Some of my favorite smells are:
Fresh brewed cinnamon coffee with Hazlenut creamer. I add more cinnamon on occasion. I use that mix at work and it is kinda' an aroma therapy for me. It helps maintaining a sense of calmness with the day to day normal stresses.
Oddly, gasoline is one. I think that goes back to the hey-day time period of Hot Rods, NHRA Racing as a participant, within its complex of manufacturing entrepreneurs, and today a spectator, and finally it just revs me up.
I like the smell of a hot-out-the-oven pizza with a secret tomato sauce. It can be vegetarian, or meat lovers, or Hawaiian, or shrimp, or just a great sweet New York Style cheese pizza too.
I like the smell of a baby in her/him mom's/dad's arms just after a bath. The twinkle in the eyes and cute smile help too.
I like the smell of morning. I sleep in a chair next to a window usually. My bed is below a bunch of power wires so the theory is EMF signals disturb my sleep. I dun'no. However, I sleep with the window open. I go to work at noon. So, I let the smell of dawn awaken me naturally. Yup, morning smells wonderful . . .

I took a cutting home from Spain in the spring, and it is now 4 feet high and has just finished flowering - indoors because it is a bit too cold for it outside here, except in summer.

I love herbs, lavender, rosemary, thyme, mint, lemon grass etc. They all small so earthy and natural but are unique in the most pleasant of ways.
Even though I do not drink coffee, and never have, I love the smell of a newly opened container of ground coffee.

The list could go on! Scents are one of the strongest memory recallers, and this is why yuzu is on my list. It is one of the signature scents of a mountain spa in Santa Fe, where I used to live. I loved it there!
A camp fire
Cooking onions
Honeysuckle
Pumpkin lattes
AND gasoline. Yes, I went there. And no I don't huff the stuff for effect. I just really love the occasional whiff at the gas station.
Gasoline/petrol/diesel - all does it for me too! lol I was destined to become a taxi driver, and get to fill up with diesel every night.
No-one else just adore the smell of tarmac? Maybe there is another name for it in the States? That black stuff they re-surface roads with? Mix of tar and stone chips?
And I love the smell of the sea. That salty tang that comes in with the breeze as you stand on the shore with the wind in your hair. I missed that in Spain, even though the sea was never more that 5 miles or so away (as the crow flies).
And talking of Spain, walking through the 'campo' when the almond trees are in flower is Heavenly.
Or just walking by bars and smelling that heady mix of coffee and beer.
Oh I get the tarmac thing, Izzy. Over the summer we had our street re-tarred (is that a word?) and I was the only one in the neighborhood who was happy. Everyone else had their windows seal up tightly... not me.
We must have similar "smell buds" because I also love the smell of the sea. Just left the Oregon coast and was loving how my clothes still smell.
I forgot
honeysuckle
pumpkin lattes
plumeria
patchouli
sauteed garlic and onions
olive oil and herbs for dipping bread
chicken grilling outside
@Izzy, I'm not feeling the love for the smell of tarmac.. I do love the smell of the salty sea air, it's like therapy for me. Maybe why I live in Florida.
I also love the smell of a hot summer night in Florida with a slight breeze.
I also like the smell of Murphys Oil Soap. It's what I use to clean my floors, furniture and counters.
How can I forget orange blossoms.
Hope you folks in Florida have the hatches well battened in view of the impending storm.
Full moon tomorrow = highest tides in the next week.
That plus Sandy looks a bit dangerous. Stay safe!
Even if you don't like the smell of tarmac!
Thanks Izzy, the storms often come our way, but this one is heading towards DC, New Jersey, the Northeast. I think the east coast of Florida may have felt some effects, but we didn't over here on the Gulf coast. My thoughts are also with the people who may be affected. We went through one a few months ago, and it was not fun. My street and yard turned into a lake.
I hope those in mandatory evacuation zones take the necessary precautions and leave. Situations can get very serious quickly.
Not nice
I saw on the news something about Venice being flooded?
They showed pavement cafes with people sitting in about 6 inches of water. Well, one person. Guess the rest made a fast exit.
I don't know, it's very possible. It's further south.
Storm surge looks very threatening with Sandy.
