I've always said that I didn't think Mitt would win in SC, and now Newt is ahead in the state in several polls. The GOP has gone so far to the right that they don't want a moderate. It just boggles my mind that any reasonable person could back Newt. If you think we have gridlock in Washington now, it will be 200% worse if Newt gets to be POTUS. It will be "my way or the highway" even more than it is now. At least Mitt has proven that he can compromise and work with Dems. Of course, the ABC interview with Newt's ex-wife will air before the SC primary, so perhaps voters will see more of the "real" Newt.

I don't like everything about Mitt, but compared to Newt, he's a saint! If the GOP nominates Newt, I think they'll be shooting themselves in the foot. They HAVE to have some indies in order to win, and I can't see many indies jumping on the Newt train.

I'd choose Paul over Newt any day.

The Neo Cons have hi-jacked the Republican party AND the Democratic party.

They think that the US must preserve it's purpose and instill it's values in others.

In so doing, they've lost track of what US values are.

It's impossible to have an opinion on Newt because he doesn't stand for anything.

Give him $50 and he'll tell you that the Earth is flat.

Give him $100 and he'll dance like a monkey.

Give him $1.6 million and he'll help out Fannie and Freddie.

Employment's going to go up this year because it's an election year.

All of that 0% interest rate is going to start to have it's POSITIVE effect this year.

Then it will come crashing down about 5 from now.

I forgot that IRs are at 0% officially, but that the Fed is printing money on the order of trillions and secretly bailing people out.

You're officially losing money if you have cash.

Oh, and I suppose I shouldn't say that it HAS to go up. Stagflation (you know, the one phenomenon that your school of economics was disproven because of?) has been going on for the past 3-4 years.

I'm just saying that it is likely to end this year.

Romney will be the nominee, and Obama will win the general election. So no worries about Newt.

However, I do think a Gingrich presidency would be HIGHLY entertaining. Every other day there would be an allegation of adultery. Every State of the Union would feature at least one errant egg flying toward the President's gigantic head.

*A politically incorrect remark every morning before breakfast (directed toward the group du jour--blacks, Native Americans, women, gays, women, atheists, women, bald men, Vietnam veterans... women, etc)

*A threat of war against France by lunch,

*And a "serious" proposal to abolish the judicial branch by dinner (or at least merge it into the Oval Office).

And through it all we would smile, shake our heads, and say "that's our Newt!" and go on with our day.

Newt's surge just proves that people don't really pay attention to much of anything but a smooth talker. If Paul or Romney had the oratory skills of Newt, they'd have the nomination in the bag. Thankfully, that's all Newt really has going for him, so hopefully he wont surge much further.

You're talking about Chris Christie, right? I don't support him but he's the only one in the field who's not a complete joke.

Romney's going to get the nomination, now that the majority of GOP voters have exhausted all the anybody-but-Romney choices. Most will grudgingly vote for Romney (except the Paulites). It won't be close to enough to win.

The sad thing is that Romney's spectacular loss will be seized on by the nuts in the Republican party, who will say they really should have nominated some freak like Santorum or Gingrich, and we'll have another 4 years of an opposition party that lives in an alternate universe.

I was dismayed that Huntsman bowed out before SC.
Didn't he get the endorsement of the major newspaper there?
I was honestly waiting for him to get his turn in the spotlight.

IDK, it's all good theater so far and more fun to keep the mud slinging intra-party for the time being.
It would be really anticlimactic to hand it to Romney now.

Either way, tho, the GOP is screwed.
If they run a neocon and he loses, they will wish they'd run moderate Romney.
If they run Romney and he loses, they will say they would have won if only they'd run a neocon.

The problem is the deep divide inside.
And yeah, unless the economy takes another nosedive, it's no contest.

Interesting forum of dialogue.  I think Obama is going to be reelected.  I've watched the Republican debates and there have been a couple of times where my jaw dropped.  I'm not a Republican (but I come in peace!!), and I respect the views and beliefs of others.  I will say that there have been moments where I thought to myself if I were a registered Republican, I would be so embarrassed at some of the comments and monologues that have been presented.  And I'm sorry, Newt is sometimes just out of control.  He's a distraction.  I think Huntsman was so in the middle of the road that Republican voters may not have loved him.  Ron Paul has such passion in what he believes although he's kind of out there.  Romney seems to have the most business sense.  I don't see there is a "wow" candidate for the GOP.

Ron Paul and his son Rand Paul come across as very smart.  However, George W. Bush really did NOTHING for the intelligence perception of the Republican party.

I haven't been following the Republican debates all that much... but I would imagine that Obama would be a much better speaker than the majority of other candidates.  Obama really shines in debates.  He normally keeps his cool and comes across very intelligent.

If Ron Paul and Obama ever debated, it would be over.

Ron Paul would win in a landslide. Democrats would wake up and start seeing their party for what it is.

There would be a second revival of the Austrian School of Economics. (The first one was when Ron Paul debated the Republicans in 2008. Most Democrats didn't bother paying attention).

If my choices are a bunch of douchebags, then the smartest thing I can do is NOT vote.

Voting costs money: I have to wake up, take a half hour of my time, use gasoline, and sit out in the cold.

And then, on top of that, there's NO reassurance that the button I pressed at the poll actually voted for the person I wanted.

Brief Overview of Congressman Paul’s Record:

He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.

Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress.

I agree there have been opportunities for embarrassment from the candidates, but that is the norm. I have been watching elections and debates since Nixon. The issue I do have is that there was never any comment or notice of why a candidate, or the candidates wife, would seal their writings (ie: Ms. Obama's papers) or any mention of the associations and friendships (ie: Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, etc.) that are actually anti-American. I think all politicians are suspect by their nature, but the lack of a hard look at the Obama's history and actions while picking at anything/everything no matter how dated or "common knowledge" of any opposition, reflects poorly on the news media. They are the ones who let us down and keep us all from being able to make an informed choice. So I will hold my nose and vote for the conservative that is running against Obama, whoever it is, because they may at least care about the same country I do.
