Customizable Home Page

We just rolled out an exciting new feature on HubPages: the customizable home page.  You can now pick and choose from an array of configurable widgets that should allow you to put all the things you are interested in keeping track of on HubPages together in one place.

To check it out just sign in, go to the homepage, and then select the "customizable home page" in the upper right hand corner.  A default layout will be created based on what we know about you, but the real power comes adding, configuring, and positioning the widgets as you like.  If you don't like the new page, you can always switch back to the traditional home page.

We also deployed some other minor changes with this release.  As usual, please let us know if run into any new problems with the site.

    Thanks!

This is what I love about HubPages. The upgrades just keep getting better and better.

I can't even remember all the improvements to the Hub editing tools over the last two years, but do remember enough to know I'd never want to go back to that older version.

      Outstanding!

I have a comment.  Is there any way that when we are on our home page, browsing the forums & we find a thread we want to read, we click it and it could open up in a different window? Then we'd have our home page open & the forum open at the same time to toggle back and forth.

    Make sense?

      Yes! This would be helpful.

      What browser are you using?

I'm using Firefox. If I use the right click on my mouse it allows me to 'Open Link In New Window' and 'Open Link In New Tab'.

Or I just click on a link with the scroll wheel that's in between my two buttons and it automatically opens the page in a new tab.

Learn about homepage links don't work, or are they not supposed to.

Also, I'm not sure I like how it looks unfinished. May just stick with the regular home page; it's easier on the eyes to look at. After fiddling with it for a second, and moving stuff around, I thought I was still in edit mode.

    1. larryfreeman profile image78
larryfreemanposted 14 years agoin reply to this

      Hi Whitney,

The links in the learn widget should have worked.  I've fixed the bug and the update will go out later today.

If you have any suggestions for improving the experience with the custom home page, feel free to let me know.

Thanks very much for your feedback!  :-)

Whitney05posted 14 years agoin reply to this

I'm not really sure what could be said. I've been using it throughout the day trying to just test it out. It still looks like it would be in edit mode to me. I'm not sure... Just maybe some color or something. The color from the original homepage was pleasing to the eye. The customizable one is gray and white with links. The only color is the triangle in the hubpages logo and my picture. Just throwing that idea out there.

I love the idea of the customizable homepage, it's just bland. (but I guess it matches the airy look of the hubs and whatnot... I still feel the last layout change has left the look airy with a lot of space)

Is there a widget to show hubbers that you're a fan of who have recently published hubs? That was probably one of my favorite features of the other homepage.

        1. larryfreeman profile image78
larryfreemanposted 14 years agoin reply to this

          Thanks Whitney.

It sounds like you would like to see a choice of display styles for the custom home page.

I'll add this our list of potential features.

          Thanks for the additional details.

Is there a widget option to see which of out fans have recently created a hub, like what is on the original homepage?

larryfreemanposted 14 years agoin reply to this

              Hi Whitney,

If you mean the Hubtivity portion of the original homepage, there is a Hubtivity widget that you can add.

It has the same functionality when you first you add it (it is the same as your hubtivity) but then you can customize it if you wish.

I have a question, how do I edit my favorite topics on profile page to show a catagory?

    1. larryfreeman profile image78
larryfreemanposted 14 years agoin reply to this

      Hi Jiberish,

To do this, you will need to first switch to the custom home page.  This is done through changing the selection found on your home page (if you haven't already done it).

If you have a Hubs widget available, then when the mouse moves over the widget, an edit button will appear on the bottom.

If you don't have a Hubs widget (which means that you don't have a Category Fan list), then you go to the "add a widget" button and you will see a "Hubs (by Category)" widget.

Once you click the edit button, you will see a choice for categories.  Select the category that you want and then hit save for the setting to take effect.

      I hope that helps.
