? guess they're tweaking in the Web"meister" shop  The elves are at work before the end of the holidays. We're no longer FANatics  of each others writings but Followers like a cult of Publishing Wizards.

I didn't really like the idea of "fans" as a term, but "followers" is even scarier, particularly given the prevailing topics in the forums. What's wrong with something more accurate, like "readers" for example?

I agree followers as a term is just creepy. Who decided to change it and why didn't they ask the writers what we thought about it.

Instead of fans or followers, how about .
"people who never read your hubs and don't really give a toss what you write about, but only joined your fan club in the hope that you would join theirs and that they would then get a higher hubber score" . . .or is that a bit too long do you think?

Well I was not aware of it. In fact I though they really read my hubs and they are my fan because they liked it. Going by your conclusion they should be just called as "visitors". They don't deserve a fancy word. As long as you have been a hub member, did you join any fan clubs

what about all of those who had perfected their super-fanning technique?  will they now be known as having a super-followering technique?

what about the forum trolls?  will they still be allowed to follow others around?  or will they have their own sub-category, like maybe bottom-followers?

    similar to bottom-feeders.

Then scroll to the very end of all of your fans (sorry "followers")

    Synonyms for 'fan' are:

    Devotee
    Follower
    Admirer
    Enthusiast
    Supporter
    Buff
    Addict
    Fanatic
    Groupie
    Etc

Give the hubteam a break. Many of us don't like the eff word. Now they've come up with an alternative. I think follower is the best of a bad bunch.

    Groupie anyone? wink

Justine I've no idea. Maybe they just thought it time for a change or because a they'll be aware that a good few don't like the word 'fan'. *shrugs*

I'm not that interested in the change, otherwise I'd email and ask. But whatever, there'll be a reason, no doubt.

I'd be a lot more interested if the hubteam suddenly said "Happy Christmas to all our little scribblers - for the festive week, we're giving you a 40% affiliate boost" big_smile

      3. Haunty profile image74
Hauntyposted 15 years agoin reply to this

I think the words are a bit taken out of context here. Fans, followers, whatever they are called, are the people who follow our writing - not us. Personally, I don't like fan so much because for me it means that I identify with the person, while actually it is more likely that all I want is follow their hubs.

        1. Sue Adams profile image68
Sue Adamsposted 15 years agoin reply to this

Yes, but aren't hubs also a reflection of the authors' personality? Like I would never follow someone who concentrates exclusively on selling products as I am not interested in reading catalogues. It's like sitting at the kitchen table over a coffee and picking up a magazine that someone left behind because there is nothing else to read. Or even worse, reading the back of a cornflakes packet.
So followers is OK but I agree with Rayalternately that "readers" would be better.

Sue, I like what you said about the cornflake packet.  I would never follow that kind of writer, but I might be a fan, if I admire how they use this medium to espouse a cause or make money.  I would learn from them.  But I don't think I'd follow them.
