I just saw a video online where a mom admits to still breastfeeding her kids even though they're 8 yrs old.  Why she allows it?  well, she believes a child should decide for themselves when to stop.  anyways, here's the video if you want to check it out

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxv6R9fU … re=related

would you continue breastfeeding your kids until they decided to stop, ladies?  Or do you think she's nuts?

lol Yeah same here. I think if that lady were smart, she should definitely start waning her kids off...NOW...before people start to accuse her of something sick and perverted doing that.  Plus, I know it can't be good for the girls as they grow up.  What are they going to say to their future girlfriends/boyfriends when they grow up?  "sorry, but i just got to have some more of my mom's breast milk?"  hmm

depends if you are working or not. I breastfed my baby for three years because she is allergic to cows milk and soya. I need to sacrifice pumping milk, preserve them in a ref, then bring it home, but if she is not allergic to any milk, then I will only breastfed up to one year.

The mother makes the decision to stop breast feeding, but nature dictates when is best.  A child is usually introduced to solid foods by three months and by six months he or she has a tendency to start biting or playing with the breasts.  Hence most mothers ween their children by six months and no later than one year.  I am sure breast milk has fulfilled its purpose by that time.  Therefore the mother should make the decision for the child.

Well if it's not considered perverted by..now...then I can imagine it would be when the girls start hitting puberty.  I can't imagine this doing the girls any good psychologically, as they grow up.

No not till 8years. An infant should be exclusively breast fed up to 6 months and weaning food should start.I think it is unnatural and not good for mental development of the child.

I'm going to go with nuts. I'm all for nursing until 1-1.5ish. When my child can come up, lift my shirt, undo my bra and say "boob" or whatever, that's where I draw the line. I realize it's a source of comfort and nurturing for an infant, but if gets to the age of awkward you're probably doing more harm than good. Really, what in the world is the benefit to any involved to be nursing at 8?

Is she using diapers too? Child might decide that he still needs it you know. And a pacifier. A crib might be much safer than a regular bed, just to order custom made one to fit that "baby". Breast milk is for babies. If your child is not a baby, stop being dumb.

If I was lost out in the jungle or living where there wasn't enough food and somehow it was keeping my kid alive, yes. Otherwise, not a chance! I nursed my kids for 18 months except for one whom I had to forcibly stop at 2 years (that's when it really hit home that his digestive system was way out of whack and he starved without breast milk). A neighbor from long ago breastfed her little girl until she was almost four - she said it was cultural, she's Mexican - but that boys shouldn't as long as a girl. That's the oldest I know personally, about 4. Still, in America, that's unusual and quite odd.

Stevennix2001posted 13 years agoin reply to this

I agree it is quite odd, as I have to wonder why this woman hasn't at least tried to wane her kids off her boobs.  then again, who am I to tell a person how to raise their kid?

  5. rebekahELLE profile image85
    rebekahELLEposted 13 years ago

hmm, clearly they have some alternative beliefs from watching the video.  I did find it rather disturbing to hear how the girls talked about it and how the mother said her breasts basically belonged to the girls... do these girls go to school?  I wonder if it will affect their sexual preferences as they age?  I can't see that there would be long-term benefits of having an 8 year old child clinging to her mother's breast like a baby.

With my oldest son, I breastfed until he was in his 2's. My second son stopped earlier.

I've heard of some traditional cultures doing it until the age of 5 (though more for the nutrition and birth control than because "the kid should decide when to stop," I think), and I think 2 or 3 years is totally reasonable in the developed world, which I know is longer than a lot of people here in the US go for, but 8 is weird.

On the otherhand, playing devil's advocate, what are this kid's test scores like? Breast milk is supposed to aid in the development of brain function and they've even got formula that has some of the same vitamains in it.

I'm just saying, if this kid aces the SAT's we may be on to a controversial yet widely growing trend.

Holy crap. If the kid aces the SATs and word gets out, all hell will break loose. Already mothers are under societal scrutiny and pressure. We are told what to eat/not eat during pregnancy. We are pressured to deliver drug-free. We are made to feel guilty if we cannot or choose not to breastfeed. We are still considered "less than" if we work outside the home.

These are all fairly new trends. When I was a child hardly any moms breastfed -- not to mention that they all smoke and drank throughout their pregnancies and had spinals that made them completely numb during delivery). Very few women (bohemians, mostly) breastfed back then.

So if this takes hold, not only will mothers be shlepping their tween and teen kids to soccer, they'll be providing the "all natural liquid snacks," too! sad

in a word - revolting....if the child is old to undo the mother's blouse to help itself to the milk bar then it is certainly old enough not to drink from her breast!!  and I too could not watch the video...however if this was the only way the mother could provide sustenance to child then OK...but surely that is not in this day and age!

I know many will not like what I have to say but extended breastfeeding used to be the only way humans survived. It was a standard to breastfeed at least until a child turned 3, in some cultures 4. Children who are breastfed longer than usual American average, that is about 6 months (if they are lucky),tend to take cues from their mom and don't bite. It is interesting that so many of you condemn the idea of extended breastfeeding but how many of you  actually have a remote experience with nursing a child older than a year old? I personally don't think I would be comfortable nursing a 7 year old and neither a 6 or 5 year old. But many of you frowned upon nursing a child that already has teeth. There are many poor infants who get their first teeth at an early age of 3 months, does that mean they need to be weaned onto a bottle of formula?
Breastfeeding is not the same as bottle feeding. There is much more to it than just feeding. It is love giving and that's why children are so attached to it.

  20. Mommy S profile image61

Absolutely not. I also believe in baby-led weaning. However, you need to pay attention to your child's signals. There comes a time when a mother may ignore the signals because she's not ready to let go. I have no problem breastfeeding until the baby is 2, but by then you're looking at pre-school and playdates and you're baby won't want to be breastfeeding during those times. My baby is 11.5 months and weaning herself from day-time feedings. She may very well want to nurse before bed until she's 1.5yrs old, but no way would I allow her to go past 2. Sometimes kids just need a little push! 8 is far too long to allow it!

Well, it must depend of the pleasure she takes out of it.
But she'd better feed him something else also because her milk would not be rich enough to guaratee the kid's harmonious growth.
Nevertheless, she should be aware of the risk of being accused of incest, she's taking. There are people who see evil everywhere...
She'd better have an adult suck her.

Yes, on so many levels. I still don't know exactly what I think about it. I found seeing that 7- or 8-year-old girl suckling up to the mother's breast somewhat disturbing. It looked very unnatural, too. Grotesque.

And how silly is this argument about the children deciding for themselves when they should stop feeding from the breast? Can small children decide such a thing? Isn't it the mother's responsibility to decide?

there was a movement some years back for breasfeeding older kids, from the same place as waterbirthing, and a host of other odd things that mostly have become 'normal' or disappeared.

There is no practical reason why this mother should not do what she wants, except the teeth maybe.  There is no evidence that it might mentally harm the kid.  It is her body and her kid - just because it is not what you all consider normal does not make it bad ion any way - in fact study might show that you are harming your childrens development by stopping breastfeeding too early, something has to be responsible for so many under achievers around these days.
