The question is too general.  There are ways to make money online and there are ways to piss it away online.
Don't let people tell you this place is all about making money though, okay?
It's not.  Yes, you can post ads on your hubs but if they are nothing but big advertisements who is going to READ them and see the ads?  You won't get rich here and as far as i am concerned, that isn't what hubpages is all about anyway.
I would also be a bit suspicious regarding any suggestions you get from hubbers who cannot even speak proper English. (On the other hand, I have seen that you don't have to be intelligent or well-educated to make money either.)
Research each opportunity before spending one penny.  That's your best bet.  if everyone here knew all the answers they would be earning some money as consultants.

The better approach is to not try to make money, but instead learn SEO and how to build a page that you know you can get onto the first page of Google.  Then once you're comfortable with your SEO abilities then maybe look for a niche your good at or is available.  The goal is to know how to get any offers in front of enough eyeballs to make enough sales. You can only do that often times if your on the top search results or you have a really long, long-tail keyword setup.  Get to it.

well, its really kind of strange! so many of you guys are going through the same old dilemma which I am going through.. How to make money online.. how to click tht jackpot! how how how!!!! ah!

none the less.. there are few facts, which I want to uncover here.. i do not think anyone will be reading this, as this post is over two months old (as hubpages.com told me!) but hey.. will give it a try:
        a) Online is a business. And business means money. People are there who are earning through Online business. be it adsense, or affiliate marketing or any other stuff. Some people are earning!
        b) MLM or Multi Level Marketing is another kind of business, which can give really huge returns. Now, again, some people are really earning way too much through MLM.

Now, what I have seen and observed is, that in both of these business, the stuff which is required is active participation of unique users. It simply means more traffic. and more business.. and it means more money.

        Yes. Right till now.

Now, lets view another very important fact: As with the Real Economy, in Online and MLM world, the same cruel formula applies: 80:20!
Thus, 80% of the people have 20% of the resources, and 20% of the people have 80% of the resources. Do you guys know why?

I don't know. may be some among us know.. I would love some insight!

Usually the ones saying you can make thousands a week online are the ones selling products to help you make thousands a week online, and making the money through this, not from teh techniques they are selling.

Making money online is possible, just don't follow the misconception that it is easy, or can be done with a couple of hours work a day.

I have to agree with retellect. Anytime someone says 'make x amount of money in this x amount of time, guranteed'. I have to wonder about the motives of the person saying that. Are they truly a good Samaritan out to help other people, or just wanting to make money by telling other people they can make money. To me, any sane/logical person that has some special strategy to make thousands online wouldn't just publicly put their strategy out there for people to buy or follow, unless they made money selling their 'special strategy'.

There are ways to make money online but yes in these days it is very difficult because of all the scams going around.

Its really difficult to know what is good and what is not so good.

My partner and I work our butts off running an honest business.  We made a commitment from day one to be careful and stay away from scams.

We have even turned down JV opportunities with some pretty big names because we didnt like what they were promoting and in all honesty that cost us thousands but we stuck to our guns and still have our good names and integrity.

You really need to find someone you can trust to speak with before starting anything online.

They arent all scams but it really is a matter of figuring out what is and what isnt.

There are two types of online business models. In one you sell stuff. I do know people who have quietly built up online marketing channels that are making thousands of dollars a week selling stuff. And it took them years to get to that level.

In the other model, you make money by telling other people how to make money online. I bet it works, I just don't know anyone personally who's making thousands of dollars a week doing it.

Either way will work. But to make a lot of money online, you have to be able to figure things out for yourself. Or you'll be scammed to death.

Im starting to meet with some of these marketing gurus online, while they do claim that they have secured $118,619.69 monthly income I have my doubts as well, but they are healthy doubts not stagnating doubts.  Many of those claims never said that everyone will secure the same effects as we all know some people seemingly reach the top of the challenge sooner than others.  The information provided help others to experience and see if it is their ninch market or not.  They never bother to go into great details of the how's who's or what that the person experienced in acquiring such income.  Such information is never freely given. Im do beleive that some of the people that I have recently been seeing are a bit more sincere in  their efforts for reaching others as the theory of practice is proving that its not much fun being on the Mountain top all alone.  I do see a vague light of change on the planet as people are starting to have a greater ideology of shared wealth.

