I am in the midst of writing a book myself. It is a book I hope that many will find useful concerning my experiences with Autism and the Angels. My intention for this book is to show that people are not alone when it comes to Autism and its behaviours, I will attempt to illistrate through my words many life experiences with my son Zac who has autism more on the severe side. As well as many stories that illustrate angelic visitations within our lives.

Hello, by the way my name is lisa and you can visit my hub if you wish. I should add though nothing from my intended book is on my hub page. I hope to meet many soon.

    Thanks for reading!

Lisa,  your topics are very good.  Autism can best be described by the people who loves the child.  People need to hear what you have to say.  The angels topic.. I have no doubt I had at least one visit in my lifetime. It was a 'God thing.'  Blessings

I have self published a collection of poems and have had eleven chapters of a book with twelve chapters typed. However, the typist made so many typos it was pathetic; and every time I edited it and sent it back to her, she charged me again. This book is nonfiction. However,I have several books on the agenda for 2010 as I want to raise funds for twin girls who need eye surgery and I wish to establish a youth camp/retreat center.

Fortunately for me, some of the books have been outlined already. However,my challenge is completing a novel I began at age 15/16 and which was destroyed because it was in the wrong place at the wrong time. When I think about the author of the Harry Potter Series, I know I can achieve my goals. All I have to do is keep working at what I like to do-writing and photography- and stay focused on my ultimate goals.

Thus,I encourage you to establish a long range goal and take incremental short range goal steps towards the final goal,I look forward to purchasing and reading your book.

Yes it is. In fact I am beginning (again) as we speak. My biggest problem being that I begin, think it sucks, then begin again. I could seriously compile a book of beginnings. It's just that bad.

I've studied History for 4 years now and I definitely have considered it. I was working on a fictional story of the rodney king shootings in LA.

Just the Korean/African-American view on it.

It may be hard work but if you know you want to tell a story, go for it!!

Just wanted to add a few thoughts.

I have an honours degree with a major in scriptwriting - it's different from writing novels (more visual, less descriptive) but I have found that it can be applied with the same technique.

It is argued that plot and character are two of the most important parts of screenwriting. It is often undecided which is more important.

For me I would start with a general idea - something that I felt I could expand upon. Then I would spend months working on the characters. I know what they eat for breakfast; their daily routines, every single detail possible about their lives. I imagine what their parents were like and I give each a back story so that I am certain of who they are, where they come from and how they would react to every situation based on their past experience's. Once I had the characters I would often find that the plot points I had marked out in my head were reacheable by the characters actions. If you get stuck at any point think hard about your characters and they will give you the answer.

Personally I wrote my first manuscript over the course of two years, then looked back and realised it was entirely too long, split it into two and started my third. The hardest part for me has been trying to find anyone who has any interest at all in publishing it - I simply don't know what to do with it next. It is sitting on my desk making me feel guilty - anyone got any advice?

Happy, so glad you stopped by.  You are obviously very intellegent and possess skills that most would only hope for.  As far as publishing - look back in this forum - a couple of people have posted on Publishing..  Some really good information.  Blessings!

    Will Apseposted 15 years ago

Take a course or two first. Then be realistic. Your chances of publication are very slim even if you write a genuinely interesting, valuable and entertaining book. If you personally know some literary agents or people who work in publishing that is your best chance.

On the other hand not everybody writes for publication. For some it is just the pleasure.

Thank you Will,  I am aware of the odds of getting a book to publication ...  however many in this forum recommend self publication and selling through an online store like Amazon.  There is some really great suggestions given by hubbers on this topic if you were to read back a ways on the forum.

I have thought about writing a book but I have no idea where to begin and not a lot of confidence that what I have to say is interesting.  I also write a lot for my job and publish research in academic journals and am not sure what that would do to my professional reputation if I was to write a memoir about my life experiences.  I think my problem is that, b/c I'm a researcher, I am too tied to facts and data and what can be supported or "proven" that I have a hard time letting my creative side just run amok.  I look forward to hearing what you decide, though, and admire anyone who commit to writing.

A2shley,  take some time reading some hubs about people's life experiences...  see how they open up their creative side to convey a story.  I'm sure you can do it!  As for your job - use an alias to begin your journey of creative writing.  Best to you!

I have only one answer as to where to start, and that is sit down in front of the computer, and begin where the beginning starts...hahahaha
I did just that and  I wrote one hundred fifty pages, looked back at what I did and destroyed it and started over.  I am on my fourth writing, and this one is the one I was looking for within myself.  I am now on chapter 35, and my friends come over and ask, have you written any more  chapters yet?
I have also written a couple of kids books, for ages 5th and 6th grades.  Those go faster.
Just have fun with it, and if you do not like it,  do it over,  It is not that hard and it goes a lot faster than you might think

    1. Mekenzie profile image80
Mekenzieposted 15 years agoin reply to this

ddsurfsca, good advice ...  I suppose you are right - the first step is just to do it!   I've not yet thrown a whole work out .. but I usually cut and delete and paste ALOT before I get it tweaked to where I want it.  lol   So you have accomplished your goal of completing a couple of books.  Good for YOU!  Thanks for your thoughts!
      Blessings

I am only on hubs about 5 months but I am keen writer and I have a plan for writing a book or possibly a film treatment. I love romance and artistic people and things of all kind. There are so many things to write, the thing to do is just make time and write. I try to write about an hour a day, despite a fulltime job and a busy social life, and a live-in partner, who can be demanding! I mean that in a good way about my patner! : )

Every budding author should have a copy of the Writers Yearbook  or Writers and Artists Handbook. There's a few of them being published now. Their websites are full of great information.

I would consider getting published with LULU, if neccessary. No contracts, no hassle. If the books could be marketed online and if it sold well and made a few thousand quid for me, then it would be even more satisfying. But I write for the love of telling the story more than anything. I envy anyone who writes fulltime for a living, it must be great to have such a sense of fulfillment doing the work you love so much. More later.

I will look into it.  Lulu is another suggestion I will look into.  Thank you dear you have been most helpful.  God Bless and I hope you continue to write for the love of the story!  Mekenzie

This is how I write...  I sit down and write it all as it comes.  I sit on it for a few hours.. Go back for a read and clarify thoughts, correct spelling errors and then sit on it again.  It is amazing how clarity comes if we read and reread.
Thanks for the advice.  I'm working on it.
