    Wow...

I come back from the weekend and I'm delighted to see how popular this thread has become!  I went through each individual page and friended as many of you that I could find.

It helps tremendously if you copy-and-paste a link to your profiles rather than say what you're user name is or what it typically is on websites.  Misha, thanks for posting a huge list of links to your profiles, that made things very easy!

And as far as the question of "why" should we network on these other sites, here's my response-

    * It helps drive traffic to your hub
    * Traffic generally brings revenue to your pockets
    * Social status is increased on these other websites based on how many friends/fans you have and how active you are on these sites

Think of the popularity factor in terms of a typical middle school experience.  More friends = more respect = more weight to what you say = more people follow you, etc.  These sites are similar.

So the benefits, as I see them, are (at least) two-fold:

    1. When we all "friend" one another, "subscribe" to one another, "follow" one another, etc. we can help to vote up/digg/bookmark/thumbs up/etc one another's submitted articles, videos, HUBS, websites on safe driving, or even blogs on international luxury property!

    2. When "outsiders" see our profiles on these websites, we are seen as carrying more "weight" and they are (supposedly) more likely to view/vote positively on the materials we put in front of them.  In other words, we help to drive group-think!

Anyway, that's my abbreviated version for those wondering.

Keep the good links coming and I'll continue to friend!

I have to say that I submitted a video to propeller.com and with under ten "votes" the video made it to the 1st page of google for the term "amazing cats" (which I'd say is a preppy competitive keyword).  The video itself only had around 100 views...

All these benefits are very true, but let's not forget that google picks up patterns and unless you add real value to the socials, you will get banned. Whenever I vote up a story for someone in particular (especially friends), I peruse the site and vote on others who are not a part of my circle, adding comments that have real meaning, this can be time consuming to say the least, that's why I spend my efforts on a few good socials and not a sleuth of them, because I could not otherwise, possibly give quality ratings to everyone on every social and bookmarking site.  Seems everyone is adding everyone and going crazy all of a sudden, I'm not convinced it's such a great idea. That's just my opinion of course, it may work perfectly for others.

And that's a valid point- we all need to be responsible users (and not ABusers) on these sites.  And yes, search engines (and these websites) can tell when we're spamming, so it's always a good rule of thumb to be active on the websites that we've listed here...

    2. Dorsi profile image72

I think everyone that is participating is excited and going "crazy" because this is such an exciting thing- to be able to use the power of a group- the power of the interent and the power of networking- which when combined IS VERY POWERFUL.
This thread is a great example of networking, and supporting one another.
And yes you are right about contributing other things to the sites we join- read others articles, join forums, post other news worthy articles.
Like I said in my hub about networking, pick a few that really gel with you and stick with it- we can't possibly join and pariticpate in everything (but we can join them and see which ones work best for us)
      Happy hubbing and networking everyone!
(OH and BTW- thank you Wedding Consultant for starting this thread and thanks MISHA for the other thread about Blogatiser that got our wheels turning!!!!)

Chantel, I think I am with WC on this. This thread is not about voting up one another's posts (which I agree to you absolutely is a very tricky business and should be approached with a great care). This thread is about friending/subscribing/favoriting one another, which increases our weight on social networks and does not have any drawbacks. smile

I signed up to StumbleUpon a couple of months ago, but signed in for the first time today to try and figure it out.  It has my old website on it, and I cannot figure out how or where to change it.  Can it be changed?  Or should I close the account and rejoin?

Any tips/hints?

Shirley, like a lot of these sites, Stumbleupon officially prohibits self-promotion - although I must say, I had to dig a bit to find their terms and conditions at all!

However, in practice, most people seem to get away with stumbling a few of their own Hubs, provided they're only a small percentage of the total Stumbled.

    1. WeddingConsultant profile image63
WeddingConsultantposted 17 years agoin reply to this

Participation is key.  I'll confess I've "stumbled" a link or two to websites of mine, BUT, I participate frequently at stumbleupon and that is important.  If all we're doing is submitting our own stuff and voting for it, then it IS spammy and that's not what I'm advocating.

