up Scripture and "Study" and your "understanding" will increase with GOD'S HELP!

Concerning HIS "so-called birthday," according to Scripture, it doesn't matter if the world designates April Fool's Day as the date of Christ's birth, if all consider HIS birthday as "an holy day," (and Christians do), then you need to be reminded what GOD SAID.  Colossians 2:16 says "Let therefore no man judge you....of an holy day...!"  Therefore, since Christians consider the birth of Christ "an holy day;" you JUDGE!

Really!  EVERYDAY should be 'an holy day' (including "The Sabbath") IF "IN" CHRIST!

Again, "Spiritual" maturity is my prayer for ALL!

Ephesians 1:16-18 "...making mention of you in my prayers; That the GOD of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of "GLORY," may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the KNOWLEDGE of him:  The eyes of your UNDERSTANDING being enlightened; that ye may know what is the HOPE of his calling, and what the riches of the "GLORY" of his inheritance in the saints."

    Merry Christmas ALL!
And remember:  JESUS is the REASON for the SEASON!

    I pray!

    Blessings

http://hub.me/ajZ4M This is JOY>>>  The joy of the Lord is the gladness of heart that comes from knowing God, abiding in Christ, and being filled with the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus was born, the angels announced “good tidings of great joy” (Luke 2:10). All who find Jesus know, with the shepherds of the nativity, the joy He brings. Even before His birth, Jesus had brought joy, as attested to in Mary’s song (Luke 1:47) and by John’s response to hearing Mary’s voice as he “leaped for joy” in his mother’s womb (Luke 1:44).

Jesus exemplified joy in His ministry. He was no glum ascetic; rather, His enemies accused Him of being too joyful on occasion (Luke 7:34). Jesus described Himself as bridegroom enjoying a wedding feast (Mark 2:18–20); He “rejoiced in the Holy Spirit” (Luke 10:21); He spoke of “my joy” (John 15:11) and promised to give His disciples a lifetime supply of it (John 16:24). Joy is reflected in many of Jesus’ parables, including the three stories in Luke 15, which mention “rejoicing in the presence of the angels” (Luke 15:10) and end with a joyful shepherd, a joyful woman, and a joyful father.

Nehemiah told the repentant Israelite s that the joy of the Lord would be their strength (Nehemiah 8:10). The early church was characterized by gladness and the joy of the Lord (Acts 2:46; 13:52), and “joy in the Holy Spirit” is a distinguishing mark of the kingdom of God (Romans 14:17). Those who are part of the kingdom share in the kingdom’s delight.

Joy is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). In fact, it is our Christian duty to rejoice in the Lord (Philippians 3:1; 4:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:16). In Christ, the believer is “filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter 1:8).

    1. profile image50
Norine Williamsposted 7 years agoin reply to this

Yes "JOY!"  EVERYDAY is "Christmas" ("JOY") IF "IN" Christ Jesus!  EVERYDAY is The Sabbath ("rest") IF "IN" Christ Jesus! "Let us LABOR therefore to enter into THAT "rest"..." (Heb4:11) in HIS PROMISES; therefore EVERYDAY is The Sabbath IF we "rest"

Because they are children, and children should get to enjoy their childhood.  I told my children all along that he was a spirit - how else could he be everywhere in the world on one night?  (Not to mention in every shopping mall and on TV at the same time.) So there was never some big shock.  They believed when they were little and they believe now.  Problem solved.

wrenchBiscuit Rebukes Santa Claus, Beelzebub, and the Nephilim

It makes a lot of people angry, but the truth is, people lie because they simply are not very smart.

    • These are the same people who will tell themselves that they are living in a democracy, when anyone with an 8th grade education can understand that the United States has always been an oligarchy.

    • They believe that their sons and daughters who die, and who are disabled in war are heroes, when in truth they are pawns and victims of a wealthy ruling elite.

    • They believe that the United States is a great melting pot that welcomes all races. But the truth is, the United States was created by white Europeans ... for white Europeans.

    • They believe that people who go to church are good people. But good people do not participate in the buying and selling of land and resources that were stolen from the Indigenous, after over 100 million were murdered by the Invaders. Good people would not build homes and churches upon the bones of my ancestors.

    • They believe that there is equal opportunity in the United States. But in truth, the descendants of African slaves are still owed over 400 years in back wages. Apparently, many feel that white America should get a free ride. However, no one has ever explained why. Nor can they explain when America was ever great.

