I couldn't tell you...I just typed "old man jokes" into Google.  I thought of your avatar's head supplanted on this guys body....it fit so nicely.

But if your powers of perception between us is so far off, what does that say for the rest of your assertions...

I can't always reply to you seriously in long paragraphs...

This thread is comedy gold.  OP denounces American President (which I'm fine with) and then states that all that do not agree must be self-loathing 'America Haters'.

If you can't see the irony in that, then there's no hope for ya.

I certainly don't hate this country, in fact quite the opposite.  I respect the men and women who have served my country.  Yet, I don't see anything wrong with not flying the flag.  There are obviously diplomatic reasons for not doing so and it's not the first time it's happened.  So why the rage?

This is just my opinion here (and unlike others in this thread, I don't mistake my own opinion for fact) but I think some of you are angry but really don't know who to be angry with.  Quite frankly, I could say the same thing myself.  However, I do realize my limitations, as to properly assigning blame.  I'm not naive and know that the world is a helluva lot more complicated then most would lead you to believe.  It's certainly not a world comprised of exclusively black and white.

I wish we could all find points of common interest and work towards a common goal.  Yea, that sounds like some hippy wad of bologna to some of you but it sure as hell beats this 'blame the other guy' b.s. rhetoric that goes on in pretty much every internet forum on the web.  The two party political system is dividing and conquering the American populace, when will we all wake up?

    1. profile image0
EmpressFelicityposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Ah, but if people woke up to the fact that the two-party system is BS, then it would be like taking away their security blanket.  It's very hard to make people throw away their security blankets.

  4. lovemychris profile image80

I think it's more a problem that one party, just as one religion, thinks it has the rights to America.
There's no problem with "bi-partisanship" on dems part.
The problem is the right and their chosen religion think they have eminant domain and anything  else is a usurption.

They have just had their way for far too long imo.

They didn't learn their lesson in kindygarden.....share.

  5. lovemychris profile image80
    lovemychrisposted 14 years ago

hmmm, well some people think it's really one party with two wings.

Nothing about a security blanket, it's about doing something for all Americans....not just the chosen few.

That's what we've been fighting for all this time.....from day one.

And it has always been a fight to get some people to realize, and actually act upon, what they say they believe....we are all created equal.

I'd have to say I agree with them.  In my country (Britain) it's actually gone a stage further - both* the main parties are incredibly similar and they don't really bother pretending otherwise any more.

*I should say all three main parties, now the Liberal Democrats have formed a coalition with the Conservatives.

  6. lovemychris profile image80
    lovemychrisposted 14 years ago

    Ugh..that's no good.
What's the point of elections then?
But it's true here...third/fourth/variety parties are really not allowed. They get on C-Span and alternate news...but not really into the arena.

    I saw a program with
    Green party
    Constitution party
    Libertarian party
    Independent party
    Debating the issues.
And Cynthia McKinney has started a whole new one...Respect party, or something.

But the 2 big ones work hard to keep it just 2. Although Howard Dean when he was Chairman did say "let them all in."
It's so funny to me to hear all these people complain about the the power of gvt...it's really the power of corporations.
And doing something about it is like pulling teeth...pulling your heart out of your mouth is more like it.
Entrenched power from how long ago? The very start?
    Ugh.

      Good question...

No, it's the power of government working in tandem with corporations.  "Corporatism", aka "corporate socialism", aka "fascism" even.

If you do a bit of thinking, you will find that much of the "reform" that is carried out by successive governments always seems to end up penalising the individual or the small independent trader, while actually benefiting large corporations (or not penalising them as much as the "little guy").

Although I don't buy into hardcore libertarianism, I do wish more people would wake up to the fact that much of what makes life worth living comes from (a) an absence of outside interference (rather than being a result of people "doing something about" something), and (b) an understanding of one's own long-term best interests... which essentially boils down to showing a bit of personal responsibility.

I expect this probably won't make much sense to most of the people reading this so I'll stop rambling LOL.

And we all know the ignorance of his administration... to spout aboput about racists when they haven't even read the law.

Because they just can't quite grasp the concept that most don't think like them. That most people in this country actually love this country and don't like what is happening to it. And we don't need people to tell us what now is becoming plainly visible to all.

It's much more than Rush. It's Beck and Hannity and Ingraham and Savage and Severin and more whose names I can't think of. It's an organized campaign. Operation Mockingbird project.
That's why people get so angry and riled up...calling the president anti-American?
        That is lunacy.
        They have captured your minds.

Why do you suppose talk radio is all rightwing? Because a blue state like mass wants no liberal talk? Come on!
Why does Russssshhhhhh get a minute and a half every morning before his regular show to spew out his daily Obama and Democrat hate?
Why would a normal radio-talk host do that?
He's a shill for repubs, as they all are.
And they are filling your heads with lies--using psychological manipulation  on you.

What do you think is the real reason Stern went down?
He was against Bush, Christian Fanatics, and the Bush FCC.
Publicly so--and he had a lot of listeners.
So, now we have all Right all the time. All Obama hate all the time. All gvt is bad all the time.

This has been brewing since 1990-91. Much like the anti-choice campaign, they are stealthy, steadfast and little by little they take over.
And they never reveal their agenda...which is a religious/corporate grip on your life.
Like Rand Paul: All about freedom right? No gvt involvement right?
Except when it comes to the most personal of personal freedoms.

"You will have that baby by order of the state!"

Texas re-wrtiting history books to take Jefferson out, remove separation of church and state and glorify McCarthy!

It's  huge mind-F and all about stifling humanity. Real free expressive humanity.
Put us all back in that Bush/Cheney box.
Shut up. Do as we say. Worship our God. Glorify our wars. Listen to our voices. All money goes to the top. None for the bottom. Total class division. Total class society.
They play you like violins. And you don't see it. Because you are filled with hate. Of Obama. Of Democrats. As if they weren't citizens just like you!
hey--Obama won the election; why doesn't that count?
Are YOU the only citizens that matter? Rush thinks so. Do you?

