What was the most important step in your personal development?

In our personal development there are certain steps when we really make a leap. Those defining moments are the basis to grow as a human being. May it be a realization or a new goal we set or an event in life that challenges us to become better.

    What are those for you?

Follwing redundancy I realized that I had the capacity and ability to take control of my life, that I didn't have to let a job or another person define me; yet I seemed to have allowed that to happen without even knowing it.

I decided to take the time to get to know me by revisiting my past, viewing my present and deciding on what I wanted for my future - the unrealized dreams, the passions.

Personal development has been and remains a wonderful, invaluable educational journey!

    Hello Myrko Thum

For me, it was actually STARTING off the process of CREATING (my first book.)

I had to perform certain exercises, to get myself ready for the change, the change that is, from lazing about, (or doing other stuff just to waste time away) (even relaxing) into, learning to spend my spare time, on creating.

In front of the telly, I sat there, one night, I had a brainwave, an idea for a 'how to' book, I found a piece of paper & a pen, I then stated out planning the layout of my book, I already knew what I wanted to write about because the inspiration that suddenly flooded my mind one evening simply overwhelmed me, my head shook with excitement I was shaking with enthusiasm, but, as I left school at 13 with no qualifications, I had to learn all from start, even how to write basically, how to use microsoft word, how to format & set out pages, etc; for this, I downloaded free e-books from the internet, & followed what is already being done by others.

As time passed, I became involved so mush so that, my enthusiast shone through my creating ability until I had to finish, before publishing.

It seems as though, I had found a new 'trait' that was waiting to be uncovered, so, no one can stop me now lol.

    Just make a start!

    Regards Dale

    Just two significant moments.

One was to start travelling on my own.
The second one was to emigrate to Spain and start all over again...on my own.

From all the other travels on my own, I learned about my own weaknesses and powers so I could naturally follow the road to emigration.

Something my heart had longed for, for so many years. It's the loneliness and silence during those travels that makes you develop yourself as a person to become a better version of yourself.

I'm at the verge of emigrating to Brazil without feeling any fear what so ever:-)

Very inspiring! Travel is a great way to learn what we're made of isn't it! All the best on your emigration. smile

You developed a lot of courage and it seems natural now! Solitude in the travels is actually a good thing as it seems - a lot of time to get new impressions and to reflect.

@ Jasmith1: Thanks! I'll be writing about my journey towards the next emigration:-)

@Myrko Thum: Reflection is exactly what happened to me when I travelled solo. It's a beautiful and scary way to get in touch with your inner self.

Realising I needed to start listening to myself more than others, was big for me. I had a tendency to always ask for others opinions rather than trusting my own experience.

    Team Leaderposted 11 years ago

I once reached breaking point when everything in my life fell apart. My relationship, my career dream, my purpose in life. In my darkest hour I had the revelation that I have to stop feeling sorry for myself and take control of my life. Since then I have always taken action to adjust my attitude and the way I live my life when I was unhappy with something. Since then I have regained happyness in all areas of my life. It was only recently that I discovered that I wanted more from my career and I am currently in the process of making that happen. I also found out that I would like to make my teenage dream of riding a motorbike a reality. I will embark on this project next March.

Being honest with myself about my flaws. Second, learning how to stay on a course of action until the job is done.

The most important step in my own personal development was when I realized that I was a participant in creating my own life.  This one realization has given me the power to step in and make changes whenever I think things aren't going the way I would like.  One of the most important changes is to change my perspective, or my attitude about life or about that part of it that I'm focusing on.

Silar?  Is that you?  Also, developing the strength of my mind through meditation, developing the strength of my body through fitness and developing the strength of my soul through prayer are all equally important aspects of personal development for me.

I think the most important step was accepting that I had Lupus and that it didn't have me.  For a long time I planned my life as if I were perfectly healthy and when I was unable to accomplish a new goal I would be come so disappointed, depressed and unmotivated to move forward.  But the moment I decided to accept my circumstance and limitations and work and plan within a reasonable scope I began to see me dreams and goals become reality.  I wasn't a failure I just had to learn to do things a bit differently.  Great question!!

Yes, everybody is different and has his own "voice" to find and follow. There is that view that every setback is a learned step towards success, seems to be true in your case! Thanks!

Follow your feelings. If you are unhappy, do something about it and make the necessary changes, even though it may not be easy.  Happy people are more successful. Too many people are stuck in the rut and complain every day of their life. They won't get any further, only more miserable.

I have three, The first was when I gave my life to God.  The second was when I became a parent. There is a time when you realize for at least eighteen years you are going to be responsible for another life. It can scare you a lot but also make you grown and learn.  The third time is now.  My children are grown and my daughter just got married.  Now I must grow again learn to turn my energies in a new direction. So now I am relearning my love for wrtiing.

Great question, Myrko. There have been many events which became key stepping stones in my personal development, to the path of conscious evolution.

To make a long story short, I was a truth seeker from an early age. That led me through a fascinating string of belief systems, from being raised Catholic to practising Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism and the Tibetan Mysticism of T. Lobsang Rampa in my teens in the 60s.

The passing of my close younger brother crushed me. That story is told in my 'Star-gazing Wanderer' hub. I left Maine and working with a wildlife photographer and moved to Oklahoma City to work with a fundamentalist church organization. A few years later I was in a marriage to a wonderful woman who lived for the Lord. The story becomes too long for an answer here. There was a pivotal point, after I realized that my beliefs did not hold up to honest self-inquiry, that I wrote out principles to live by such as "I respect the right of every person to their beliefs and choices" and "I appreciate diversity."

The self-inquiry set me on a new course of living authentically.

Great answer, too, E. P. I especially like that you wrote out your principles to live by (added to my "To Do" list). Bravo that "The self-inquiry set me on a new course of living authentically." I now question: Am I living authentically?

I think for me, it was in the first place to find EFT and to experience firsthand how I could actually in an instant turn unpleasant situations around and stop the pain.

For one or two years, I tapped and tapped and tapped and tapped, and layer after layer, I got rid of a whole load of emotional baggage that was hindering me from enjoying my life and being happy.

And I think that this process of removing the outer layers of the onion, so to speak, then in turn made it possible for me to entirely change my life experience and get to a better feeling place.

Many of the things that are in my life today and make it meaningful and exhilarating wouldn't have had a chance before that, because I wouldn't have allowed them in.

  19. Laura Schneider profile image85
    Laura Schneiderposted 11 years ago

Literally, when I learned to read and write, because then I could think for myself and express myself in a meaningful way. "Talk is cheap" as they say and "If it's in writing, it must be true." Not a very deep answer, until you really think about it: everything in my life depends on those two skills, reading and writing, and as a result thinking for myself.