    • They refer to the creatures who fathered the Nephilim as the "sons of God", when in truth such sexual intermingling between humans and higher life forms is nothing less than bestiality. Thus, the Nephalim are an abomination fathered by the sons of Beelzebub.

    • They also believe that capitalism is the best economic model, when in truth capitalism creates poverty, and in fact, cannot exist without an underclass.

These are just a few of the lies they tell themselves and their children. It is no wonder that the Santa Claus myth is so popular. This is why I admonish young people not to follow in the footsteps of whistle-blowers like Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning; not because these two very brave and heroic individuals were wrong to do what they did, but only because people who teach their children to believe in Santa Claus simply aren't worth the sacrifice. I would never stick my neck out for the jolly St. Nick crowd. And if I saw a slow train coming with a nuclear warhead attached, I would either tell them that it was Santa's helpers coming to shower them with gifts, or I would go fishing and hope for the best.

Fantasy is an important part of childhood, and to deny them that aspect of learning about the world is surely a huge mistake.     I think the Biblical answer to your question is to:  Judge not;
Lest you be judged.  How parents opt to teach their children about Santa and Christmas giving should be their choice, and if you want to fault them for doing so, you are guilty of passing judgement on them which is clearly a sin.

I guess I understand what you mean, but I would not consider this a lie.  If it was considered a lie it would be an innocent one.  One thing to think about - Santa Clause creates hope, and is inspirational in a way that it makes their children think happy thoughts, (like they believe in miracles).  There is nothing wrong with telling your Kids Santa is real because ultimately, they feel excited and happy.

Its meant to glorify the birth of Christ we can't have a Satan-like figure just pouncing around on the naughty in the stories circling around the family dinner table on Christmas Eve.. there would be some traumatized kids running around at this time.. ehh moral of the story let your child live, he/she doesn't have to grow up so fast, let him/her worry about which gift is going to be opened for midnight first.

Our children deserve to have the pleasure of an innocent dream, especially in these modern times. The picture ( I do not know what era you got the picture from?), you placed in relation to the question, was from a time that we do not live in anymore and with so much horror in the world today, our children certainly have the need to be excited and happy about something that is not destructive or violent (whether it is a lie or not).
People are human and Jesus Christ may hate lies but I am sure that he would not mind, if it means a happy child.

There is something magical about Christmas when you are child.  Santa Claus is part of that magic.  It always was in my childhood. I'm 35 years old and I love the wonderment I see from my children.  My son is too old to believe at this point but that magic lingers.  Everyone has their own belief system and some people apparently consider Santa Claus to be some abhorrent lie that should never be told to children but in my family it simply adds to the joy and again, the magic.  Christmas is my favorite time of year and I owe all of that to my mother.  I was never devastated or angry when I found out that Santa Claus didn't exist.  It was explained to me a long the same lines as someone already said, being a spirit.  The spirit of Christmas.  Santa Claus doesn't just mean a fat old man who gives random gifts to whoever.  He was the complete embodiment of a wonderful, giving time of year and to put others first.  That IS Santa Claus.  The art of giving, no matter how someone embraces that, Santa Claus or otherwise, that is to me, what Christmas should always be about.

We too, celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.  To my family it all went hand and hand and still does to this day.  We have this enormous picture that I've always loved where Santa Claus has removed his hat and is praying over a manger.  Regardless of where the background of Santa Claus originates, for most of us I think he now represents a sign of love, hope, giving, and a new year upon us.

As a Mother of Two kids. I have to say that this question in itself makes me question why you'd ask that and why they'd make Christmas movies and Not call them Holiday Movies Since So many people have issues today with religion. I unlike many people do not have a issue with the holidays cause to me Christmas isn't about a Man in a red suit that gives my kids a cute sparkle in their eyes its not about the presents but its about allowing your children to have dream allowing them to believe in something that may or may not be true and here is some insight for you I want you to go to google and Research Saint Nick there was a Santa clause he was in Germany he went door to door and delivered money to the poor as a Christmas present. I was told this story as a young girl an have done my own research. I don't think anyone should be ashamed of teaching their children to have an imagination or to believe in something. People Believe in the Folk lure Crampus the Demon who kills bad children an adults. That myth put enough fear into some people who were actually dumb enough to believe it. And people who choose not to believe its on them. Your only human an you only live once so why not be free to do an say what you will but as for me I'd rather allow my kids to believe in something that may or may not be real because why should I ruin it.

