   Although I am here for a love of writing, however it would be nice to be able to earn some money for my passion also.  Has anyone here actually seen decent earnings?

      Hi Dustin, welcome to HubPages. Yes, you can earn but it depends on your goals. It takes some time before you can actually see good earnings. Most of hubbers don't see significant earnings until after a couple years. However, this is probably not the best time to ask this question, as many hubbers/squids are going through a difficult transition with earnings. Check out the other forums about current issues. Setting realistic goals, having a plan, having a back up plan, and a lot of patience will increase probability of good earnings at HP or any other writing site.

      It depends what you regard as "decent".  You can expect to earn between $2 to $5 per thousand views, so clearly you have to get thousands of visitors to make any reasonable figure.
      
      That is possible, if you write about subjects which people are actively searching for online. You need to write Hubs which answer a question, help solve a problem, or help people make progress with a hobby or project - and you need to identify "angles" which aren't already well represented on other webpages. 
      
      Once upon a time it was possible to earn $1000 to $2000 a month with a portfolio of good articles like that.  However very few people do that now because the online world is now SO competitive.   Look at the earnings poll in this Hub to get a more realistic picture of what people actually earn:

      It also takes time to reach a good earning level.   The people who are earning well have been here several years and their Hubs aren't just good quality, they are long-established.   Personally, I wouldn't recommend anyone join Hubpages now with the intention of doing the same - because most  revenue-sharing sites have closed down in the last year or so, and therefore I think it's foolish to assume HubPages is going to be around forever.   The fact that they've recently invested in the business is a good sign but it shouldn't make us complacent.

         I agree that you shouldn't "put all your eggs in one basket". I think the best approach is to use a tool for what it is meant for.
         
         HubPages is fantastic for being easy to create in and having an excellent community. The latter is important because the community can become a significant source of traffic / inspiration.
         
         That being said, if you need a source that you have complete control over, building your own website may be a better option.

         I also heard that it was a bad idea to start writing for this site over 2 years ago, in the wake of the 2011 Panda "crash". Despite that, I have had plenty of traffic.

   Dustin, I'd like to second what Jan said (although I've only been here for a couple of months now).  I'd add:  set your goals as to improve incrementally on your previous month's earnings, and don't really worry about whether it's big bucks.  If you can improve a little bit each month and move forward rather than backward, you're going to be in great shape.  Hope this helps!

      Best avenue?  Like, do I earn more from Adsense, Amazon, or eBay?  Or something else?
      
      Adsense kicks the crap out of everything else here for me, although if a high dollar item sells via Amazon, that could change quickly. I kind of doubt it will, though.

      The HP Ad Program is the best. I get very little from Amazon ads, virtually nothing from eBay ads.

         I can second that.  HP Ad Program, including Amazon which gives you 8% with HP instead of only 4% with own website. Been here 5 years and reach 3 figs monthly payout. Took 2 years to start earning.

         I agree with Jan. There a few that say they earn more from Adsense, but almost everyone will say Hubpage ads pay better for them and you still earn from Adsense when you have that.

    You can earn but don't expect a heap of dollars within a week, month, year or even two! I'm not aware of any hubbers who have become overnight millionaires! But who in their right mind would want to publicise that fact?
    If you're looking for quicker money then try and write good, trendy, high quality, eye catching hubs that are cutting edge on happening now topics like big sports events, festivals, new technology etc etc. Expect higher traffic for a short length of time if you get decent Google page exposure.
    Evergreen hubs last longer and tend to bring in a steady amount of traffic over many months, even years.
    Write high quality hubs on a niche topic, an area of life in which you have expertise and, according to all wisdom, you should get some devoted followers.
    Up to now I've enjoyed the simple pleasures of just getting work out there. The money I've earned - not that much I have to say - is a bonus.

    Commitment to high quality original content works, and I get decent money from the HP Earnings program.
    
    The biggest mistake I see people make, including me, is following the advice that writing about your passions will make you successful. Well, not if your passion is Australian rules football or the social life of American toad, and not likely if your passion is something that's already so thoroughly covered you have nothing new to add. Writing about readers' passions where you can answer questions or intrigue them with new details is what works. I believe more content creators have been mislead by that advice more than any other.

       I second this. I've been around the Internet for a long time and write about what people what to know and what I can write about competently. Over the years, I've found a few legal topics that people are consistently seeking out (and almost always get a lot of traffic), so I write about them ad nauseum, from every angle, even though they're not my passions. When I get bored with those, I write about things that I've seen discussions about recently, but only if they fall within my area of "expertise," which I define as a) having a graduate degree in it or b) having done it professionally for at least five years.

    SAQ:  You must have a Pay Pal Account to earn from the Hub Pages Earnings Programs.   You need a Google Adsense account and they require Pay Pal.

    Your pay out is encouraging.  I have never had Amazon come through.  Once it was pending for a week.  I think I need to write sales related topics.  BTW are you in Spain or Alabama?

       You don't have to copyright it. You copyright it simply by publishing it.  However, if you publish it online it will be stolen - copyright notices won't stop that, I'm afraid.

    The most I have ever earned a pay out  in 2 months. I have put a lot of work into HP though and from the looks of things currently, it might be while before I see  those kinds of figures again.

    1. Write like you talk. This 'voice' seems to work well with readers.
    2. Find a niche and flesh it out. Most of my articles were written while I was caring for my elderly mom. I have over 150 articles about senior citizen care. People hop from one article to the next.

    Great points!  What other sites are there?  Which would you all recommend.  On another topic, after years of wanting to write I finally am taking the first steps and have been accepted by the local newspaper to have a recurring column!!  I'm nervous, but excited.

       All the other big revenue-sharing sites have failed and closed down recently.   Smaller survivors are Seekyt, Wizzley, Zujava and Infobarrel.   None of them, in my experience, pays as well as HubPages.
       
       There are several other rev-sharing sites, all started by refugees from the big sites, which means they are only a year or so old.  I would recommend people avoid them, because I very much doubt they will be successful.   Google doesn't like rev-sharing sites and tolerates the remaining ones only because they contain such an enormous breadth of articles and have gained some authority with age.

    Dustin: I like Constant Content although the quality of the writing has to be better than that at most sites - there's an editor there who reviews every article and gives very good critique.
    
    If you can't revise and pass the editor on Constant Content, you can't publish. This site lets you offer your writing for different type of sales (you can sell an article just once or many times). You can also accept offers for lesser price, or decline them.
    
    I've had nice success over there while I was writing for the site. At the moment, I mostly sell residuals from my usage articles. Everything else has sold.
