Sticking to one's budget requires two things-: 1. Committed decision and, 2. Self discipline. It is difficult to achieve anything of significance without these two qualities. Remember that you are dealing with a habit of reckless spending and you now have to replace it with a culture of responsible spending. Don't despair if you fall off the wagon. The most important thing is to get back on. You will be dealing with paradigms that took years to develop. It will be an injustice to try and change them over night. Give yourself some time, NOT TOO LONG.

I agree with Mpho Mokobi, committed decision and self discipline are musts if we are going to stick to a budget. In a society of indulgence and instant gratification, the concepts of waiting, patience, and frugality are almost extinct! My husband and I are actively working on getting out of debt and we are learning that it really is true that sticking to a budget, getting out of debt, really all things financially responsible, is almost entirely BEHAVIOR!! Whether we  have $10 or $10,000 to spend or save, if we don't monitor our behavior, all the know-how and financial guru-ness means nothing! I've also found its helpful to add a little "treat" money every few months, nothing elaborate, just enough to congratulate yourself on a job well done thus far...

You can stick to your budget by avoiding buying anything at all that is unnecessary.  In times of strictness, I do without.  I think of all the clutter and things that I already have at home.  But if a family member needs help or there's an emergency, then don't be foolish.  Go ahead and spend.  If you have a credit card, it's not the end of the world to carry a balance at reasonable interest rates.  It's better to hold some money in savings, than to pay off the credit card.  So never do anything unnecessary when you've got your back to the wall because nothing is coming in to pay the bills.  But even at such dire times, act immediately to resolve a crisis emergency and run up the credit card.