The best way to detect scams online is to just do a search  with the phrase "is ______ a scam" and you will find a lot of information from people who have been scammed by the company. Do this any time you are unsure of a company or website and it is much less likely that you will ever be fooled. You will notice that most are indeed scams (like most people have already pointed out).

If you have observed a scam or been the victim of a scam, spam or fraud and want to report it for enforcement. You can do that on internet easily. You can search on Google, Yahoo or any search engines with keywords internet complaint center, consumer fraud reporting or FBI office near your place to report a crime or scam on internet.

How to determine if a business is a scam? With so many scams being broadcast on the internet, it is important to research a business thoroughly before becoming involved. A little time spent researching a company can go a long way to protect your wallet and identity.

Gather information on the company. The way to do this is to go to www.who.is and find out who owns the domain. Some companies also post their information on the website on the contact page. A red flag for a scam would be a domain owner who is out of the country and is advertising work in the U.S. Many domains are now being hidden with a program that is hiding the who is information. Scammers often hide their true identities.

To Hubpages Admin please forgive me if I spread www.who.is is prohibited. Please delete this post and please don't delete my account. I really love to stay with Hubpages here until my life end.

To Hubbers that read this post, if you have any useful information that related with this topic please share with all Hubbers here. Thanks

Yes it is possible to make really good money online. For example I have been in online business / marketing for over 10 years and I earn my living online. So I know what I am doing and i am makeing over 10K a day easily right now. And it would be fear to say that I will never ever release or sell my methods to anyone as I do not want any competition. All the get rich fast programs you see on the internet this days they do work but you have to follow them all the way . Most people fail because they give up half way or never do anything. Anyways another point is that with most of this get rich programs you will not make what they claim you can make because there are just way too much competition out there. So if you want to make money come up with your own methods or buy few of those programs read them undestand them and modify them.

      good luck

Just my thoughts - I think it is wrong for some companies to offer so-called "Data Entry" jobs online giving the person the impression that all you have to do is input information for them and you get paid for it.  In reality, all these companies do is teach you how to promote goods as an affiliate with Clickbank or PayDotCom, so there is no guarantee of income - but on the other hand you have to pay the company who tells you this, something like $49.95 before you realise what they are advertising isn't primarily about a Data Entry job after all!  I don't have a problem with the fact there are no guarantees in running an internet affiliate business - that's not the point.  But I am offended about the misleading way these programs are marketed and promoted as pure "Data Entry Work From Home Jobs."  I guess if they told you the truth in the first place, they wouldn't be able to suck the $49.95 out of you, for their "teaching" program, and it is only when you've outlaid the money then you know the truth.

To me to avoid this kind of problem, don't join this program. That's it. You can do by your own to promote products on the internet. What you can do is you can use search engines to find the information that are you looking for. For example, you want to make money as affiliate. Find good website that pays you real money as well as join international webmaster forum to gather more information how to make money on internet. You also can ask them many questions.

I've tested many of the methods people use to make money online.  I've earned hundreds within a few days.  It took me a few weeks to earn over a thousand, but it took a lot of work.  Those clickbank screen shots that show thousands a day, I don't know about that.
In case you didn't know, there are sites that create screen shots of clickbank and Google Adsense.

I'm sure some of the gurus that have thousands of email subscribers make a lot of money.  This is because people will buy any product they endorse.  However, without a huge responsive email list or tons of traffic I don't believe these results can be achieved.

There is one way it can be achieved easily, but it takes a lot of skill in seo, webdesign and salesmanship.  The method I'm referring to is online marketing for the offline business.  (This is what I do).

MLMs can deliver huge bonuses, but that requires members that are willing to invest in a business.  Some mlms are very inexpensive, ten dollars or less.  However, the bonuses are not that large.  The more you pay to get into an mlm, the higher your bonus will be when recruiting others.  The problem is that not many people know how to get referrals.  This discourages many to join.  If you can't help your downline, then you are on a sinking ship.

Hope this helps in your quest to make money online...

      Here's a problem, and a thought.

Most people are failures, and by failures I mean dismal ones.

I've investigated, researched, and generally delt with every single one of these online "Scams" as you call them.