Maybe eventually we could establish some sort of system where we submit the hubs that OTHER hubbers wrote and have that reciprocated back?  Just a thought.  But for now, please don't just submit your own stuff- take it seriously and vote up/digg/submit other material...i.e. participate.  The more you participate, the better your reputation will be which will help you when you DO get around to submitting a hub/article!

FYI- I went through and friended people on all the sites again...but there are still many people I'm the "fan" of because they haven't "fanned" me back, like on stumbleupon and twitter, for example.

Whew--just read this entire thread and can see that I am woefully "socially challenged" I better get bizeeeeee.

In the meantime, I am "pinkpackrat" on Digg,Stumbleupon,Blogatiser and Top Hubs. BTW does anyone ever visit Top Hubs?  Many of you are already my friends on these sites--but if not, find me next time you're there and friend me and I'll friend you back.

I have a Facebook page--in fact I have two--but never use the site. Maybe I should. The most used facebook page is under the name of "Stone Maiden" and the avatar is the same as on the other sites.

I don't know how you all do it. I have a hard enough time finding time to write hubs and participate a bit in the bookmarking sites I do belong to.  Hat's off--especially to you, Misha smile

I joined/used SOCIALPOSTER.com to send a story out to various sites at once.

I learned a whole lot from all of you on this thread.

I never could figure out how Misha got so many fans without writing hubs. Now I know.

Maybe this is why I never let my fan total catch up to my hub total?   Like a race.

This is a good idea if - as mentioned by others - it's done the right way. I also think it is a good idea to start sharing others hubs or blogs that you see. I do admit I have to get more active in other communities. I've signed up for a few but don't have the time to participate in all. Right now HubPages is my home and I will and am slowly expanding that. It really takes more time than I thought!

So, I will be coming back and just friending (or whatever) each person I see. Thanks all for sharing. Also, not sure if you know there's a new social blogmarking site in beta...

For those who are interested, here's a hub I created about making money using revver video.

That might help those of you who didn't know much about revver video.  Like I said before, putting revver video onto your hub is a WIN-WIN situation.  First, you win because your hub's rank and authority are increased with a (good, relevant) video or two in it.  Because it's got a higher rank, you'll get more traffic which should give you more ad income from your hub.

Second, you win because you earn money on revver's website because people will be viewing your video and hopefully clicking on the ad there as well!  You'll get income from both Hubpages (from the hub) and revver (from the video).

I don't really remember now - I dropped onlywire from my tools more than half a year ago. I remember after getting some problems with it I made a test that showed it reliably posts to THREE sites out of dozen plus advertised...

  31. Dorsi profile image72
    Dorsiposted 17 years ago

Yes I went to OnlyWire and signed up for the bookmarking sites they suggested- but when signing up for the sites I saw some negative feeback about OnlyWire- that if you subscribed to it and they found out they would drop your account, because alot of spammers are using it- so I'm looking at a different utility- I'm not going to use OnlyWire. I don't need to start out getting banned from sites!

  32. embitca profile image82

    1. WeddingConsultant profile image63
WeddingConsultantposted 17 years agoin reply to this

Yes, I've used social marker in the past.  I'm sure it's similar.

But I'll stress that I've "lightly" used it as I don't want to get banned myself.  And I also try to get on all the websites individually and bookmark things I'd like to save for myself, not just for business.  If all you do is go in and post links back to your site (or sites), you will get flagged eventually, so I try to do as much natural bookmarking and participation on there.

You want to 'send a shout' to the person.

When you log in, go to your profile. Then open the link to your friends and choose the one you want to send a shout to. At the top right of the next screen is a link to "send shout". when you click that it directs you down to small box to type your message and enter the digg url link. When your done below the box it a link to send the request..... hit "shout it"
      your all done.
