Does this category really exist on HP?

I was hopping some Hubs when I came arcoss a Hub which was nothing more than a bunch of pictures of women.  Just before I gave it a low rating I noticed there is actually a category for this kind of material on HP, I thought this wasn't allowed.  Can someone give me some advice on this subject.

Kind of wondering why "Nostalgic Bicycle Ride Through Livermore Wine Country" was lumped in there. Was someone wearing a bikini on a bike?

...and why is its thumbnail pic a turkey?? Was the TURKEY wearing a bikini while riding a bike??

But seriously, I was unaware that there was such a Hub category. Geez, here all this time I've been tryin' to write real, whatchacallit, lit-ra-cher .. I had no idea that all I needed to do to make real big money was to post lots of Hubs with titles like "Hot (Random Bollywood Actress' Name Goes Here) Photos and Wallpapers." Dang!!

No surprises here, it's why Hollywood blockbusters made hundreds of millions of dollars and independent films ("literature"), make next to nothing. Give the masses what they want, and you'll be better off financially.

Strangely enough this does exist and stranger still is that is gets lost of views. Ever wondered what Google thinks of sites that have this content?

      Hi SpaceShanty,

That Topic is a throwback from when HubPages had very few content restrictions. We don't encourage that kind of content any more, but there are still enough Hubs around to warrant a separate Topic.

It seems strange that you've left any of these Hubs published, considering many of them have watermarked or  pixelated images.

It does seem strange that many of these Hubs have just a single paragraph, loads of semi pornographic watermarked/unattributed or obviously stolen photos are allowed to remain published whilst other Hubs which are of far higher quality fail the quality assessment process.

Stealing images is both illegal and unethical and it frustrates us too. We do our best to educate Hubbers and encourage and promote Hubs with legally-used, properly-cited images, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the author to use media correctly and legally.

We have Unfeatured thousands of Hubs in that category, and new Hubs are subjected to a higher bar to become Featured, but we also have to find a balance between restricting content and allowing authors more freedom (insofar as our advertisers will allow). That said, please do report any Hubs that violate our TOS or contain nudity. It's a big help.

That is atrocious! I had to look at every Hub a few times each in that category to make sure all of them were that horrible. I really need to Hub hop more often, because I am missing out.

The hubs are categorized in entertainment and as such might be making the hubs okay  and not censored.

Hah so HP had to resort to porn to get people on board.  It's sad, but it's not so surprising, considering porn sites make up a large portion of the web.

Surely having a subcategory that specific counts as "encouraging" it? -- maybe it is time it was retired?

Because otherwise it contributes to the mixed messages new hubbers sometimes feel that they are getting.

We decided in the past that keeping a separate Topic around is a better solution than lumping those Hubs in with other entertainment Topics, since many Hubbers will not want their work displayed alongside that type of content.

    3. frantisek78 profile image79
frantisek78posted 10 years agoin reply to this

Why would you want to retire this kind of category? So what if there are people who like looking at these pictures? Let's not try to force prude puritan morals on what can and cannot be put onto HubPages if this kind of category already exists. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to look at it, right? No point in trying to keep this site purely "literary" (whatever that means), as very very few hubs fit that category.

      1. psycheskinner profile image83
psycheskinnerposted 10 years agoin reply to this

As I explicitly stated, twice, because people are dumping collections of stolen pictures in there.  And legit hubs have other categories they can use.

I am an atheist free-love throwback and erotica author, so any assumption you are making are making in you own head not in my life.

You may bot have picked up on my real reason because you lift copyright photos for you own hubs (not an assumption, i checked).

Thank you for checking, but you must have not checked very well because all of the pictures I use have their sources noted underneath them.

Seeing as there are many pictures whose sources are not cited on HubPages, it is strange to be so upset about the pics being so in this particular category, hence my comments above. Also, in your comment just below here you specifically mention deleting all the illegally copied "sexy" pictures. Why not all illegally copied pictures then?

There have in the past been repeated requests for this category AND the garbage it contains to be DELETED.

HP refuses to do so. Presumably, this section earns good money, so the injunctions on quality, length, passion and all that stuff are quietly ignored and the hubs are kept safely away from the MTurk knives.

      1. frantisek78 profile image79
frantisek78posted 10 years agoin reply to this

Why should they do so? If it bothers people that much, they don't have to look at it.

