Maven Recommended Articles

   Does anyone else find the Maven recommended articles that pop up at the bottom of the hubs you are reading to be totally unrelated to the type of articles you read? For instance I keep getting things like “Sexy 70 Year Old Women, “ “Female Fitness Models and Competitors,” “Are Blacks the Cursed Descendants of Ham?” etc.
   Maybe these are popular articles that get the most traffic and everyone has the same pop ups. I don’t know, but they aren’t even slightly relevant to my reading preferences.

      John, I have no idea how those articles are selected. They have nothing to do with the subject matter of the article(s) I'm reading, nor are they reflective of my Google habits.
      
      They're completely annoying as well. I don't like the new feature at all. Hopefully they won't do well and Maven will abandon them.

         That’s what I meant too Shauna, they are not related To the hub you are reading, or your a Google habits. I wish they were more appropriate or gone.

            I agree with you, John, except that I want them gone. I have a large screen Mac (desk computer), but they appear with half the titles gone so I'm not sure of what most of the articles are about and don't click on them. They are just an annoyance to me.

               I agree MizB. I want them gone too. They cover the end of the article and you have to constantly move or exit the darn things.

                  I just went to read your Pethelpful article about raising chickens. Maven is showing at the bottom a link to bizzarre chicken breeds, chicken names, and two different links to hubs on dog names. (No, the dog names are not that related.)

                     Thanks, Dr Mark. Yes, you are right. It seems that the unrelated ads are on the HubPage articles and not on the niche sites. Those are more relevant. The pop up isn’t so annoying if the topics are related.

      I am so disgusted with the popups, they completely cover the bottom of the article you're reading. I want them gone, never to return. I do not read them, I;m too annoyed,

         Yes, Ruby. I haven’t read of anyone saying that they like the Maven pop ups. Hub Pages are constantly retiring other features..the most recent Q & A, but they are adding unpopular and unsightly stuff like these.

            The Maven popups are fine and in the articles I have looked at are showing related articles. They are probably increasing traffic since they are at the bottom of the article and only show up when someone is scrolling back up through the page.
            I wonder if all of the complaints here are about articles on Hubpages. When the bar shows up on a niche site page, it only shows related articles on that niche site. Although I am sure you would disagree (I still remember the problem with HP asking you to mess with your scrambled egg hub) I would think that the people that do not like this would look on this as another good reason to move their articles off of HP main site and onto the appropriate niche site.

            Johan, the best thing HP should do is to modify the existing features, and add new buttons. If a pop-up is not liken, is they not another? Had sexy at 70 popup on my screen I would jump at it at once. It is a subject of research I am interested in. Many thanks.

      You have my vote for HP to eliminate them; HP may not have much to say about them, though. I'm observing a similar scenario on YouTube--more and more pop-ups. I do use Adblock Plus there.
      
      There seems to be a cultural trend for more and more zapping lights and disconnected images.

      We turned on the recommended content widget or RCW on June 10th and we are currently watching its performance. On ToughNickel specifically, you might see cross-site recommendations. The goal is to optimize sites for organic recommendations.
      
      For example, if you are looking to start a yoga business, you might see content from a yoga vertical. Such strategies are introduced by our engineering and monetization teams to further boost our sites and content.

         Thank you for sharing that information, Samantha. It sounds reasonable, And is ok for the niche sites, but on HubPages itself they still don’t seem  relatable to the article at all, and I keep getting the same six or seven only no matter what the subject of what I am viewing.                I fear this has something to do with popularity. The popular hubs on a niche have some weight together with how related they are. Popularity wins... All of us seem to be getting the same related hubs on Hubpages, irrespective of the hub we view, no surprise there.

                     The ones on the niche sites are not really "related" either. On my tomato hubs, i notice that the most popular in the Food section show up (that's the subcategory of my hubs).
                     
                     It's the same algorithm, it just happens to work better on the niche sites.

      At the time the pop up appear, I was not reading. I was hiting away a new story on the computer key board. Surprisedly, one of the pop-ups was my long article on Letterpile. It was not related to my work at hand..

      I wonder how readers from outside HubPages react to seeing these proposed articles. The pop-up takes a quarter of the screen; how is that on an iPhone or a SmartPhone.

            On an iPhone, the “Recommended articles” banner also takes 1/4 of the screen. But it only appears when the reader scrolls up, not while scrolling down. And on a mobile device, the X to close the banner is more apparent than it is on a desktop.
            
            There’s another problem, though.  After a while a pop up ad appears that covers the entire screen. At least that has a clearly-displayed “close” button at the bottom.
            
            That seems to be a standard practice across many websites lately, I’ve run into the same thing on other sites not related to HubPages or Maven.  So I wonder if people will simply get used to it.
            
            It does seem to improve our income, as I see that increasing. So I’m feeling split between both arguments.

               Thanks Glenn. I am all for increasing our income, and maybe we will get used to just automatically clicking the x button in time. It’s a worry that it eventually takes over most of the screen though. I can’t see how that is a good thing.

         John, Dr. Mark is right about the niche sites versus HP. On HP articles, the banner at the bottom has no rhyme or reason. However, on the niche sites, what's strewn across the bottom relate to the niche.
         
         All in all, they're annoying. I always click the banner away when I see them on other websites. However, Maven doesn't give us that option.

            There's an X in the upper left hand corner of the banner. If we click this, the banner closes. If people don't notice this, though, it could be a problem.

            The last lot I was getting were for Japanese Female Wrestlers and Most Beautiful Japanese Actresses on my Poems From the Porch article.....maybe I should take the hint and write a poem about Female Japanese Mud Wrestlers.

   I am generally finding them irritating and getting rid of them.
   Although their relevance varies. Wanderwisdom articles have reasonably relevant pop ups.

   Even knowing the can reduce it each time, the banner will be at least somewhat annoying. It is not allowed via third party ads for a reason....

   I usually just close them when they pop up, although I have have clicked through to the articles the few times they were related and caught my attention.
   
   However, I don't think I would like this feature gone as it can get a lot more traffic to hubs that don't get enough.
   
   All Maven needs do is work on it to display only relevant and related hubs.
   
   And anyways, there's always the option of closing it if we don't want it there.

      That sounds great, relevant, and apt. But you have to note that not all hubbers have the same mind set, right? Farrah, have you noted where I opined here that I about to leverage on the Q & A ? Majority want it go. HP editor wants to do away with it. It seems to be compromised some how likewise. But I agreed for a modification. Doing away with it in totos seems to be like throwing the babe with the wash basin or bath.
