Things you might need to know about Dagupan City, Pangasinan.

(April 17, 2010) My 10th 60dc HuBlog is a tribute to the city I thrive and live in, the Dagupan City, which is located in the lovely Pangasinan province.

Dagupan City, hmmm, virtually unknown outside the Philippines, for it is not as robust and sophisticated compared with the behemoths such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome, and among other great cities. But still this city is very dear to me and I am truly proud of her and I will keep on loving her for the rest of my life. Dagupan is strategically located in the mid-northern part of the province, lying across the coastline of the Lingayen Gulf. Additionally, this city, which is founded in 1947, has its own distinct characteristics and charm. Dagupan City is the nerve center of not only the whole province of Pangasinan but in the whole Region 1 or Northern Luzon as well, when it comes to commercial and financial aspects. A bustling city that was ravaged by a devastating earthquake in 1991 that plastered her main business establishments and other residential homes, is now fully recuperated and rejuvenated and is rearing towards further development and advancement. The city is comprised of 31 barangays or villages, and 5 of which are island. It is a gateway to different municipalities and to the other key cities of the Province (Urdaneta City, San Carlos City, and Alaminos City) and to the popular tourists attractions such as the enthralling Hundred Islands National Park in Alaminos City, the breathtaking white-sand beach of Bolinao, the historic Cape Bolinao lighthouse, the shrine of our Lady of Manaoag and among others great tourists destination the province is very proud of.

Dagupan City is named after Pandaragupan, a term coined to describe the place where people converge, since around 200,000 to 400,000 people dwell on her soil during day time and dips to around 149,554 (the population of the city according to the latest census) during nighttime, a testament that the city is a sort of magnet that attracts enormous activity while she is awake. Dagupan City is typically small compared with other cities in the province and to the entire Philippines, but ironically it has the largest village in the country, that is the Bonuan Boquig, which is just one ride away from the city’s top tourist destination - the Bonuan Tondaligan Blue Beach, a place where the arrival of Douglas Mc Arthur and his comrades in the City is depicted and honored by the statues that are erected there. The city also boasts of a great resort to have some fun under sun, which is the Dagupan Leisure Coast Resort which is located in Bonuan Binloc.

The tranquil and serene Dagupan City Blue Beach, not one of the top beaches in the country but still, its worthy of a visit.

Hotels, Schools, Tourists Destination and More in Dagupan City

The city has fine hotels and inns too like the Star Hotel, Dagupan Village Hotel, and Floren Hotel. The city also houses several colleges and universities that already produced topnotch graduates in various field of studies and discipline in the country such as the University of Pangasinan, University of Luzon, Lyceum Notrhwestern University, Collegio de Dagupan, STI-College Dagupan, AMA Dagupan and AIE Dagupan. The city also boasts of primary and secondary schools such as St. Albert School, Ednas School, St. Albert School, Dagupan City National High School (my alma mater in highschool0, St. John Cathedral School, Philippine Universal Institute and the Divine Word Academy of Dagupan which just last year produced an Asian Champion in Sudoku game.

For those who wants to settle for best buys and steals the city have business establishments and shopping malls that are abound here like CSI Square, CSI City Mall, CSI City Mall, Magic Department Store (Guilig Street and Galvan Street), Nepo-Mall in Arellano-Bani, and BHF Shopping Center in Mayombo and these are easily accessible by jeepneys and tricycles.

And if you are tired shopping or perhaps enjoying the sights and sounds of the place you may find time to visit the Dagupan City Museum to see masterpieces and crafts of various artists, or simply droll through the city plaza and see the old train erected their that was utilized many moons ago.

The city’s main industry is the production of bangus or milkfish, which is best, when grilled with tomatoes and other seasoning on its belly. The city stole the thunder from other well-known cities in the country by smashing the World Guinness Book of Records in the longest barbecue category set by Peru. Dagupan City’s Bangusan Grill measured 1,007.56 m (3,305.64 ft) last May 3, 2003 to break the 613 meters long record set by Canchia, Peru in November 1999. The momentous event was culminated during the city’s Bangus Festival festivity, the Kalutan ed Dagupan –which means Grilling in Dagupan City and accompanied by a Mardi Gras where around 40,000 to 60,000 people took part.

Again this year the people of Dagupan is set to welcome again her visitors on her annual celebration of her Dagupan City Festival as fun filled activities were again drawn to give some cheers and delight. The line up of festivities gets better each year as the perennial favorite events like the street dancing, bangus rodeo, live rock band music, and hosts of other great events are whipped out to give further excitement and joy once more. The street dancing is expected to be more colorful and more creative, as the jovial and active participants are cinched to give their bests to show the vast culture the city has. And last but not definitely the least the Kalutan ed Dagupan will again attract throngs of visitors from all over the province and even foreign tourists, to enjoy the sounds of invited top bands and prominent celebrities of the country. The people here will again be treated to a one of a kind street party that showcases music at its best while enjoying grilling the city’s favorite and pride the milkfish that we call here bangus.