Rape, slaughter, beating were all new things that outsiders brought with them..

I am so tired of people picking on whatever Obama initiates.  Clearly, there is an underlying attempt to be a partner, not a savior.
No one likes Obama because he is a global citizen, which is what we all are. We do not need to flaunt our American Egos all the time. We need to defer to the idea that we are all inhabitants of this planet and not just tied to the land we live on.

One of the only reason people seem to rail against Obama is they are full of FEAR.If they do not understand something, instead of trying to find out about it, they go around  like Henny Penny, screaming the sky is falling! Life is about change. There is nothing wrong with what he did in Haiti. We HAVE occupied many countries over our much overblown history. it is about time we have a leader who leads from a global perspective and is not enmeshed in ethnocentrism. We sorely need it.

          "Our leader" is not Obama.
          He just represents American leadership.
The "leader" is the 5 facets of American gov't: the pres, the house, the senate, the supreme court, and THE PEOPLE!
What does it take to make PEOPLE understand that?

Wrong. George W. Bush, Greenspan, Bernanke, Paulson, Countrywide, Washington Mutual, Goldman Sachs, Fannie Mae, Freddy Mac and the free market ideologues in the Clinton Administration who allowed Glass-Steagall to be repealed are responsible for the current deep recession and growing national debt. There is plenty of blame to go around, but Obama is not responsible for the economic fiasco. The American people are to blame, perhaps, for voting Bush into office. Actually, they didn't Gore got more votes and the election was stolen from him by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Well, the biggest problem is all the money that's sloshing around in Washington and in federal, state and local elections and the swarm of lobbyists from the oil, financial, mining, auto, insurance, defense and pharmaceutical industries that wield undue influence on elections and legislation. Government-financed elections are needed to counter the influence of corporations and unions on elections, legislation and regulatory agencies.

Americans have been rather stupid the last couple of years, still are so far as I can tell as long as Barney Frank is still in office, he was surely a big jokester today as usual, but the idea of government paid elections is above and beyond and reflects the root intent and backing of much that you post.  Kudos to you, you do a good job implementing your assigned tasks.

The time to start doing something to reduce the deficit by reducing expenditures and/or increasing taxes is when we are sure we are on the way to a recovery from the recession. I completely agree that we should be worrying about the increasing debt and develop realistic plans to deal effectively with it.

      2. Ralph Deeds profile image67
Ralph Deedsposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Well, I completely agree that it will be crucial to deal with the deficit once we are sure we are coming out of the recession. This will mean expenditure reductions and/or tax increases, probably both. The first place I would cut would be in the military budget which has continued to increase although the Cold War ended 30 years ago. Despite the end of the Cold War we have continued weapons programs based on assumptions of threats that are no longer likely to occur. I have  no doubt that there are plenty of other places to cut, but I suspect both expenditure cuts and tax increases will be required.

“When facism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”--Sinclair Lewis

      Fourteen Defining
      Characteristics Of Fascism
      By Dr. Lawrence Britt
      Source Free Inquiry.co
      5-28-3

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

      1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

      2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

      3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

      4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

      5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

      6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

      7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

      8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

      9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

      10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

      11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

      12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

      13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

      14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Bush#1 used the same old Reganomics "trickle down" theory.  In your scenario it took twelve years for the plan to work and it just happened to work while Clinton was in office.  Yeah, right!  And how did Dumbya's economic plan work out?

"We are not heading for a recession, our economy is fundamentally sound."  Dumbya said this right before his dupes put him in for a second term.  LOL!

Well, if you like to use the 'Dumbya' reference to our past president, George Bush, then I would suggest that you realize that the likes of Reid and Dodd still maintained control for much of his term, and I'm not sure how supportive it is to your position that the 'intellectual wunderkinds' of the likes of Reid and Dodd directed the country during much of his second term -- and are Blatantly in Control Now!

Morons, Obama has Morons on his HubPages Team........smile

Do you even know who controlled congress during the majority of Dumbyas two terms, or are you just guessing again!

And your answer on the number of years Democrats were in control of congress under Dumbya?  You seem to have missed that question somehow?

"the 'intellectual wunderkinds' of the likes of Reid and Dodd directed the country during much of his second term -- and are Blatantly in Control Now!"

What about the first four years of Dumbya's term?

They were certainly in control when the economy tanked!

You know, when Dodd was strongarming Countrywide for a SUHWEEEEET mortgage.

Amnesia the first six years, Huh.  What's your excuse for when Bush had both houses of congress to help him pass his "brilliant" economic plans?  What great thing did he do?  Oh yeah, gave the rich huge tax rebates.  What a plan!  And how did that work out for the economy?

My answer?  You asked that? You really want it exposed here that for the entire second term of the Bush Admin. the Dems were in control.  That furthers your inane arguments?  Well then, that is interesting.  I would have thought you all knew that, or are you misremembering. smile

Were you aware that Bush wanted Freddie and Fannie put under the Treasury Dept and controlled, so clearly were they sucking wind and loving their derivatives? and setting a national financial example?  Your Dems said Uh Uh.

You disregarded the last question as seems to be your style.  What excuse do you have for when Bush had both houses of congress to solve all of America's problems?

Yeah, just like we needed to give Israel nukes!  That really calmed down things in the Middle East, didn't it.

Hmmm...didn't we admonish Russia for doing the same with Cuba?

And if you had your 'druthers', that no one had nukes, no doubt we all really would, why are you so quiet on the Muslim front?  Frightened?  Quick to trash any religion but Muslim?  Sounds like the current Administration.  Why?
