What is atheism, is it classified as a religion or just a belief?

I suspect if you ask 100 dying atheists you'll get 100 different answers.  I don't personally fear death - but I do fear dying.  I hope, when the time comes, it's a short journey.

I wonder how much of our "fear" of death comes from the desire to get things done while we're here?

Actually, if I had a choice, I would rather have an illness, as long as it is not Brain, head or lung associated, leading up to my death.  I want to be aware of what is going on, so I can make good plans for family.  I want the opportunity, to think back on my life and be able the chance to make things right.  Do you think, therefore, that the fear might be a fear of losing control?
BTW .. good comments you have made x

Perhaps dying is going to be our greatest challenge yet!

This would only be helpful after the event, at which point he would be dead and we wouldn't know anyway! LOL

Another day, another religious thread that talks down to atheists and when the atheists fire back they pull out the tried and true "Why cant you respect my beliefs as I discredit yours?"

    @ Evolution Guy
Your post above includes the opinions of two other posters followed by your own opinion, “This is an atrocious misrepresentation of the truth.”  It is not really clear to me which specific sentences you feel are untrue.  Could you please point them out for me?

I won't know what an Atheist will think because I am not one. I would know what I would be thinking as a believer though.

No one knows whether god exists or not. So, it is needless to argue about it. If there is god, let it exist alongwith humanbeings. We need not bother about it. If ever god is in need of help, we may help and protect him as we are doing now.

Who said no one knows whether god exist or not, I do and there have been many ,many people who have gained enlightenment or fused with god. Being an Indian have you never heard of of Buddha, Mahavira, Guru Nanak, Sai Baba,Kabir, Tukaram, Meher Bab etc etc.

Who do you think has written the Holy Vedas, Bhagwat Gita Ramayana, Guru Granth Sahib etc - the ones who know god.

    Oh shit.

    Seriously?  Now?

    I mean... Seriously?

    Well, shit.

    For real?

    Well...

Depending on the nature of the death of course.  When grieving the loss of one's own life it seems there's often not enough time to get past the first couple stages.

I have a brother who claims to be an atheist.
I once asked him what he'd be thinking of if he was on his deathbed....would he or wouldn't he call out to God?...

    He said no.

Somehow I really don't believe him, especially since I don't believe there are any real atheists, but of course I can't say for sure.

Maybe we're "wishful thinking".....I call it hope.   I simply believe that everyone in their heart knows there's a God.

    1. Cagsil profile image70
Cagsilposted 14 years agoin reply to this

That's the problem. There are too many people who "THINK" they know "GOD" exists. There is a far difference between "thinking god exists" and "knowing god exists", and only one of the can be done, the other is impossible.

A human being can make the think there is a god, but NONE can know for guarateed fact, regardless of what they say. Hope is what drives their sense of knowing. Which is a faulted basis for believing in god, because it's not based on any true facts. smile

    To The Paul and Cagsil....

When I said "maybe we're 'wishful thinking'", I meant maybe Christians are wishfully thinking that there are no real atheists.
    I KNOW God is real.

    Just wanted to clarify that....

I think it's more just that you're well practiced in convincing yourself you believe things that really you know to be false.

The only way to sustain religion is through indoctrination and then repetition. No sane person would believe the contradictory rubbish otherwise.
How would you tell a sane person that an invisible fairy is going to smite them otherwise?
    Ignorance by choice. lol

  17. Ohma profile image59

I do not fear dying. My fear is of the manner in which I might die. If it were my choice I would prefere to go quietly in sleep as opposed to a lingering illness or a violent death. Death is a natural part of living. All living things die. why fear it?

P.s. Megs I really liked your story.