In part I feel it is because the children are small,as well as when they go to school they hear all their friends talking about Santa and they want to feel included and accepted. The dangerous part about speaking about Santa is the mere fact that we are taking God out and replacing him with a ficticious person.

To make them feel the Christmas season. Another reason is that instead of scaring the children that might cause some traumatic events and issues, they tell the opposite like "Santa won't give you present if you're naughty or "Santa wants you to be nice so he'll give you a gift". I think they want the children to be good and to feel the Christmas vibes without scaring them.

There are many theories that can be answered to this question but it is believed that the character widely known as "Santa Claus" who always wore the colour red and white was actually created by a very famous company, which is Coca-Cola. When browsed using the internet or references from many places, Santa Claus is not as we all always recognise who is a man in red. It is also said that Santa Claus is a distraction from the real meaning of Christmas. What is Christmas? It is the birth of our Father, Jesus Christ and it is mainly the season of giving and forgiving each other, but Santa has been distracting many children that Christmas is only about gifts and presents. Many also suggests that Santa is also Satan, well it could be clearly seen if you messed up spelling the name of a bubbly character, you end up spelling the name of a worst enemy mankind could ever imagine. This might also explain why he enters the homes of children through chimneys, at the middle of the night before the very holy day, the birth of Jesus Christ, but not on that day. If this answer is offensive , I'm sorry.

Santa Claus is not a lie.  Santa is a role, not a person.  When parents provide their kids with Santa they are playing a role for their kid's imagination.  They are giving them the gift of wonder and amazement.  I personally chose not to do Santa Claus for my children but I wouldn't fault those who do it for their kids.  My reason was more financial than anything.

I'm an atheist and I play pretend with my child when it comes to Santa.  But then, I've also played along with the tooth fairy and the cleaning fairy and the man on the moon (we wink up at Neil Armstrong because he's the man in the moon).  We play pretend when it comes to Santa because it's fun; it's about exercising the imagination, celebrating traditions and storytelling. I grew up in a christian family in Australia where Santa was a big thing. Weird, since the idea and history of Santa really has nothing to do with being a christian and the christian side of christmas was often swept under the carpet. For me the concept of 'Santa' is also about being able to give freely without expecting recognition in return.

First of all, parents are not "lying" to their children. Words are funny like that. If you think about it, words have emotions, associations and images attached to them, which is why it feels nice to say "love" and not so nice to say "hate".

Therefore, they are not lying. They are playing make-believe with their children, and this magical game serves many purposes along with other traditional characters like the Tooth Fairy and the Man in the Moon.

    1. This game fills children's hearts and minds with magic, warmth, and excitement. I remember how I felt when opening each door of my advent calendar, the feeling of anticipation mingled with wide-eyed curiosity as I imagined Santa beginning to do his rounds, drawing closer and closer.

    2. It boosts imaginations and teaches children to think beyond the realms of "what you see is what you get". In youth, this quality drives creation for the purpose of fun, in adulthood it serves to help people think outside the box, and to find hope where a closed mind would find none.

    3. It helps to develop a bond between children and parents as they put the cookies and milk out together on Christmas Eve, and put the decorations up, and tell stories. Yes, Christmas has lost its sparkle somewhat due to overmarketing and a renewed focus that makes money and possessions the primary function, but for those of us that were lucky enough to have parents that stoked the magic at these times of year, the spirit remains, and our kids will continue the tradition.

I could go on but I think I'm running out of words hah.

So in summary, it isn't a lie to want your children to believe in magic and in benevolent beings with love in their hearts, it is a gift that keeps on giving, and is certainly more useful than an I-phone or a touchpad which incidentally, has the complete opposite effect.

Oh, the joys of Christmas. I'm 36, and my son is nearly 5. We have so many wonderful Christmases to come! smile

I think it is quite an useful lie told by parents to there children. This lie is taken as a truth by the tiny kids who eventually grow up with a certain amount of love and dedication for Christmas. Just the way elders prepare themselves for Christmas, probably in a traditional way, the children too look forward to this day in anticipation of getting gifts from Santa. Altogether without even realizing, all the generations, irrespective of all religions, celebrate the birth of Christ in fun and frolic.

We are all children of the Christ, the the tiny ones being closer to His heart. And in that case if parents do lie to their children in order to bring a smile on their faces, merciful Jesus shall never curse, rather bless. He is always in search of the happy faces.Thank you for the question .