    6. psycheskinner profile image83

Deleting all hubs fully of illegally copied "sexy" pictures would also seem to be a valid option.  I can't see many hubs correctly placed in that category that is not violating copyright.

The remaining few showing legal, clothed pictures would look just fine in other categories like entertainment/actors.

Er.  It is sort of a joke one.  I haven't really put naked lady pics up on HP - artistic impressions that's all.  Tastefully done.  I mean, you wouldn't want your mother to see it - although it depends on what she's like.  Anyway, hope that has cleared things up.

I find it very unfair that hubs questionable in morals have almost been wiped out ,  and still appear , when something that is of good and healthy or sometimes of spiritual content is judged and wiped out very quickly,  Hubs become the Art of the judges. At  Hp , because you pick and choose what you like ,and that is when you create your own big picture!  Some one likes  the hubs that are moraly questionable , so they stay, The truth is hub pages do not belong to the Hubbers  but the judges.

I think you're confusing ppl's love/hate relationship with porn and the fact that this site has made an genuine effort to be a writing site and not a site for pictures. As you can imagine pictures, though sometimes very pretty; alone, can dumb down an effort. I don't know if I've properly addressed your concerns, but I saw that you'd made your claim a few times and I thought maybe you needed a direct explanation? I hope this was in some way helpful.

Thank you for the explanation, but I do understand. There are plenty of hubs that have just pictures with just a few words underneath, be it for travel destinations, electronics, or any number of products. I don't see a problem with those and have not seen a big outcry against those. In this case people seem to be upset with the content (girls scantily dressed), and not the fact that the whole hub is basically nothing but pics with some captions.

Rather you respect it or not the law of right wrong still exist  even though many in this world try to overlook it and say they do not have to answer for thier discisions in this life. The forbidden fruit ,Your eyes are power they motivate you to action. That is why the media uses many pictures..

I don’t think this is about morality. It is about even handedness to most who object to these types of hubs. Hubpages is giving mixed messages. On the one hand, they flag certain words as inappropriate but then, on the other hand, these bikini hubs seem to be marketing toward a market we thought was frowned upon by HubPages.

Personally, I don’t find the human body objectionable in any way. If we are talking about Eve in the garden, then we must acknowledge that Eve was naked in the garden. It was sin that clothed her.

Now, I don’t wish to remove the hubs because I see nothing objectionable about pictures of girls in the same way that they look when I am on a public beach. We can’t rule over the world with our personal doctrines or what a preacher says is inappropriate.

The objection I’ve read most is that HubPages is not being evenhanded with policy. My belief is that there is a lot of traffic on those hubs and it wouldn’t be financially prudent to end those hubs. So, there isn’t anything anyone can say that is more powerful than a money source. The men and women who choose to have hubs like that are apparently within HubPages’ guidelines and therefore, it is not any of our business since HubPages is in charge here.

      Relax, everyone.

HP have this category because they started out with it. They already banned the worst of it!

You are asked to use properly attributed photos, but it is not a requirement.

You might get a HOTD or win any contests if you use anything other, but you might earn a Hell of a lot of money if your hub garners traffic.

I think we should have a contest. Let's see who can can publish the most daring Indian Auntie hub without losing ads from HP or elsewhere.

I tried going the writing route, but HP has filtering software already in place. So let's stick to photos, we just need to write a couple of nice lines between them.

Joking asides, I am sick to death of seeing this type of hub.
Most of the images are copyright, and say so on the image.
That should be reason enough to unpublish them.

If that also means the unpublishing of non-properly attributed images on my own hubs, then so be it.

You are either above board, or below it.

    14. Marcy Goodfleisch profile image84

I believe these hubs get enough traffic (from people looking for that junk) that HP keeps them on the site. However, my question would be whether there's a negative trade-off in terms of Google rankings for those of us who publish legitimate content?  No matter how the urls are tweaked, I suspect Google still lumps us all together in some manner, and the Indian Auntie types of hubs hurt this site in the long run.

Maybe someone can clarify that term a bit - all I know is that when I first joined the site, I started reading forum posts using the 'Auntie' term for many (most?) of the hubs of that nature. They've been here for years, and I think the  Auntie term is a cultural artifact  (from India?).  There were some really obscene hubs at one time - one writer got so frustrated she posted a link to one that had an unprintable title. The content didn't reflect exactly what the title suggested, but it should never (ever) have been on this site.