I've seen stuff from a $1 ebook online , to a $9447.00 "Proven wealth system" , and know about all the methods and stuff they use to make money with the internet.

And here's the thing , every person that complains about them is a failure in life.

See , people tend to be one of two types of people, either people that get stuff done , or people that complain and moan about every single thing in their life.

I've done it several times, taken a person 'off the street' and show them how to make money with a computer in one of a few hundred ways that work.

Guess what? 98% of people complained, and threw a hissy fit when I told them that it would take more than 15 minutes to do! Most of the people who complain about getting scammed online have absolutely no mental capacity , if it doesn't involve bright colors and catchy music, they don't know what to do!

Our society is to a point where unless it's on TV in a reality show format,  it's not real.

Well guess what? 5 years from now, all of you are going to still lead uninteresting , worthless lives.

      Do you know why?

Because all you do is complain , and throw fits when you don't get a magic pill. You're too used to playing little league baseball and winning a trophy regardless of your skill. You've been taught that life is fair , and everyone is equal. I hate to break it to you , but that's what loosers tell themselves.

Surely you don't mean that every single scheme is genuine?

To be fair, you have to admit that most of the "make money online" "gurus" promise easy, effortless money - and if they say that, then it's a scam regardless of whether the method works, because they're promising a lie.

I agree with this - in fact, there have been articles in the Australian press about this, because we followed the American practice of "encouraging self-esteem" in school by not letting children fail - and the result, we're now realising, is a generation of young adults who think they're entitled to success without working for it.

However, the chance of you getting more out of anything than you put into something is very slim. Hard work and perseverance is key to success, both online and off-.

People say that there's no such thing as a free lunch, and yes, that is true, but it doesn't really answer the question. Yes, it's possible to earn lots of money online, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. You can't just sit back and wait for money to start rolling in. You've got to come up with a plan, market it, advertise, pitch the idea to the right people, etc. There are plenty of schemes that are scams, and few that actually work, but the point is that there are some that work. It's not all pointless.

Be diligent and creative, scrutenize and persevere, and you might be one of the lucky ones who make it.

Thousands a week, sure, but not overnight.  The key is it takes time.  I estimate 1-year to 18-months before seeing "decent results" and 3-years to 5-years for good results.

The question is, do you have it in you?  Whatever plan someone is pitching should be honest with the timeframe.  If they aren't run away, fast.

Making money online can certainly be done, but the most important obstacle in your way is generating enough traffic. The most cost effective way to get traffic is through the search engines. IE. it can cost you nothing.

BUt the thing is.... with search engines people usually only click results on the first page. Which means that you need to find a way to reach the first page of google for your topic. Which means work......

Some people will make a TON of money online, others will make absoulutely nothing.

Rather then these products that offer you money for nothing choose the ones that offer you step-by-step training on how to make money online. It's not free but it is cheap and they are actually really good most of them even give you their contact telephone numbers so if you need any help they are there. I think you do have to be very careful though which ones you choose. Oh and you don't get money for nothing so yeah you do have to put in some money and hard work into it but in the long run it does pay off big time!!

Most of the make money online ads I've looked into are only after your money, and most of the costs are hidden.  You learn about it later and wished you'd never joined.  One particular thing to beware of are the phony testimonials.  Just because there is a whole list of people who claim to make money using a particular system or whatever still doesn't mean it's true.  Many of these so-called testimonials are made by people associated with the person who is running the scam.  So far, I haven't found any online "opportunity" that isn't out to make money off of you!

There should be a warning sign for newbies. It should read "caution you are likely to have 3rd degree burns shortly, it you are looking to get rich quick" This is only figuratively.

Hi, just caught up with this thread. My main occupation is property investment and writing about it - and there are lots and lots of online scams around this subject, so please be careful. What I have learned in over 30 odd years of being in this business is this ... if it sounds too good to be true, it REALLY IS. I have never come across a get rich quick scheme that doesn't end up leaving the 'customer' worse off than when he or she started. Those that don't get scammed have one thing in common - they wait before signing up to anything long enough to do their research, and then usually discover something isn't quite right about the concept or the company or individual promoting it. Evading scammers is simple, just adopt commonsense! Of course, there are a few good investment companies out there, but 9 times out of ten, they aren't the good guys - so tread very very cautiously.