The site has done a great job of closing the doors to offensive or sub-quality content, but the lingering hubs are another matter.  I do know those hubs have brought in money.  But at what point does that lead to a sellout of quality?

I'm no prude, but I am a stickler for principle and even-handedness.

If you have a rule, then it needs to apply across the board.

Ergo, if these kinds of hubs are allowed, then neither should we be censored for using anatomically-correct language in a hub about medical issues.

We are always told when making complaints about the filters on HP that "Google is the boss."  Well, Google apparently has a double-standard of its own, if these hubs are allowed, and do not cause HP to be devalued in the "eyes" of the Google-bots.

I simply don't get it.  Educational information about sexual matters is disallowed, but peep-show photos are not?  It is both unfair and ridiculous.
Somebody needs to sit down and have it out with "The Big G," if this is their doing.  Time to come out of the dark ages of tittering over anything to do with the body.

The other way to get rid of these posts, would be to clarify HP very specifically as a writing site, with photos to supplement an article or video, but not "articles" that are primarily photos. (That is, if HP even wants to: as some have suggested, it may actually be a very big money-maker for them, and they would simply rather not admit that publicly.)

I ‘ve been censored. I couldn’t believe you can’t even use the scientific terms associated with the female and male anatomy. BUT you can almost show it and be ok. SMH

Was your medical hub unpublished or were ads removed from it? Google does not want their ads on pages which have inappropriate (to them) content. HP will usually just remove the ads, not censor the material.

I am no fan of the Indian Auntie hubs, but the several I just checked had no advertising. Do any of them have ads? I checked about ten and none of them did. It would be smart to strip (ha ha) this whole category of ads. But then, if these hubs have illegally copied photos and are not earning anyone any ad revenue, why doesn't HP just remove them? That negates the argument for keeping them here for the ad revenue.

My main concern is Google downgrading the site because of this junk.

Actually, there is a whole category for Hubs that are primarily photos:
        http://hubpages.com/topics/entertainmen … videos/766
The 'Sexy Picture' Topic is in there, too, but there are others: Photo Galleries, Cute Pictures, and Celebrity Photos.

I have a few Hubs in there that do very well.

Thanks for pointing this out! Notice how no one has really complained since you posted this?  smile

There is nothing wrong with having hubs that are mostly photos. All news sites have photos galleries as well, so I still don't know what the big outcry was on this forum...

Ads pay just as much per visitor for soft porn as it does for analysis of Chaucer or in depth study of Romantic Period Composers.

Sadly, soft porn probably does a lot better in traffic than anything worthwhile.

It might be a lesson for us all. Dumbing down for traffic’s sake might be the answer to becoming the next Internet made millionaire. Maybe I’ll make a new account…

“SHESGOTIT” and then attempt to grab traffic that wishes to learn to write erotic fiction and send to another new account, “WRITEHAWT” and cover all my bases.

I’ve been discovering there are many hub writers on here that are in a lot of niches in order to promote their offsite money projects. I think this category is probably full of anonymous hubbers.

tongue I had no idea this was here. Very strange. SMH

Just to add an example would a video game be a game without a picture,? And most display violence ,and other things ,crime today in a percent is blamed on video games.

True we can not do anything about Hp policies , but the point here is that something is wrong! It is appears normal when it is not, For the love of money there is no boundaries. The point of the story in the garden is God himself set boundaries for us ,again we can allow others to say it is ok when it is not .it is the same issues Satan raised in the garden ,have we allowed society to tell us it's ok to look and read in appropriate things just because they appear? Yes we have beaches of nude people. But does that mean God approves just because its there, no ! Satan is there and God does not approve of him and people that do what he likes. Simple badness is all around even through the pages. We have an obligation not only to be clean physically but also morally in God's presence. For we are to be Christ like, nowhere in the life of Jesus will you find such conduct . And yes all  people will be judge . Why let satan help you loose your life forever. In regards to me I abstain from what is harmful to the mind and body , the spiritual part is more important then the physical man. Many are loosing the battle ,when I see danger we let others know because God is love. And we are to love our neighbors as ourself . My post is how I show love.
